Even though I got knocked out in Semis, I had a ton of fun building for the DUU tour, so I wanted to share my favorite teams and some that I wish I had the chance to use in a little team dump. Teams are roughly ordered by viability as I see it in the current meta, but most are a little wacky because I got excited by how many Pokemon were at least semi-viable. If you have any questions about spreads, send me a PM on Discord or PS! and I'll let you know, but I don't want to bother writing up every single set description for all of these teams.

EDIT: DAD1 stole my idea and did it first, but I agree with his remark that Stealth Rock is amazing in DUU.

Built this when we were discussing whether Darkrai should be ranked with VR Council. In order to justify using it over Protean Blizzard Greninja, went for a Darkinium set that allows Darkrai to OHKO every TR setter in the tier aside from Aromatisse. Mega Snow provides hail, and is pretty standard aside from the EVs. Bruxish checks Keldeo and Fire-types, which is fantastic for the first two, and both Taunt and its ability, Dazzling, which blocks priority moves aimed at its allies, come in handy quite often. Entei takes on the two biggest Megas, ZardX + Mega Scizor, and the latter was a HUGE issue before adding that. Tornadus gives the team another Keldeo check, provides Tailwind support, and benefits from any Intimidate users (Hitmontop, Krookodile, and Gyarados being the big ones). Last, Rhydon helps against Thundurus, setup/Trick Room, and Fire-types.

Azu + Zard X + Redirection is pretty difficult to mess up. Added Breloom for Spore, Thundurus for emergency button, and Krookodile for Stealth Rock + good coverage. Built this team super quick, but it doesn't need to be complicated to succeed. Electrium Thundurus is used to OHKO Togekiss, which is otherwise pretty annoying.

n10sit beat me on the ladder three times in a row with PsySpam so I gave up and built my own. Also tailored the team to CT his sample, since I knew I was facing Laga the next round and he liked n10sit's sample. Unfortunately, I brought this team the two games that Laga did not use that sample, but it still did okay. Gist of the team is Genesis Supernova Mew + Deoxys, then lots of support. Thunderbolt Mew helps against Gyarados which was otherwise super scary and has okay coverage. Fire Punch Deoxys is used to OHKO even bulky Scizor with the given Atk investment, Psycho Boost for raw power, Ice Beam for Krook and the ability to take out lots of Ice-weak Pokemon without lowering your SpA. I used Fire Blast Togekiss because I was still scared of Scizor but Tailwind is probably better overall. Yache Berry Krookodile helps the team's Porygon-Z matchup. Salazzle was a strange addition that I used for a super fast Fake Out that could take on Landorus, Mega Scizor, Abomasnow, Azumarill, and Togekiss all in one slot... ish. It's a little underwhelming but mostly does its job. Last, Mega Aero shores up the ZardX and TR matchups.

HP Fire + dual STABs Nihilego OHKOes all of Tier 1, and with a Focus Sash it's guaranteed to get the hit off. The rest is just cool mons that I wanted to try out, this was the first team I built after the tier shift. Magmar is a pretty cool redirector that matches up positively against Mega Scizor and Mega Abomasnow, which none of the others can do. Ghostium Hoopa is an awesome set that either gives you a ridiculous nuke, easily KOing every TR setter, or gives you Z-Destiny Bond to take out any physical attacker.

I knew I was likely to face Mew + Azu from Akaru Kokuyo, so I decided to try building around Cacturne. Water Absorb and fantastic Attack and Special Attack make it usable, but I'm not under any illusion that it's brilliant. Still, Darkinium Dark Pulse OHKOes every TR setter and Giga Drain / Sucker Punch as other attacking moves makes Cacturne no offensive slouch. Tyrantrum happened to match up well against most of the teams I had seen in prepping, and Head Smash is the only real attack you need, so I went for dual setup. Follow Me support from Togekiss, Roar support from Entei, and Fake Out support from Blastoise help against most team styles and let Cacturne get off as many strong hits as possible. Last, added a scarf Xurkitree for a decent catch-all and pivot. The team did pretty well in testing and won my game during the set against Akaru Kokuyo, so it's at least decent.

Yellow Paint only had two teams in the replays from the tour, both of which had Mega Scizor and Tangela. Heliodor had been talking about sun, and this seemed like the perfect time to try it out. Tsareena's a cool pivot and helps against most Fire resists. Hitmonlee provided me with a much more offensive version of Hitmontop, actually doing decent damage with Close Combat while still providing Fake Out and Knock Off support. Unburden + Payapa Berry lets it 1v1 Latios and Hoopa, it's a bit of an odd set but I knew it matched up well against Paint's teams. Clefable gave redirection for Houndoom, benefitted from sun due to Moonlight, and had Helping Hand support. Last, Rhydon gave Stealth Rock support for Houndoom to get more KOes with Heat Wave and was used to check Zard X.

