[insert super fancy art here]

Welcome everyone to SM CAP's 2nd Official Project: Partner this Pokemon! Hosted by myself, every week I will put forth any legal Pokemon in the SM CAP Metagame (Usually either a CAP Mon or a new SM Mon) and you, the community, will submit a Pokemon you think partners well with it! You will post both the set of the Pokemon in mind and then a short description of why you think your Pokemon is the best.

Rules and Mechanics

Here's the process of how this competition will be hosted
  1. Five (5) days of submitting a Pokemon you think partners well with the Pokemon I put forth.
  2. Two (2) days of voting for the Pokemon you think partners the best.
  3. Generally submitting will be Thursday - Monday, voting Tuesday - Wednesday.
Submitting Pokemon: Please include the following when submitting your Pokemon.
  • Sprite of your Pokemon, found here, preferably set to "bw"
  • The set of your Pokemon, preferably in a hide tag.
  • The description of your Pokemon, preferably in a hide tag.
  • Basically, include a sprite and two hide tags, one with the set and one with the description.
Please do not put the Sprite inside any of your hide tags!

Winning: If you win, then congratulations! You'll have your name and Pokemon featured on the SM CAP "Partner this Pokemon" Hall of Fame yay.

Copying Pokemon: Please don't. This just ruins the fun we can get out of this competition and is against the rules. You'll be DQd from the week if you were found copying other people's Pokemon. If you suspect someone of doing this, PM me. Hopefully no one would do this but take this as a warning.

On Bandwagoning / Namevoting: Please don't do this either. Don't just vote for a guy just because they have a ton of votes already or they're famous. Don't feel pressured to vote for anyone for any reason other than having the best team. If you really think a Pokemon is the best out there, vote for that Pokemon; don't let anything pressure you to do otherwise. Bandwagoning just ruins the spirit of this competition and isn't cool :[

On Suggestions: If you have any suggestions for this competition, feel free to PM me. It'll be considered but there are ultimately no promises if it'll be implemented though.

Tiers: A week is for SM CAP unless stated otherwise.

HALL OF FAME
Week 1: Life Orb 4 Attacks Syclant by snake_rattler

Syclant @ Life Orb
Ability: Mountaineer
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Nature: Timid
- Ice Beam
- Bug Buzz
- Earth Power
- U-Turn

Rotom-W @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 248 HP / 252 Def / 8 Spe
Bold Nature
-Volt Switch
-Hydro Pump
-Will-O-Wisp
-Pain Split

A classic from Gen 6! Since sparktrain sniped my Tapu Lele, I'm going with another priority stopper. Rotom-W can switch into most priority moves (rip Gale Wings though) and can make a great Voltturn core with Syclant. It can switch into Mega Metagross and Weavile with ease (unlike Tapu Lele). I'd prefer Spikes on Syclant since Rotom-W forces swiches, but Rotom-W will probably be one of Syclant's partners for balance teams.

Week 2: Bulk Up Revenankh by LucarioOfLegends

Revenankh @ Leftovers
Ability: Shed Skin
EVs: 252 HP / 88 Atk / 120 Def / 48 SpD
Impish Nature
- Bulk Up
- Drain Punch
- Shadow Sneak
- Moonlight

Muk-Alola @ Assault Vest
Ability: Poison Touch
EVs: 248 HP / 232 Atk / 24 SpD
Brave Nature
- Knock Off
- Fire Blast
- Poison Jab
- Pursuit

Due to the influx of Faeries in SuMo, Revenankh has had trouble getting established in the CAP meta. What Mr. Muk does, luckily, is fight these Fairy types for it and take out Revenankh greatest threat: Clefable. Muk also can check the Tapus fairly easily, as Tapu Bulu has a quad weakness to Poison Jab, Muk can switch into Psychic without consequence, and Tapu Koko and Fini do not appreciate a Poison Jab to the face. It also has the added benefit of Poisoning foes using its STAB moves, which could help give Revenankh KOs. Finally, it has great special defense, meaning it can digest special attacks fairly well and punish the attacker.

Week 3: Physically Defensive Pyroak by DarkSlay

Pyroak @ Leftovers
Ability: Battle Armor
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Lava Plume
- Giga Drain
- Leech Seed
- Stealth Rock

Mega Sableye @ Sablenite
Ability: Magic Bounce
EVs: 252 HP / 160 Def / 96 SpD / 4 Spe
Careful Nature
- Recover
- Knock Off
- Will-O-Wisp
- Toxic

