[OVERVIEW]

Araquanid is an offensive setter of Sticky Web that can also double as a wallbreaker if needed. It has a good amount of special bulk, allowing it to set up Sticky Web versus many threats in a pinch such as Hydreigon, Celebi, and even defensive variants of Rotom-W. Its Water / Bug typing and its high-powered Liquidation by virtue of Water Bubble let Araquanid soft check several Pokemon like Mamowine, Cobalion, Gliscor, and Infernape. However, Araquanid's typing also causes it to have a bad matchup versus common special attackers such as Mega Manectric, Mega Pidgeot, and special variants of Mega Altaria despite its special bulk, and its Stealth Rock weakness and lack of reliable recovery limit its longevity across the game. Araquanid's low Speed stat also gives it a number of issues, causing it to be outsped by almost every offensive Pokemon, meaning it will often have to take a hit before moving. Outside of its ability to set Sticky Web, Araquanid fails to set itself apart from the other hard-hitting Water-types like Crawdaunt and Azumarill, so its niche lies solely on teams that need Sticky Web support.

Moves
========

Sticky Web slows the opposing team's grounded Pokemon upon them switching in, which lets Araquanid support its teammates' attempts at sweeping. Due to the power boost from Water Bubble, Liquidation is capable of 2HKOing threats like Cobalion and bulky Scizor. Toxic lets Araquanid cripple common switch-ins to Liquidation like Suicune, Rotom-W, and Azumarill. Magic Coat bounces back entry hazards and status moves like Stealth Rock, Taunt, and Toxic, which lets Araquanid take advantage of other hazard setters like Swampert and Klefki and beat Taunt users like Azelf and Gliscor. Lunge gives Araquanid the ability to heavily damage threats such as Latias, Hydreigon, Serperior, and Mega Sceptile, and it can also provide some setup opportunities for the rest of the team by lowering the foe's Attack stat.

Set Details
========

228 Speed EVs allow Araquanid to outspeed Blissey, Mantine, and bulky variants of Scizor. 24 HP and 20 Defense EVs guarantee that Araquanid will survive a Thunderbolt from Mega Manectric or a Crunch from Mega Sharpedo from full health. The other 236 EVs are placed into Attack with an Adamant nature to make Araquanid hit as hard as possible. Water Bubble gives Araquanid a resistance to Fire-type attacks and doubles the power of its Water-type attacks, giving it an impressive amount of offensive presence. If there is no other Z-Move user on the team, Araquanid can viably use Waterium Z to surprise potential switch-ins with a 160-Base Power Water Bubble-boosted Hydro Vortex.

Usage Tips
========

Araquanid should not be led with every game, as it is not a suicide lead. Instead, wait for the proper opportunity to set Sticky Web such as versus a Choice-locked Infernape or a special attacker like Hydreigon. Bring Araquanid in versus Pokemon that cannot do much to it, such as Infernape lacking Stone Edge, Cobalion, and Celebi. Use Liquidation to weaken the opposing team and net as many KOs as possible, possibly forgoing setting Sticky Web to do so if KOing Pokemon like Scizor and Cobalion is more beneficial to your team's success. Several Pokemon that check Araquanid, like Mega Manectric and Mega Sharpedo, are only able to OHKO it after Stealth Rock, so if Araquanid is at full health, it can opt to take a hit from one of these checks and deal heavy damage or set Sticky Web in return. Use Lunge primarily versus threats that both resist Liquidation and are weak to Lunge, as Liquidation deals more damage otherwise. Lunge can also be used when sacrificing Araquanid versus a physical attacker in order to provide setup opportunities for the other members of your team. Magic Coat should be used to bounce back status moves like Taunt and Stealth Rock, but it cannot deter the setting of entry hazards entirely because Magic Coat has fewer PP than entry hazard moves. In addition, the move requires good prediction to be used properly, as Magic Coat can easily backfire if the foe uses an attack instead. If a Pokemon like Mamoswine or Cobalion is on the opposing team, try to conserve as much of Araquanid's health as possible by minimizing the number of times it switches in while hazards are on the field and setting Sticky Web only when Araquanid would not take massive damage in the process.