I honestly should have left this team for later, since I had only used it once in testing, but it seemed to match up well against Laga's game 2 team and I liked the look of it. Dhelmise is super cool for OHKOing ZardX with Ghostium Phantom Force, Azu with Power Whip, and Togekiss with Heavy Slam. Nidoqueen also OKHOes ZardX and has Flamethrower to beat the things that Dhelmise can't hit. I went back and forth between Ice Beam Nidoqueen + Poison Jab Hariyama or Sludge Bomb Nidoqueen + Ice Punch Hariyama, but ended up deciding that an OHKO on Thundurus was more valuable. Hariyama is just super strong, and kept up the offensive pressure. Kasib Victini beats Ghostium Gengar and I hadn't used it for some reason so I threw that on, then Mega Slowbro seemed to be the best Mega for the team and took on Fire-types pretty well. Last I definitely wanted a Dark-type and Incineroar overlapped roles with Hariyama so I decided to try Honchkrow, with a bit of a weird set built to make it easier to get and keep Moxie boosts. I'm not sure I played the team as well as I could have in the below replay, but it's definitely a fun one.

Memoric showed me the light with Breloom + Gengar, I added Raichu to make it almost impossible to let the opp set up TR. Mega Blastoise benefitted a lot from this triple support, specifically the Water Spout set. Moltres was added for a Tailwind user that matched up well against Mega Scizor, Flyinium was theoretically to help it actually hit a Flying-type move and nab a KO. Comfey was the star of the team, using Triage Floral Healing to heal Mega Blastoise 50% at +3 priority and picking things off with priority Draining Kiss. This team is very much feast or famine - if Water Spout Blastoise has a good matchup or the opponent can't break Comfey for whatever reason, you're golden. The replay doesn't really show what the team is capable of, but it's the only time I used it during the tour.

Mudbray had just been really good for me in an LC game so I tried its adult counterpart, Mudsdale. It actually has decent Attack, and pairing it with Sludge Wave Dragalge made it easier to get Defense boosts. Needed a Trick Room setter and Musharna has Telepathy to fit with Sludge Wave Dragalge + Z-TR capabilities. Mega Abomasnow is just really good, Incineroar helps set TR and beat Mega Scizor (Wiki Berry is great guys), and Jellicent provides a secondary TR setter. Maranga is also fairly easy to activate with Sludge Wave heh. Hex Jellicent is nice to pair with Z-TR Musharna, three other Pokemon with moves that can induce status (Sludge Wave, Blizzard, Flare Blitz), and Scald on its own moveset. This is sort of a meme but it's not bad.

When building a Porygon-Z team, it either ends up being almost identical to Level 51/marilli's or super memey. This was the closest balance that I struck, it's nearly untested but kinda fun. Psych Up Entei + 3 things to Psych Up with (Porygon-Z, Azu, Mega Scizor). Breloom puts things to sleep for setup opportunities, Togekiss redirects.

Okay I went a bit insane here but hear me out. I saw Memoric's Necrozma set in Smogon Doubles Tour playoffs and wanted to make it work in DUU, so I threw together Electric Terrain Xurkitree + Electric Seed CM Autotomize Stored Power Necrozma. Togekiss redirects, Entei checks Scizor and TR, Rhydon checks Thund and ZardX, and Blastoise provides Fake Out support. The team's 2-0 in testing but it's really awkward to use and often dependent on Necrozma being able to set up and sweep.


Because I feel like being a tryhard and making this post EVEN LONGER, here's a batch of nominations based on my experience in 5 rounds of the tour:
Thundurus 1 -> 1.5
It's a good Pokemon, but it's not quite as metagame-defining as the other three in Tier 1. Ends up being not quite bulky enough or not quite strong enough a lot of the time. Maybe it's my personal affinity for Rhydon preventing it from being tough to handle, but I've never really struggled with Thundurus.

Mew 1.5 -> 1
65% winrate in the tour for very good reason. It's unpredictable, with some versatility within sets and with two viable options in full support or Genesis Supernova. Bulky, access to all the right moves, and Transform to not only further your own setup sweepers but also turn the tables on opposing setup users. Really tough to find notable flaws in this mon.

Victini 1.5 -> 2
Scarf can give setup opportunities to too many Pokemon and Trick Room is quite prepared for at the moment, so Victini just isn't great. It only has a 44% winrate in the tour, and doesn't seem up to the same standards as the other 1.5s

Mega Abomasnow 2 -> 1.5
Ice is a great Attacking type in this metagame, and Mega Abomasnow having both priority and a way to beat Azu is huge. In the same vein as Stealth Rock being really good, hail is awesome for chipping down foes into range. Obligatory did quite well in tour point (14-2 in first two rounds!)

