Project PU Theorymon

With all the ninjask talk here i wanted to ask: what if ninjask got acrobatics? (add on after Water Shuriken talk)

  • obviously it would make sense for it to learn it, so let's get that just out of the way. (it's a basic flying type move, ninja's tend to be acrobatic)
  • It would, i think, give viability for a sash/sd set and i think the death by priority isn't really relevant anyway since it already dies to it anyways.
  • yes you'll need to have rocks off of your side of the field, you still need it to be under normal circumstances.
  • this also allows ninjask to run speedboost which allows it to be the definitive fastest pokemon in the entire meta also allowing it to outspeed sun and rain teams, that in turn makes gigadrain more viable as a +1 ninjask only needs 120 investment to outspeed the tier meaning the rest can be put into special attack for gigadrain. (not that it makes a real difference but still, acro does more vs ghosts then night slash so what the hell)
  • which all in all i think would make ninjask good late game sweeper in which noting really wants to switch in (besides probo or stunfisk).
  • if tech and water shurikan get into the mix then would also make more variable and all in all i think that if acro also gets added ninjask would be a much more varied mon.
underneath are some quoted calcs
+2 252+ Atk Ninjask Water Shuriken (3 hits) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Golem: 264-324 (87.7 - 107.6%) -- approx. 12.5% chance to OHKO, 87.5 if rocks, guaranteed if after 1 layer of spikes
136 SpA Ninjask Giga Drain vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Golem: 224-264 (74.4 - 87.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ Atk Golem Stone Edge vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Ninjask: 1680-1980 (724.1 - 853.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Choice Band Technician Ninjask Water Shuriken (3 hits) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Golem: 276-336 (91.6 - 111.6%) -- approx. 56.3% chance to OHKO
252 Atk Choice Band Ninjask Water Shuriken (3 hits) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Golem: 192-228 (63.7 - 75.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO (vs golem are just to give perspective)
136 SpA Ninjask Giga Drain vs. 104 HP / 0 SpD Relicanth: 224-264 (61 - 71.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery (vs rock polish but still 2KO's physical def relicanth as well by a minimum of 54,5% per attack)
+2 252+ Atk Ninjask X-Scissor vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Zebstrika: 324-382 (111.3 - 131.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+2 252+ Atk Ninjask Acrobatics (110 BP) vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Bouffalant: 321-378 (81.6 - 96.1%) -- 56.3% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock (likely to be slightly worn down.)
+2 252+ Atk Ninjask Acrobatics (110 BP) vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Eviolite Vullaby: 256-303 (74.6 - 88.3%) -- 93.8% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock
+2 252+ Atk Ninjask Acrobatics (110 BP) vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Stoutland: 334-394 (107.3 - 126.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+2 252+ Atk Ninjask Acrobatics (110 BP) vs. 252 HP / 128 Def Eviolite Roselia: 612-720 (201.3 - 236.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+2 252+ Atk Ninjask Acrobatics (110 BP) vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Eviolite Tangela: 362-428 (108.3 - 128.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO
i made 5 different mons depending on what it might all get (1 for just acro, 1 for acro + water shurikan + 2 more banded sets) so here they are to see for you're self: http://pastebin.com/0dpExGqf

I'd hate to see this thread die--
What if Unfezant got Technician?
I'd love for an excuse to use Unfezant, honestly. Even though a 90-base power STAB is by no means amazing for a Flying-type, I'm sure Unfezant could run something cool since it has no recoil. Although I'm not sure this would put Unfezant up very high (maybe C-ish) It could run something cool that gives it a niche over Dodrio (higher Attack + Technician)

Unfezant @ Choice Band
Ability: Technician
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Pluck
- Return
- Quick Attack
- U-turn

Technician Pluck and Quick Attack allow Unfezant to run a decent CB set with a lot of nice outspeeds against base 92s and below, including Leavanny, Chatot (Specs), Rotom-F (Substitute), Stoutland, and Gourgeist (Normal, Large, or Super). Even though this isn't great, it puts Unfezant on the map at least. I could also think of other set options such as Work Up (underwhelming setup sweeper or a mixed set, perhaps?) or a Roost + 3 attacks set.
What if Ninjask got Acrobatics?
Acrobatics Ninjask would be scary. I'm already thinking a set similar to Driftblim, but better. Using Sub- Liechi would get Ninjask to a high power as well as a threat to be respected. Although this would cause it to die to pretty much anything, with Speed Boosts up and a potential Swords Dance up, this could be a deadly sweeper as long as Electrics and other checks are removed. (I think 68 is the right number of HP for Substitute- please correct me if I'm wrong.)