Team Options
========

Araquanid fits only on Sticky Web offense, as its niche is to set Sticky Web. For this reason, partners that take advantage of Sticky Web's Speed drops are crucial, such as Mamoswine, Mienshao, Lucario, and Starmie. Because Araquanid is slow and vulnerable to all entry hazards, Rapid Spin users like Starmie make good partners for Araquanid to let it perform its role optimally. Defog users are less desired partners than Rapid Spin users due to Araquanid's Sticky Web being removed with the use of Defog. Ground-types like Gliscor and Mamoswine can check the Electric-types such as Mega Manectric that would otherwise heavily damage Araquanid, and Ground-types can also damage opposing Tentacruel and Empoleon, which can switch in on Araquanid. Grass- and Electric-types like Serperior, Mega Sceptile, and Mega Manectric can help to check the Water-types like Alomomola and Azumarill that Araquanid struggles to break past. Araquanid enjoys Stealth Rock support from Pokemon like Mamoswine and Cobalion, as this eases its attempts to KO foes. Offensive Ghost-types like Chandelure and even Decidueye can be used in order to prevent Sticky Web from being removed by Rapid Spin in a pinch. However, all spinners normally carry methods to KO or cripple the Ghost-types of the tier, so carrying a spinblocker is far from necessary on the team. Steel-types like Scizor and Cobalion can be used in order to check Rock-types like Terrakion, Mega Aerodactyl, and Nihilego that can force Araquanid out.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Mirror Coat and Icy Wind can also be used on the Sticky Web set. Mirror Coat is used to retaliate against a large number of special attackers like Mega Manectric, Latias, and Primarina if Araquanid is at full health, but it is somewhat unreliable as a move because Araquanid does not always wish to take large amounts of damage, and it also requires accurate prediction to use correctly or else it invites opportunities for the foe to set up. Icy Wind can be used in order to provide additional support for your team by lowering the foe's Speed, but Araquanid struggles to fit it over its other more reliable move options. A trapping set utilizing Spider Web, Toxic, Liquidation, and Rest can be used in order to function as an adequate stallbreaker and lure to bulky Water-types like Alomomola, but it has little use outside of this purpose and struggles to do anything remarkable versus other playstyles. In addition, the Spider Web set is for the most part outclassed by Whirlpool Perish Song Azumarill. Araquanid can attempt to use a Choice Band set to function solely as a wallbreaker, but this set is outperformed by Crawdaunt and Azumarill due to their better offensive typings, neutrality to Stealth Rock, and higher damage output in Crawdaunt's case.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Entry Hazard Removers**: Defog and Rapid Spin users like Mantine, Empoleon, and Tentacruel can remove the Sticky Web that Araquanid sets, and these three in particular can easily switch into Araquanid as well.

**Flying-types**: Pokemon like Mega Aerodactyl and Mega Pidgeot can easily force out Araquanid and are unaffected by Sticky Web. Some Flying-types like Crobat can also remove Araquanid's hazards with Defog. However, they cannot switch into Araquanid's Liquidation.

**Water-types**: Pokemon like Alomomola, Mantine, and Suicune can come in on Liquidation and perform their roles, even if they often cannot KO Araquanid outright. Volcanion, Seismitoad, and Gastrodon are especially troublesome due to their immunities to Water-type attacks.

**Other Super Effective Attackers**: Electric-types like Mega Manectric and Rotom-W and Rock-types like Terrakion and Nihilego can easily force out Araquanid, even if they cannot switch in directly.

  • Small thing but the hazard removal line that includes keeping Araquanid as healthy as possible seems like it's worded a bit strongly. Maybe change it to something about it being generally less effective at its role if chipped down, especially given its vulnerability to all hazards and its low speed.
Other Options
  • Include that the Spider Web trapper set is outclassed by Perish Trap Azu