Porygon-Z 2 -> 1.5
This Pokemon is so scary and so difficult to check. Lately in building, I always seem to struggle with ways to beat Porygon-Z + support. Also did brilliantly so far in the tour.

Clefairy 3 -> 4
Togekiss outclasses it in almost every way. Clefairy is far too passive and gives every dangerous setup sweeper a free turn to boost, and isn't really bulky enough to justify as a redirector when that's all it brings to a team.

Entei 3 -> 2
It's done very well in the tour, and I find myself going back to Entei pretty often for its significant role compression. Beating Mega Scizor, Mega Abomasnow, Mega Charizard X (kind of), and Trick Room, picking off weakened threats, spreading burns, all this and more! Entei also doesn't have a lot of competition, other Fire types are either considerably frailer, considerably slower, or far more limited in their movepool.

Incineroar 3 -> 2
Sort of on the border between the two imo, but putting in this nomination to give my fellow VR councilmembers a chance to decide. Fake Out + bulk + positive matchup against Mega Scizor all work in its favor, and Dark is a solid attacking type with Musharna, Latios, Victini, Gengar, and Bronzong running around. If Intimidate is released, this thing would be fantastic. EDIT: Just realized I was beaten to the punch by DAD1 last page

Rhyperior 3 -> 4
There aren't a ton of Rhyperior sets that you can use without Rhydon doing its job better. The slight increase in power and ability to hold an item rarely make up for a huge increase in bulk.

Salamence 3 -> 4
A grand total of 6 uses in the whole DUU tour and poor showings in those games. Salamence just doesn't have great matchups in the current meta, and is kind of difficult to fit onto most teams. Togekiss's popularity leaves it deadweight in many matchups.

Bruxish UR -> 4
Has a few decent matchups, Dazzling gives it a notable niche. Waterfall / Psychic Fangs / Taunt is helpful in most matchups and even though it's on the frail and weak side, it's still good on some teams.

Magmar UR -> 4
Notable niche in being a redirector with a great Mega Scizor matchup. Flame Body and Helping Hand are also pretty nice, and with an Eviolite it's passably bulky.

Nidoqueen UR -> 4
Sheer Force Life Orb Earth Power, Flamethrower, Ice Beam, Sludge Bomb, and Thunderbolt is a lot of hardhitting attacks with prime coverage. Also has access to the best move in the metagame, Stealth Rock. Better than Nidoking because it's bulkier and slower for use under TR.

Rhydon UR -> 3
Basically a better Rhyperior, should take Rhyperior's place in Tier 3.

Tornadus UR -> 4
Justified itemless Acro is pretty nice in a meta with fairly few Flying resistances and Tornadus can also provide Tailwind support.

So I took n10siT's and found out that I was liking it a lot, but two things were really bothering me about it: 1) the lack of a flying resist and 2) the TR matchup. In order to alleviate this. I settled on replacing lando with rhydon and entei with talonflame. The end result was something along the lines of a pretty standard gen 6 skydeo team, along with a defensive backbone of rhydon and mega scizor. Giving the z move on gengar was a bummer because i really liked the flexibility of the nuke or z destiny bond, but I think the final team is a bit more reliable overall given the improvement in the defensive backbone as well as having a really solid TR matchup now.

This is my psyspam team i've been using a lot in the DUU tournament. It got me a fair amount of w's and it's mainly meant to check azu setupstuffs by stuffing their Fake Out support and Azu with Psychic Terrain. It's kinda weak to Abomasnow z-TR but is ideally meant to use your taunters + Metagross to force out the Z-TR user, and hopefully with your taunts and Psychic Terrain you have easier time stopping the second TR setup. Overall I think Demantoid's spreads are probably better for the team, except for a few things
  • I don't think Azumarill needs to invest so heavily in Speed, you can probably put more into bulk. Also aren't you Aqua Jetting Landorus most of the time
  • Feint > HH on Hitmontop seems like a better idea, I think with most of the team attacking at +1 or +6 the HH isn't super necessary and Feint helps you pick off Focus Sash mons / lets you not waste the turns that you have Pory/Zard/Azu on the field for
Also Overheat on Mew is godly how did I not think of that whoa

We also now have Blaziken-Mega, Greninja-Ash, Sceptile-Mega as new drops. I've been playing around with some of the new drops and thought I'd post my opinions.

