[OVERVIEW]

Numel can turn into a powerful sweeper with its amazing ability Simple, doubling the magnitude of stat changes, which is complemented by its movepool with access to boosting moves like Flame Charge and Growth and powerful STAB options like Fire Blast and Earth Power. Numel also boasts a great typing, being able to check common Grass-, Steel-, and Fire-types like Ferroseed, Magnemite, and Larvesta and sporting an immunity to Thunder Wave as well as a near-unresisted STAB combination. However, this typing leaves Numel with two weaknesses to common types in Ground and Water, making it vulnerable to Diglett before a Flame Charge boost and extremely weak to Aqua Jet from the likes of Corphish and Tirtouga. Numel is also quite slow before a Flame Charge boost, meaning it's susceptible to faster Pokemon, and even with a Flame Charge boost, it is still outsped by fast Choice Scarf users such as Doduo and Gastly. It's not very strong before a Growth boost either, meaning it requires both boosts to be really effective, which will rarely happen in a match because of how fast paced and offensive the LC metagame is. Lastly, Numel faces competition from Ponyta and Larvesta as an offensive Fire-type due to their reliability, with Ponyta sporting recovery and a better Speed stat and Larvesta being able to pivot while sporting a Fighting-type resistance.

Moves
========

Flame Charge is a vital move, as it doubles Numel's Speed stat thanks to Simple while dealing some chip damage, allowing it to outspeed the majority of the metagame. Fire Blast is a powerful STAB move that is able to OHKO Foongus after Stealth Rock before a boost, and after a Growth boost, only Fire-resistant Pokemon and very bulky Pokemon like Spritzee aren't OHKOed by it. Earth Power provides great and accurate neutral coverage with Fire Blast and nails Rock-, Electric-, and Fire-types such as Onix, Elekid, and Ponyta while giving Numel a way to damage Water-types, though it needs a boost from Growth or Groundium Z to do serious damage to them. Growth is used to double Numel's Special Attack stat, giving Numel some much-needed firepower for non-Groundium Z sets and, when combined with a Flame Charge boost, making Numel a terrifying sweeper. If you're running Groundium Z, Stealth Rock is a nice option, as the Special Attack boost from Growth isn't really needed, allowing Numel to set entry hazards if they aren't on the field already.

Set Details
========

Simple is mandatory for this set to function, since it doubles all the stat increases from Flame Charge and Growth. Maximum Special Attack investment with a Modest nature is used to make Numel deal as much damage as possible. 236 Speed EVs are used so that Numel outspeeds 17 Speed Choice Scarf users after a Flame Charge, with the remaining EVs going into HP to boost it by one point. Eviolite is used to give Numel more bulk so it can more easily tank attacks and set up on more Pokemon, while Berry Juice provides recovery Numel much desires to set up on Pokemon it walls. Groundium Z transforms Earth Powerinto a 175-Base Power Tectonic Rage that lets Numel nuke a threat when performing a sweep; for example, it is capable of OHKOing defensive Staryu after Stealth Rock damage and dealing significant damage to bulky Pokemon like Spritzee. A Timid nature could be run to outspeed Choice Scarf Doduo and Gastly, which could otherwise revenge kill Numel after a Flame Charge boost, but the loss of power isn't very favorable.

Usage Tips
========

Numel functions as a late-game sweeper, so it is best to remove any checks and counters, especially Aqua Jet users like Corphish and Tirtouga, before sending Numel in. It should also be switched in on Pokemon it threatens out or Pokemon that can't do much damage to it, like Ferroseed, Magnemite, and Pumpkaboo-XL, to let Numel more easily set up with Flame Charge or Growthor get Stealth Rock up. Flame Charge should generally be used before Growth, as Numel is quite slow before a boost and will likely be outsped and KOed by a switch-in otherwise. Groundium Z sets can work as a lure to Staryu wanting to switch in and trying to remove entry hazards and check Numel, OHKOing them after Stealth Rock damage. It is also useful for taking out a very bulky Pokemon such as Spritzee or Timburr during a sweep. On sets that lack Groundium Z, Numel should tank a hit to set up either Growth or Flame Charge, as it wants both boosts to be able to safely sweep.

Team Options
========

Grass-types such as Foongus and Snivy can deal with the Water- and Ground-types that otherwise check Numel. Even if Numel decides to run Stealth Rock, entry hazard support from Onix, Dwebble, or Ferroseed is still appreciated, as it means Numel doesn't have to risk setting up Stealth Rock itself, giving it an easier time sweeping. Ferroseed is an especially great partner for Numel, as its Grass typing lets it come in on common Water-types and set up entry hazards on them. Knock Off users like Mienfoo, Timburr, and Vullaby soften up bulkier Pokemon like Spritzee and opposing Vullaby, making it easier for Numel to break through them. Mienfoo can even lure in Pokemon Numel beats, such as Pumpkaboo-XL and Foongus, and pivot Numel in with U-turn, making it a great teammate. Memento users such as Diglett and Cottonee lower the foe's offenses while safely bringing Numel in, providing it with more setup opportunities. Staryu makes for a great partner, as it can deal with Water- and Ground-types with its coverage moves and is able to remove Sticky Web, which otherwise halves Numel's Speed, thus requiring an extra turn of setup. It is also able to lure in Ferroseed and Pumpkaboo-XL, Pokemon that Numel can set up on. Alolan Vulpix provides Numel with much-needed bulk and survivability via Aurora Veil support, making it a lot easier for Numel to set up.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Numel can run a slower and bulkier utility set with Stealth Rock, Will-O-Wisp, and Lava Plume; however, it loses to all common spinners in the metagame, making it not very viable. Ancient Power lets Numel hit Archen and Mantyke, which both resist its STAB moves, and has a chance to boost all of its stats by two stages thanks to Simple, but it is weaker than Fire Blast and Earth Power otherwise. Yawn gives setup opportunities to Numel, as it either forces a switch or makes the foe fall asleep, but it is hard to fit on a set. RestTalk can be run as a form of recovery, with Stockpile able to bolster Numel's defenses by two, but this is better done by bulkier Pokemon like Mudbray. Sunny Day is an option to make Growth drastically raise Numel's Special Attack and power up Fire-type moves, but Numel already runs too many setup moves for a third to be considered.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Water-types**: Numel's glaring 4x weakness to Water and lack of Speed before a Flame Charge boost leave it easily checked by the likes of Staryu, Chinchou, and Wingull. Aqua Jet users like Corphish and Tirtouga are especially troublesome, since they can bypass any Flame Charge boosts Numel has acquired. Mantyke, although rare, is the best counter to Numel, as it resists Fire Blast and is immune to Earth Power, making the rare Ancient Power Numel's only way to deal damage to it.