Mega Sableye is a great Pokemon to pair with Pyroak, as it provides amazing utility, hazard defense, and good Special bulk to pair with Pyroak's Physical bulk. Typing-wise, these two don't share any common weaknesses. Pyroak resists Fairy, which Mega Sableye is weak to, while Sableye resists Poison, which Pyroak appreciates from time to time. Pyroak is also a decent switch-in into Scald and Lava Plume, which often bypass Mega Sableye's ability defense. Mega Sableye is a capable Rapid Spin blocker, meaning Pyroak's Stealth Rocks will be out on the field much longer. Magic Bounce is a counter to opposing Stealth Rock and Toxic users, two things Pyroak doesn't particularly like. Knock Off is really good for Pyroak too, as eliminating items from Choice users (or just items in general) will help Pyroak live longer. Mega Sableye being a decent switch-in into Knock Off also helps Pyroak keep his Leftovers. Dual status for Mega Sableye is interesting, since it can't be Taunted and gives Pyroak a hand against otherwise prominent threats including Tomohawk (Sableye beats it one on one), [Mega] Crucibelle, (cripples it), and Tyranitar (while still a threat, it being Burned helps in the long run), among others.

Week 4: Trick Room Fidgit by sparktrain

Fidgit @ Black Sludge
Ability: Persistent
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
IVs: 0 SpA
- Trick Room
- U-turn
- Rapid Spin
- Spikes

Magearna @ Shuca Berry
Ability: Soul-Heart
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpA / 4 SpD
Quiet Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 0 Spe
- Trick Room
- Fleur Cannon
- Flash Cannon
- Volt Switch

It's never a bad idea to have a backup setter on a Trick Room team, and Magearna's typing and stat distribution make it a great candidate for the job. Though Fidgit and Magearna do share a Ground weakness, this can be patched up fairly well with Shuca Berry (lefties aren't really necessary), allowing Magearna to get off another use of TR against Pokemon it normally wouldn't be able to, such as Landorus-T. The set itself is pretty straightforward. Max HP and SpA, minimum Speed, Trick Room, STABs to hit stuff, and Volt Switch to pivot out to a breaker.

Week 5: Life Orb Stratagem by reachzero

Stratagem @ Life Orb
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Paleo Wave
- Fire Blast
- Earth Power
- Energy Ball

Tapu Lele @ Mind Plate
Ability: Psychic Surge
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Psyshock
- Moonblast
- Focus Blast
- Hidden Power [Fire]

Tapu Lele is an ideal partner for Stratagem because it fulfills one of the prime desires for Stratagem--breaking Special walls--while also providing protection that no other Pokemon can viably offer: immunity to priority attacks. While Stratagem itself is unfortunately immune to Psychic Terrain when it uses Levitate, all-out attacker Stratagem is virtually always found on heavy offense teams, since it doesn't offer the utility of, say, Tapu Koko. This kind of team will nearly always carry Pokemon like Pheromosa and Syclant, which practically demand Tapu Lele. In particular, when Psychic Terrain is up, Mega Metagross and Mega Scizor are entirely removed as threats to heavy offense, and these two Pokemon are major factors against the viability of the archetype. Mind Plate on Lele lets you actually break Chansey and is a major issue for stall, an archetype against which Stratagem can often feel like dead weight.

Week 6: Bulk Up Arghonaut by reachzero

Arghonaut @ Leftovers
Ability: Unaware
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
IVs: 0 SpA
- Bulk Up
- Drain Punch
- Gunk Shot
- Earthquake

Heatran @ Grassium Z
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 32 HP / 252 SpA / 224 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Magma Storm
- Earth Power
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Solar Beam

That being said, the best partner for Arghonaut, as listed here, is unquestionably Heatran. It hard checks or outright counters a bunch of Pokemon on Argho's counter list, and lures and destroys others. Heatran resists Air Slash, though its odds of threatening defensive Tomohawk out are unfortunate, since Magma Storm does 47.3 - 56% (a 25.8% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery) and Tomohawk to spam Roost to fish for misses. It's still a good pivot against defensive Tomohawk.Heatran 4x resists Grass and threatens out Bulu (unless it switches in on Superpower), Mega Venusaur (without Earthquake), etc. Heatran lures bulky Waters, most notably Tapu Fini, trapping with Magma Storm and destroying it with Bloom Doom. For Recover Arghonaut, Pyroak is arguably a better partner. But for Bulk Up Arghonaut, Heatran is practically mandatory.

Week 7: Choice Scarf Kitsunoh by YellowAdminSilver

Kitsunoh @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Frisk
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
IVs: 0 SpA
- Iron Head
- Shadow Strike
- U-turn
- Trick

Kerfluffle @ Life Orb
Ability: Natural Cure
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Moonblast
- Aura Sphere / Focus Blast
- Hidden Power [Ground]
- Parting Shot

So, first of all, Kit struggles with a couple of mons such as Colo, Cyclohm and Tomo, all of which it draws in (especially the latter two I guess). All of the above are also prime opportunities for Kit to U-Turn to Kerfluffle for it to blast off one of its powerful Moonblasts. Alternatively, these also provide an opportunity for Kerf to click Parting Shot on a predicted switch and keep the VoltTurn chain going.