Muk-Alola - I've been using an AV set on this, and I like it so far. It feels very consistent versus a lot of common special attackers, like Shaymin-Sky, Sylveon, Thundurus, and Abomasnow-Mega, easily dodging 3hkos from all of them, and is annoyingly hard to switch into because of Poison Touch + potential Knock Offs. I've been using a spread of 208 HP / 164+ Attack / 136 Special Defense, Brave, which makes it slower than Sylveon, able to live 3 specs spread Hyper Voices (and 3 LO Thunderbolts from Thundurus, plus a bunch of other attacks in that area) and able to live 1 adamant V-create from Victini, and I've been using a set of Gunk Shot / Knock Off / Shadow Sneak / Fire Blast to 2hko Mega Scizor. That being said, even though it checks Cress, it can't beat it for your team without help, which sucks.

Terrakion - Cool mon we had before, Rock Slide is as annoying as ever, and it's still hard to switch into. The meta is kind of unkind to rock types right now but I think Terrakion differentiates itself well enough and often feels threatening in many matchups from my point of view, though it has a lot of issues vs teams with any kind of speed control.

Cresselia - Super awful to face. It's horribly difficult to kill and can use it's open fourth slot to do a lot of different things, including utility options like Icy Wind, Thunder Wave, and Trick Room, or lures like HP Fire or Moonblast. It's almost impossible to OHKO and sticks around forever, especially because some of it's most prominent checks are new or sort of out of meta, like Gigalith and Bisharp.

Torkoal - I really like this thing on sun teams, it's really consistent vs non-Gigalith trick room which is something sun badly needed, and it makes Cress extra broken. It's good on it's own in trick room as well, and generally just feels like a nice addition to the meta.

Pheromosa - Before these drops I wanted this back badly because I often felt like it was Deoxys-N that fit my teams better, but now that we have it I find myself frustrated by it's lack of initial power relative to Deoxys-N, almost entirely because Pheramosa's strong fighting stabs absolutely suck. Sometimes it just absolutely crushes teams but most of the time it just feels like Deoxys-N with a different moveset. Beast Boost often feels like a bonus versus the team it's going to crush since it's so easily forced out, as well.

Venusaur-Mega - I also like this, it feels like it checks (or at least doesn't lose to) a whole lot of things and has the power to threaten quite a bit, including new drops like Terrakion and Pheramosa and old mons like Thundurus, Keldeo, and Azumarill.

Latios: Tier 1.5 -> 2

cress is now wholly a better psychic and so is mew, this faces competition in the dragon slot from hydreigon, and doesnt seem to provide the necessary power and team support for tier 1.5

Musharna: Tier 1.5 -> 2

This one saddens me, as I love the Z-TR and Musharna play, but poor showings in the DUU championship along with the addition of Cress may mean that Z-TR is not as strong as it once seemed.

Clefable: Tier 3 -> Tier 4

similar reasoning behind tree's clefairy nom earlier, but this sees even less usage than clefairy and i would almost like to vote this UR if it weren't for its viability vs. azumarill and zard x.

Nihilego: Tier 3 -> Tier 4

This has seen such little usage lately, especially in the duu tour, and now faces even more rock type competition with gigalith, so i think this deserves to fall.

Talonflame: Tier 4 -> UR
Tangela: Tier 4 -> UR

Cresselia UR -> ?
  • N10sit - 1 lol

  • Lord death man - 1 I think. Really good and can carry a lot of different options in it’s 4th slot to beat typical checks.

  • Heliodor - U R clown if u vote anything other than one

  • Demantoid - 1, CM Cress is :sogood:

  • Talkingtree - This is a very clear 1. Even if the only set it could run was CM/TR/Psyshock/Moonlight, it would be a strong candidate for 1. I’ve seen plenty of games end in CM Cress wars, but it can also support with Helping Hand, coverage moves, weather setting, Icy Wind, and whatever else the team needs

Gigalith UR -> ?
  • N10sit - 3, super solid tr attacker/setup with curse, rockium stone edge hits hard, has heavy slam to own sylv and other fairies, gets wide guard

  • Lord death man - 3, it’s got the bulk to be threatening outside of trick room, it’s a threat in trick room and provides one of the best answers to torkoal for trick room teams. I could see it going higher.

  • Heliodor - 3, solid torkoal check also a decent cress check, not relying for TR to do something and has wg

  • Demantoid - 3 Could definitely see this rising in the future due to good bulk and strong attacks

  • Talkingtree - 3 works for now, Wide Guard / sand to decrease Cress’ healing / decently strong attacks gives it a few niches and it handles them all well. Struggles with a poor matchup against Azu/Scizor, but it’s a great check to ZardX and helps the rest of the team check Cress

Mega Gyarados UR -> ?
  • N10sit - 3, incredibly strong dragon dancer just outclassed by zard x, u would only use this if you cant support zard x well enough

  • Lord death man - 3, I don’t think it’s as good as regular gyara but it’s cool.