**Ground-types**: Bulkier Ground-types such as Mudbray and Hippopotas aren't 2HKOed by Numel's attacks before Growth and can retaliate and OHKO with Earthquake before recovering any damage taken with Rest or Slack Off. Diglett and Drilbur also outspeed and OHKO Numel if it hasn't used Flame Charge beforehand.

**Revenge Killers**: Faster Choice Scarf users such as Doduo and Gastly can pick off Numel after a single Flame Charge, while priority users like Timburr can ignore any Flame Charge boosts Numel has obtained.

**Archen**: Archen is a good counter to Numel, as it is one of two viable Pokemon that resist both of Numel's STAB types, only fearing the rare Ancient Power, and can OHKO Numel with an Earthquake.

now that this is qc ready i'd like to tag Corporal Levi to look over this once again to truly give a 1/3, as he already gave a check on the original analysis that wasn't implemented by the original writer, which i did on this one.

I think Stealth Rock should be slashed on the first set after Growth, or at least have a moves mention; Groundium Numel doesn't really need Growth. Not 100% sure if defensive is still worth it but leave it for now

[OVERVIEW]
  • Since we're removing the defensive set (see down), edit this overview to no longer mention it.
  • Numel's STAB combo isn't unresisted; Archen, Mantyke, and Wingull exist, and there might be more that I can't think of atm. Just say 'nearly unresisted'
  • Mention that Numel can be outsped by very fast Scarf users, like Doduo, Gastly, Abra, even after a Flame Charge boost.
  • Mention its vulnerability to Diglett before a Speed boost
  • Mention that it's also kinda weak before a Growth, meaning it REALLY needs both boosts to be effective, which it will rarely get
  • Mention extreme vulnerability to AJet
Set: Sweeper

Usage Tips
========
  • Mention that non-Tect Rage Numel kinda needs both boosts before attempting to sweep, since it's simply not strong or fast enough without it. As such, it's generally preferred to tank a hit and set up again compared to attacking w/o a boost.
Team Options
========
  • Mention Mienfoo more specifically, as it can lure in Foongus/Spritzee/Pump-XL and U-turn into Numel for a setup opportunity

I asked around on Discord and it seems most people agree that 'utility numel is poop', as esteemed LCTL OP so eloquently put it. Remove the set

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

• Lava Plume is a STAB move very likely to inflict a burn, crippling physical attackers whilst dealing damage to Grass- and Steel-types like Foongus and Pawniard.
• rocks are rocks, they chip shit
• Earth Power compliments Fire-type moves and is used to hit Rock- and Fire-types like Onix and Ponyta, as well as damage Water-types.
• Will-O-Wisp is a more reliable and consistent way of spreading burns.

Set Details
========

• The given EV spread with a Calm nature allow Numel to hit Eviolite-optimal numbers in both defense stats, letting it switch into special attacks well.
• 156 SpA EVs provide Numel with some firepower when attacking, and allows it to OHKO bulkier Ponyta after Stealth Rock.
• The remainder of EVs go to HP to boost it up by one point.
• Oblivious makes Numel unaffected by Taunt, letting it set up Stealth Rock freely.

Usage Tips
========

• Numel can switch in on several Pokemon such as Ponyta, Ferroseed, Foongus, and Magnemite due to its resistances and can force them out.
• Since these Pokemon are likely to switch out, Numel should use the time to set up Stealth Rock or Will-O-Wisp to cripple most physical attackers if Stealth Rock has already been set.
• It is better to get Stealth Rock up early in the battle to make more effective use out of it.
• Be careful when using Lava Plume and Will-O-Wisp if the opponent has a Timburr, as it can gain an Attack boost by being burned if it has Guts.

Team Options
========

• Grass-types such as Foongus, Snivy, and Pumpkaboo-XL are able to take care of Water and Ground-types which Numel hates, while it can check Ponyta in turn. Additionally, Pumpkaboo-XL makes for a great partner as it is a spinblocker due to its Ghost typing, keeping Stealth Rock on the field.
• Spritzee can heal up Numel with Wish as Numel is prone to being worn down, and in turn Numel covers Spritzee's weaknesses to Poison and Steel.
• Water-types such as Staryu and Chinchou can switch in on most other Water-types and beat them with coverage moves, while being able to check Ground-types, both of which Numel struggles against, and in turn Numel counters Grass-types like Foongus and Ferroseed.
• Sweepers and cleaners such as Shellder and Mienfoo appreciate Numel's Stealth Rock as it allows them to get KOs easier.

  • Utility set goes here

Checks and Counters
===================
  • Mention Mantyke in the Water-types point, as it takes approximately 0 from anything Numel can do other than Ancient Power
  • Archen deserves a point imo, it's not a bad mon and hard counters Numel.