On the other hand, Kerf draws in bulky Psychic- and Fairy-types, all of which can be taken advantage of with Kit's STABs. Kit's Steel typing also allows it to pivot into Kerf's Flying and Poison weaknesses in a pinch, perhaps less so for the latter since Poison is usually seen on stuff like Mollux and Plasmanta which threaten Kit with their other STABs. Speaking of Mollux and Plasmanta, Kit's Steel STAB frees up one of Kerf's moveslots and lets it run HP Ground over Sludge Wave for it to chunk those 4x weaks.

Week 8: Physically Defensive Cyclohm by sparktrain

Cyclohm @ Leftovers
Ability: Static
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Discharge
- Fire Blast
- Toxic
- Slack Off

Celesteela @ Leftovers
Ability: Beast Boost
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Leech Seed
- Protect
- Heavy Slam
- Earthquake

Physically Defensive Cyclohm and Specially Defensive Celesteela form a solid defensive core. Celesteela covers Cyclohm's weaknesses to Dragon, Fairy, and Ground, while Cyclohm handles Celesteela's weaknesses to Fire and Electric. Together, they do an excellent job of handling several of the best Megas in the metagame, including Metagross, Crucibelle, and Scizor. Cyclohm running Fire Blast makes it easier for Celesteela to run Earthquake over Flamethrower, which allows Celesteela to better handle Heatran and Magnezone among other things that could otherwise threaten the core.

Week 9: Flame Orb Colossoil by ?????????

Colossoil @ Flame Orb
Ability: Guts
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
IVs: 0 SpA
- Earthquake
- Knock Off
- Sucker Punch
- Pursuit

Week 1 begins! Thank you for your patience and let's hopefully get a lot of actively for this project!

This week, we'll be partnering....

Life Orb 4 Attacks Syclant, the first ever CAP mon! With 116 / 114 / 121 offenses, Syclant is an excellent wall breaker with its wide range of coverage. Syclant was ok in XY being commonly used to break down teams and set up Spikes to win the hazard war. Tail Glow turns it into a dangerous sweeper who doesn't have to worry about rocks because of Mountaineer. What as always head it back is its 70 / 70 / 64 defenses which lets it be KOd by common threats. I personally haven't seen it used yet in SM so I am very excited.

Deadline of submitting a partner Pokemon is Monday 11 PM EST (GMT -5)

Syclant @ Life Orb
Ability: Mountaineer
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Nature: Timid
- Ice Beam
- Bug Buzz
- Earth Power
- U-Turn

Tapu Lele @ Choice Specs
Ability: Psychic Surge
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Psychic
- Moonblast
- Focus Blast / Hidden Power Fire
- Psyshock / Hidden Power Fire
Like many fast and frail mons, Syclant really likes being under the effects of Psychic Terrain, as it no longer has to worry about being easily revenged by moves like Bullet Punch and Sucker Punch. Funny how LO Syclant becomes a Caw check under Psychic Terrain... anyway, Tapu Lele and Syclant synergize really well together offensively. Syclant just pivots out of the fat stuff it has trouble with so specs Tapu Lele can nuke it, and Syclant can wear down steels pretty heavily (with the aide of Psychic Terrain support) so that Tapu Lele can more freely click its STABs late game.

Really simple yet highly effective core.

Tapu Koko @ Leftovers
Ability: Electric Surge
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- U-turn
- Thunderbolt
- Dazzling Gleam
- Volt Switch

Tapu Koko and Syclant form an amazing VoltTurn core that can catch many users off guard. Their speed and offensive capabilities more than make up for their mediocre type synergy. They both simply either KO an opposing pokemon or chip it with a Volt Switch or U-turn making them fantastic partners for a VoltTurn core.

Cyclohm @ Leftovers
Ability: Static
EVs: 252 HP / 100 Def / 140 SpD / 16 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Slack Off
- Discharge
- Flamethrower
- Heal Bell

Syclant and Cyclohm are great partners in terms of defending each other from a variety of threats that can prove to check or counter them. For example, Syclant has problems dealing with some threats such as Cawmodore, Keldeo, Mega Metagross, Mega Scizor, Tornadus (if running AV), Mega Pinsir, and so on. Cyclohm can tank hits made by these pokemon, running Slack Off to recover lost HP as if it were never effected. It's ability can be able to affect any physical attackers to give Syclant an advantage to outspeed it, with a chance of the pokemon to get paralyzed and inability to move during a specific turn. It is proven to be useful as Syclant be able to U-Turn to let Cyclohm to deal with the specific pokemon that can screw over Syclant. In the case of Cyclohm, it has problem with Ice and Ground coverage (in terms of Ice and Ground type moves), though these type of moves are resistant against Syclant. Syclant can be able to switch-in when these moves are in play to gain an advantage against some pokemon that may be a threat to Cyclohm, but not a threat to Syclant. Even though Stratagem can be able to bop both of these pokemon via the LO set (consisting of Flamethrower / Fire Blast and Earth Power), Syclant and Cyclohm can work together in terms of defense in order to deal with threats they would normally face, like Colossoil (just hope it doesn't run Sucker Punch) for an instance.