  • Heliodor - 4, its pretty hard to fit onto teams, outclassed by reg gyara and zardx, and has pretty bad coverage

  • Demantoid - 3 Dark typing is good and it has good bulk but doesn’t have recovery. Not an elite water

  • Talkingtree - 3, worse typing than its non-mega forme and zardx but it’s still quite powerful and demands respect in its battles

Muk-Alola UR -> ?
  • N10sit - 3, great cress check and can be super strong with curse

  • Lord death man - 3, curse Muk is actually a huge threat.

  • Heliodor - 3, very solid cress check pretty similiar to lax, shame it doesnt have recycle

  • Demantoid - 3 good typing and bulk let it check quite a few things

  • Talkingtree - 3 seems fine for now, haven’t seen or used it enough to know for sure though

Pheromosa UR -> ?
  • N10sit - 3, amazing coverage coupled with moxie + insane speed, checks so many things in one set, just extremely frail and can be beaten without losing any momentum just by clicking protect correctly

  • Lord death man - 4, for similar reasons to what n10sit said, but I think it’s horrible fighting moves + extreme vulnerability to priority make it more tier 4. It’s hard to fit on teams unless you already have the bases covered.

  • Heliodor - 4, similiar to deo-n

  • Demantoid - 3 It’s similar to deoxys-n but I like it better because of U-Turn.

  • Talkingtree - 4, belongs with Deo-N, since it has a similar set of stats and it has the advantage of a better typing for attacking but the disadvantage of no great STAB nuke like Deo’s Psycho Boost

Rotom-Wash UR -> ?
  • N10sit - 4, ldm sums it up v well

  • Lord death man - 4, it’s a solid check to Azumarill, Gyarados, Entei, Krook, Scizor but it’s absolutely horrible vs Porygon Z, Latios, Mew, Cress, etc. Losing to something on every team sucks when it’s also one of the best mons on that team.

  • Heliodor - 4, like what ldm said, also twave now has 90% miss chance

  • Demantoid - 4 Isn’t bulky enough to check things very well. Not an elite water

  • Talkingtree - 4 seems fine for now, I’d probably run Protect-less and pinch berry with Tbolt/Hydro/two of (Wisp/TWave/Volt Switch/Toxic) to avoid giving too many free turns to things that LDM listed but it’s in an awkward place in the meta

Sylveon UR -> ?
  • N10sit - 3, still a strong hyper voice attacker

  • Lord death man - 3, meta does suck for sylveon but not nearly as bad as it could be, and redirector-oriented set-up spam hates having to play around hyper voices.

  • Heliodor - 2, specs hv are hard to switch in to and there are very few good fairy resists

  • Demantoid - 2 Not too many good fairy resists to sylveon but it is a little slow

  • Talkingtree - 2 for me, Specs Hyper Voice is incredible if you have some steel killers on the team. If Mega Scizor weren’t around this would be a far easier 2 or maybe even 1.5, but it’s still a pretty solid mon

Terrakion UR -> ?
  • N10sit - 4, so much psychic scizor azu stuff like this just has rock slide fighting coverage isnt a huge deal

  • Lord death man - 3 at least, it’s good but it’s absolutely killed by trick room and all the great mons faster than it. I think it’ll take a while to earn a spot higher.

  • Heliodor - 4, meta arent friendly

  • Demantoid - 4 Checked by a lot of things

  • Talkingtree - this meta is somehow even less kind to Terrakion than DOU imo. My gut reaction says 4

Torkoal UR -> ?
  • N10sit - 3 with gigalith, is checked by gigalith but this is basically the slowest mon in the format with sun boosted eruptions, insane under tr but needs tr up

  • Lord death man - 3, it’s good and it provides support to some good mons on trick room, like Cress (broken).

  • Heliodor - 2, fire are great typing and this thing is crazy in tr, also f 9tales

  • Demantoid - 3 good trick room attacker and an actually decent sun setter

  • Talkingtree - 3, my more experienced co-voters said it well

Venusaur UR -> ?
  • N10sit - used this some more and think its 4, fast sleep powder is only ok and its kinda weak

  • Lord death man - I think 4, it should probably be a step below Torkoal unless Torkoal is 4, it’s just not that useful.

  • Heliodor - 4, found out its pretty lit, just too bad sleep powder can miss

  • Demantoid - 4

  • Talkingtree - UR for now. seems usable in 4 but we might need to do some serious trimming of the lower rankings soon

Mega Venusaur UR -> ?
  • N10sit - 2, insanely fat and great typing + thick fat make this a great check to a ton of stuff

  • Lord death man - 2, it’s good versus so much and it never dies.

