It's the arena you've seen many times in the past, whether in person or in your dreams. But that's behind you. What's now is the floor underneath your feet. What's real is the gaze of the man across the field. It follows you to your set position, and you break the eye contact to uncomfortably glance down at your spot, shuffling your feet on the packed dirt. You bend over slightly, fingering your Pokeballs, feeling the tension build in your body like a coiled spring. In the back of your mind, you notice the man across from you do the same, but you focus on the large white circle on the median, waiting for the signal to release. You glance at the referee, and see him looking back at you. You nod, and he turns to your opponent, silently communicating with him as well. At your opponent's own nod, the referee raises his arms. You raise your eyes. He cuts the air with his words: "Battlers ready! FIGHT!" You cut the air with your arm. As the ref releases the tension in the arena, you release the Pokeball in your hand, as does your opponent. In a duet of flashes, the battle begins.

And the battle is on! On one side of the arena is a cool, calm Sneasel sitting alongside a buzzing Combee. Both are facing down a Grubbin wiggling next to a rocking Shellder. The Sneasel sits back as his partner Combee intensifies her buzzing until it cuts the air, slicing at the other side. Grubbin, worried about a second aerial assault, manipulates the particles in the air to erect a sheet of reflective, electromagnetically charged molecules. Shellder peeks out from behind this sheet and launches a series of five rocks at Sneasel. But this, apparently, is what the Sneasel was waiting for. He jumps atop the first rock, leaps off it on the second rock, jumps foward onto the third rock, flips over the fourth, catches the fifth, and slams it back into Shellder's body, dealing the clam much more damage than he dished out. So close to the sheet now, Sneasel reaches out and cleaves it with a karate chop, rendering the immaterial shield unusable. Combee once more rips open the air with her buzzing, except targeting only the Shellder this time. Grubbin, scared of the 2 faster Pokemon facing him down, shoots a sticky, electrically charged web at the two, trapping and slowing them. Shellder once more lauches the rocks at Sneasel, but this time, the icy cat was unprepared, and ends up being launched across the arena from the rocks' force. Sneasel begins to sit back once more, preparing himself as Combee struggles to get out of her snare. Grubbin shoots another layer of web, just to be sure, and Shellder immediately afterwards shoots his five rocks. Sneasel stares them down, and leaps once more! He lands atop the first one, jumps onto the second and the third in quick succession, but he can feel his energy waning. Sneasel's vision begins to blur as he flips over the fourth rock, and, instead of landing over the fifth to grab it, he buckles into the dirt right before the fifth rock, and he catches it square in the torso, unable to battle. Combee watches this in horror, and uses her air cutting technique to free herself from the webs, and attacks her 2 standing opponents as well. Combee slowly falls back, looking to her trainer for some final advice.