Well, might as well add more of the Guardian Quartet to the mix.
(Note: I seem to really like defensive solutions :|)

Tapu Fini @ Leftovers
Ability: Misty Surge
EVs: 252 HP / 136 Def / 120 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
-Calm Mind
-Surf
-Aqua Ring
-Protect

Out from the gate, Syclant immediately benefits from Misty Surge, making one of its worst checks, paralysis, out of the way. Misty Terrain also greatly increases the lifespan of both, as they don't have to worry about Toxic shortening it. Into typing, both mons have typings that complement each other, and compliment each others stats nicely. Tapu Fini's solid defenses and respectable offenses allow it to fight faster stuff that outspeeds Syclant, and covers its Rock and Fire weakness well. On the contrary, Syclant can smash through bulkier stuff using is great offenses and speed, and covers Fini's Poison and Grass weakness with great efficiency.

Kitsunoh the god

Kitsunoh @ Leftovers
Ability: Frisk
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Meteor Mash
- Will-O-Wisp
- Defog
- U-turn

What kitsunoh does it pressure all of syclants common threats. Pokemon like scizor and clefable are u-turn bait for kitsunoh to just come in and either burn something, get more momentum or remove potential spikes. Kitsunoh isn't exactly an aggressive partner with syclant, however syclant is able to deal with a ton of fire types which may want to gain momentum on kitsunoh's (such as mollux, heatran) which makes kitsunohs wisp spamming job that much easier and then eventually giving syclant room to clean up late game due to the amount of weakened foes you've caused.

Ending 40 minutes early since I need to sleep and nobody else wanted to vote in the PS! Room.

There was a tie between Broken Phobias and snake_rattler so I am going to cast my vote for snake_rattler so congratulations to you! You and your Pokemon will be featured in the SM CAP Partner this Pokemon HoF!

For Week 2 we'll be partnering.....

Bulk Up Revenankh! With 90 / 90 / 110 Defenses and a base 110 Attack, Revenankh is an effective Bulk Up user. Shadow Sneak / Drain Punch hits every type for at least neutral damage and can heal itself with Moonlight. The 2nd CAP Pokemon ever created has not seen much love so far in Sun & Moon so hopefully this will change it!

Revenankh @ Leftovers
Ability: Shed Skin
EVs: 252 HP / 88 Atk / 120 Def / 48 SpD
Impish Nature
- Bulk Up
- Drain Punch

Gyarados @ Flynium Z

Jolly Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Waterfall
- Earthquake
- Bounce
What does Bulk Up Revenankh hate with all of its hea-...its wrappings? Tomohawk, of course! Gyarados is a really fun lure for Tomohawk. After all, everyone's favorite panic button for a Dragon Dance sweeper is reliable defense Prankster Hazehawk, but it's in for a supersonic surprise:

252 Atk Gyarados Supersonic Skystrike vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Tomohawk: 392-464 (94.6 - 112%) -- 68.8% chance to OHKO

Stealth Rock helps out so you don't miss the KO on Tomohawk, because Tomohawk can easily Roost off the damage. Supersonic Skystrike also hits bulky Grass-types that Revenankh doesn't like. In addition, Gyarados can set up a Dragon Dance while Tapu Koko switches in, removing it for Revenankh as well.

While Gyarados can run Moxie, I prefer Intimidate, which can soften enemy blows for it and Revenankh, and can act as a soft check for threats like Pheramosa, non-Thunderbolt Genesect, and Colossoil.

EVs: 200 HP / 252 SpA / 56 SpD
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Ice Beam
- Scald
- Grass Knot

Can we just all agree that these two pokemon have amazing type synergy. Not only this but they form a nice balance core that looks great on paper. Empoleon switches in on many of Revenankh threats and it does the same for Empoleon. Not only this but Empoleon is a very flexible Pokemon and doesn't necessarily need to run the set posted above. It has both Stealth Rock and Defog to give it a nice Specially Defensive Support set. All in all these two pokemon partner well with each other and what's even better is that Empoleon is not often seen on ladder making it even cooler to use.

The synergy works well with Revenankh's weaknesses, despite Revenankh taking neutral from Ground.

Also, do the mods intend to cover every CAP in this thread at least once?