  • Heliodor - 2, extrathicc but also setup bait

  • Demantoid - 2, some things can set up on it but it has good matchups against most stuff

  • Talkingtree - 3, thick fat is a godsend but it could really use another three moveslots to be able to run sleep powder/giga drain/sludge bomb/leech seed/knock off/hp fire/protect. Being somewhat setup bait for Cress, Scizor, and ZardX is bleh

We got some new drops (mega forms of Latios, Latias, Ampharos, Camerupt, Altaria, and Aggron I think are it) and I think Camerupt-Mega is worth ranking and the others aren't so I thought I'd nominate it.

Camerupt-Mega from UR to Tier 2.

I think Camerupt is very similar to Abomasnow but with several useful points in it's favor and should probably be ranked alongside Abomasnow in the current meta; while Abomasnow has an arguably better stab combination, priority, bulk, and hail chip damage, Camerupt has better defensive typing and more power thanks to a higher special attack stat + sheer force. Camerupt also outslows essentially everything relevant, tying with Torkoal, which is really nice for trick room. Camerupt benefits from two excellent additions to trick room we've gotten since the DUU tour, Torkoal and Gigalith, while Abomasnow clashes with both (and loses to both).

It also isn't as susceptible to random Overheat/Fire Blast lures (meant for Mzor) as Abomasnow, and hydro pump doesn't have nearly the distribution.

That being said, I don't think it's better than Abomasnow quite yet.

I was originally intending on not making any nominations until USUM come out, but I think the placement of a few mons is kind of off.

Pheromosa Tier 4 > Tier 3. This is by far the most threatening mon in Tier 4. Relative to Deoxys, it's coverage is just that much better and I vastly underestimated how good it is or would be when we initially ranked it.

Serperior Tier 3 > Tier 4. This was placed in tier 3 before we had a tier 4 and then stayed there despite the meta getting increasingly hostile to it. It struggles to break down bulky teams and more offensive builds are usually much more scared of Shaymin.

Tsareena 4 -> 3 metagame is so priority prominent, ladder loves its prio bs, so tsareena is a great mon in so many teams. helps so much vs azu and thund, makes scizor reconsider its plays, etc.

Latias-Mega Baton Pass.

The goal is to work towards passing an Iron Defense + at least one speed boost to Latias, who can then tear open the majority of teams; those plus a Calm Mind give Latias a 120 base power stab, which is usually more than enough for most situations. This team is relatively weak to: Darkrai and Pheromosa, who are some of the few serious threats to a boosted Latias; Taunt, which shuts down Latias's ability to Recover; Bisharp, which can bait a boost; Roar, because you can't do anything about it; Random Toxics, because then you just lose.

Stored Power ensures Latias beats Cresselia eventually.

A single bad play also kills it, but this team is a ton of fun.


Latios-Mega Offense

This team originally had Soul Dew Latios but it struck me that the mega stone was, for the most part, the same thing but mostly better in this situation. Getting an Azumarill sweep is a major priority, but the team can function without Azu ever sweeping - it still hits decently hard all things considered - and features a decent mix of relatively bulky, relatively strong attackers to clear the way.

Weak to: Cresselia, some Trick Room offense, Pheromosa, strong speed control.


Victini Semi-room / balance.

Last slot is optional; you can very easily fit any tailwind user, or a second trick room user and remove the speed evs. I actually used a bulky Scizor spread most. Other cool choices for that slot: Skymin, Terrakion, Pheromosa, Hydreigon, Gengar, Buzzwole, Tornadus, Kyurem, Thundurus, any scarfer. Scizor's spread lets it live a Gigavolt Havok from Thundurus, and a All-Out Pummeling from Terrakion while still 3hkoing lefties Cresselia. Victini's spread, similarly, lets it live quite a few super effective hits so it can get to breaking down teams with V-create, without losing damage that it badly needs; unfortunately, +2 V-create can still fail to ohko some greater defensive threats, so rocks are often important.

I chose Quick Attack over CM on sub Sylveon because this team feels rather weak to a lot of mons that regularly carry Focus Sash, and ensuring that they die felt important.

Weak to: Semi-room teams with a harsher balance between fast/slow; getting haxed; Deoxys; weird shit; Thundurus, especially HP Flying or like, z-fly or something crazy; Tornadus; Aerodactyl-Mega; Cresselia; Sp Def Victini; Landorus.

The team was made with the objective of tackling the meta threats, and the first few Pokemon that came to my mind was Mew/Musharna/Mega-Char-X. Gyarados was chosen as the Mega of the team since it handles these threats rather well. I was worried about opposing Water-type Pokemon like Blastoise/Primarina walling me, and decided to try out Raikou. Raikou works surprisingly well in this meta, as it can OHKO Togekiss and any Water-type Pokemon with Z-Move, can provide Snarl support, and sets up Reflect, which when combined with two Intimidate users increases your defensive capabilities a lot. HP Fire is my tech of choice to deal with Scizor which is quite common in the meta-game. Naturally, I needed an out to Azumarill + redirection, and something to help set up Dragon Dance on Gyarados. Togekiss and Hitmontop with Quick Guard serves this role perfectly. Helping Hand boosted Crunch can OHKO M-Slowbro and deal a huge chunk to Cresselia (OHKO if at +1). Due to how common Mega-Charizard X is, I figured I needed another out, and Latios seemed like a good addition that can also take down annoying threats like Blaziken/Conkeldurr/Terrakion/Hitmontop etc, while also serving as a secondary Tailwind setter. Finally, Scarf Victini with Final Gambit was added to take down faster threats quickly, and to deal with Scizor and Grass-types better. U-Turn + Eject Button on Hitmontop helps with positioning to maintain momentum.

Most of the EV's are standard spread taken from the damage calculator, with Victini being an exception as its HP EV's allows it to OHKO any Pokemon with a base HP of 88 or below with Final Gambit, as Choice Scarf makes up for its lack of Speed EV's.

The classic bread & butter lead aimed at setting up Dragon Dance as soon as possible. Eject Button helps me get a rather safe switch in to my offensive Pokemon like Raikou and Latios. This is mostly recommended vs TR oriented teams. Safeguard Togekiss is the safer choice vs potential Z-TR, since their setter then becomes a liability.

My Anti-CharX set up lead. Gigavolt Havoc OHKO's Togekiss while Latios either sets up Tailwind or proceeds to OHKO their Mega. The offensive coverage is strong enough to handle threats like Scizor/Musharna/Breloom, while I have also have the option to set up a Reflect early game which helps my own set up strategy later on.

Got a z move which can do jackshit to nuke and setup in once is dum. In addition with new reliable stabin Close Combat, three usable abilities, and plenty of coverage options to run this mon, this should be tier 1 because its sogood but tier 1.5 is is fine i guess.

It's inconsistent, confusing, generally stupid and bothers me to no end. Could we please fix this garbage

Anyways, some thoughts on the new mons.

Suicune. I love building with this - it's super bulky and surprisingly versatile. It's evs can be customized to live all sorts of things, and it's moves can be designed to help it fit nearly any team composition. Inner Focus is a fantastic ability; while fake out isn't overwhelmingly common, the ability to put up tailwind in the face of mons like new drop Weaville and most Skymin is fantastic (a note on Suicune's bulk; 252/0 is only ohko'd 62.5% of the time by a LIFE ORB Skymin). Snarl and Reflect can let it provide a huge amount of team support despite being fairly passive, Scald burns are never not useful, and Roar lets it shuffle attackers. Great mon, and I feel it'll do a great job helping fill part of the void left by Cress.

Blacephalon. I think people are still struggling a bit to figure out what this thing can do - but it's very good. Scarf feels a little lame at the moment, with bulky waters Suicune and Milotic being new drops, and Rotom-Wash having gotten better (more on that later). It also has an awkward speed tier to function without speed control - but speed control feels pretty good now, with Suicune and Icy Wind Milotic being easy first choices for a lot of teams. Life Orb / Ghostium / Firium sets can smack holes in bulkier teams. I think Beast Boost ends up feeling a little like a trap ability - Blacephalon is easy to revenge kill, and doesn't really get to make much use out of it in my opinion.

Gardevoir-Mega. Ridiculously good. It's stabs have good neutral coverage, it has good synergy with a lot of mons, and is very bulky on the special side. Trick Room sets are great, 3 attack sets are great, it's great.

Weavile. I think this is also an excellent mon; it's pretty strong, it's very fast, and it has fake out. It's frail, it's typing sucks defensively, and it can struggle with bulky waters, but I think this fits very well into the meta.

Milotic. While Intimidate isn't that widespread, limiting it's access to it's excellent ability Competitive, Milotic is a great bulky water that fills a void Suicune doesn't quite fill, because Milotic has more power and self-recovery in exchange for tailwind, snarl, and reflect. On top of that, Coil can turn Milo into an annoying sleep inducer that's hard to ignore.

Mawile-Mega. Cool mon that provides Intimidate support while being a very hard hitter with usable priority in Sucker Punch. Can customize it's move to beat almost anything, but I think it'll end up having 4mss in practice. I don't have very much experience with this, but it's certainly scary to face.

And some thoughts on old mons that gained new moves in USUM - holding off on new noms until I really get a feel for the meta:

Rotom-Wash. Gained Ally Switch, which is a very cool support move, and with bulky waters being a thing now I think this has gotten a lot better.

Kommo-O. Clangorous is really cool, but I think it often ends up feel lackluster after setting up. I have no idea what moves to use on this because Close Combat seems cool - but then I'm splitting EVs between two rather low stats. Flamethrower + Steel move seems like the best choice to me.

here are our votes on the new mons. note: with the new tiering system, everything will simply move down a tier, EXCEPT FOR our new drops, so ranked 1.5 mons become tier 2, tier 2 becomes 3, etc. however, necrozma is tier 2 and kommo-o is tier 3 and they will stay there, but pheromosa was voted from tier 4 to tier 3, and with the new system, it will remain tier 4, since tier 3 mons become 4 and tier 4 mons become 5. hope that makes sense lol.

Tried building today around a Weavile + Gardevoir TW team. The two suffer from the presence of Scizor, so packing solid answers to him helps a million. Shaymin/Rotom/Entei for a FWG core that has a fast heavy attacker in Shaymin, bulky Volt Switch with Rotom, and a powerful crippling attack in Entei's Sacred Fire. Roar keeps Trick Room off the field when facing such a team, and Safety Goggles keeps Breloom off my nuts. Salamence's Intimidate, Ground immunity, powerful STAB, and Tailwind all make him a fantastic setter of it, although him and Shaymin share the same weakness to the newly added Weavile as well as Thundurus-I. Fake Out support in Weavile allows plenty of flexibility in getting off damage, Tailwind, a safer switch, etc. Gardevoir is EVd to live Sludge Bomb from Lando-I although Weavile's presence scares the shit out of him anyways.

The team can handle most threats tossed it's way, and I'm trying to get good testing going on to see where my holes are. I'm still a bit new to DUU and it's hard to get the ladder going some days. I could be persuaded to run something other than HP Fire on Gardevoir, I just couldn't think of a better option. Taunt, Icy Wind, Focus Blast, Disable idk. Need to think it over, probably going with Taunt

Gonna nom Mawile-Mega to tier 3 since we missed it and I have experience with it now.

It's got an excellent type, strong priority, and a wide array of coverage options. It's also slow, has bad 4mss, and has absolutely horrible special bulk and barely decent physical bulk without Intimidate support. It has to choose between bulk and speed in many situations - 252/0 lives a LO Keldeo Hydro Pump, for example, while near max speed is required to outspeed Skymin in tailwind.

It can run a lot of different coverage moves, as Play Rough has fantastic neutral coverage, and Sucker Punch hits one of the best fairy resists at the moment, Victini. Fire Fang can be used to hit Scizor-Mega and Metagross, Iron Head hits Venusaur and ohkos Togekiss, and Swords Dance can turn it into a terrifying monster.

I think 3 is appropriate because it's flaws make it fairly difficult to fit into teams.

I'd also like to nom Rotom-Wash to tier 4 or higher. Ally Switch is a great move, and a Suicune check is a welcome addition to many teams. There's not a whole lot of other things to say about it, as it still has all the flaws that made it awkward in SM, but ally switch gives it the ability to fit into teams a lot better than it used to, and helps enable it to run bulkier / less offensive sets if necessary, as it's less worried (but still a little worried) about being passive.

gonna post some post round 1 vr nominations that we will vote on after i post - just some changes that better reflect the power or utility of certain pokemon in a now more developed metagame

Kommo-o: Tier 3 -> Tier 2:
We obviously underestimated this pokemon's power, and while it is still manageable enough due to its piss poor defensive typing, this pokemon is clearly far better than everything else in tier 3.

Gothitelle: UR -> Tier 4
A clear under-ration(?) on our part by excluding Gothitelle all this time. Shadow tag is an extremely good ability, and when paired with monstrous set up sweepers like Kommo-o or Azumarill trapping becomes even stronger. Good special bulk and utility in Heal Pulse/Helping Hand further cements this as a solid Pokemon.

  • Demantoid: I think the goth should be higher. Provides great support to lots of mons including Elite Water Azumarill and pairs well with mons like Mega Manectric.
  • Talkingtree: I think that’s still too low, Goth should be at least tier 3, if not 2. Trapping and support is hugely beneficial for the many setup attackers in the tier (CurseMuk, Kommo-o, Azu, MSciz, PZ, etc), and Goth has the bulk and movepool to perform extremely well.