Ninjask @ Liechi Berry
Ability: Speed Boost
EVs: 68 HP / 252 Atk / 188 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Substitute
- Acrobatics
- X-Scissor
- Swords Dance

Now for a suggestion of my own--
What if Phione got Water Absorb and Slack Off?
Phione's Pokedex entries constantly state how it drifts across the warm seas, as well as HeartGold and SoulSilver specifically using the word "languidly," giving an even more relaxed tone to Phione. Water Absorb seems to fit; when a Phione has drifted across warm water all its life, it would make sense for water to heal rather than harm. Slack Off reflects Phione's carefree and relaxed lifestyle.

So what do we have? In my opinion, giving Phione reliable recovery outside of Rest - Hydration and giving it a niche outside of rain is a huge boost. Although it seems to be directly outclassed by Politoed, I could see Phione running Defense over Special Defense just to give it a slight edge. I was thinking about a bulky special attacker, please tell me what you think! Grass Knot makes it a full on check to CB Floatzel, Heal Bell could work as well.

Phione @ Leftovers
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 252 Def / 252 SpA / 4 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Scald
- Ice Beam
- Grass Knot / Heal Bell
- Slack Off

Also made a fun little compendium of PU Theorymons that were discussed.

What if Torkoal got Slack Off?
This thing has solid bulk in 70 HP/140 Def/70 Sdef and good utility moves in Stealth Rock, Rapid Spin and Will-O-Wisp. The only thing missing is reliable recovery, which is where Slack Off comes in. If Torkoal got Slack Off, then it would become a great pysically defensive pokemon in the PU metagame, being able to check physical attackers like Monferno, Machoke and Ursaring without worrying about getting worn down (excluding SR damage) as it recover from any damage taken. Slack Off would also make Torkoal a decent spinner, as it can't be pursuit trapped like other spinners and can beat them 1v1.

What if Masquerain got Prankster?
So here is an interesting one, Prankster Masquerain. Looking at Masquerain's movepool, it's got some pretty nice moves it can abuse with Prankster (mainly Quiver Dance, Roost, Substitute, and Rain Dance). This ability would actually give a reason for people to use Masquerain over Ninjask, Butterfree and even Dustox. With Prankster Quiver Dance + Roost, Masquerain would be able to set on special attackers like Floatzel, Roselia, Mr Mime, and Altaria then sweep the opposing team with Bug Buzz and Air Slash (also has Ice Beam, Shadow Ball, Energy Ball, and Hydro Pump). Another option for Masq would be to run a stall-breaking sub-toxic-roost set which allows it wear down opposing teams without much diffuculty.

So I have been wondering...
What if Glaceon got Refrigerate and Earth Power?
This change might mean nothing to the meta, but it would give Glaceon a niche as a nice wallbreaker able to get past Steel types without relying on HP Fire, HP Fighting, or HP Ground with the aid of Earth Power. Ice and Ground traditionally covers for each other, creating a nice variety of coverage. Refrigerate would give Glaceon a nice 1.3x boost on Hyper Voice on top of STAB.

252+ SpA Choice Specs Glaceon Earth Power vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Rapidash: 388-458 (143.1 - 169%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ SpA Choice Specs Glaceon Shadow Ball vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Rapidash: 173-204 (63.8 - 75.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Earth Power would deter Rapidash from switching in.

252+ SpA Choice Specs Glaceon Earth Power vs. 104 HP / 0 SpD Relicanth: 460-542 (125.3 - 147.6%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ SpA Choice Specs Glaceon Hidden Power Fighting vs. 104 HP / 0 SpD Chople Berry Relicanth: 153-181 (41.6 - 49.3%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

It would also deter Relicanth from switching in.

252+ SpA Choice Specs Glaceon Earth Power vs. 252 HP / 168+ SpD Probopass: 368-436 (113.5 - 134.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ SpA Choice Specs Glaceon Hidden Power Fighting vs. 252 HP / 168+ SpD Probopass: 248-292 (76.5 - 90.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Probopass has to rely on Sturdy to live at least one Earth Power coming from this thing.

252+ SpA Choice Specs Glaceon Earth Power vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Floatzel: 278-328 (89.3 - 105.4%) -- 37.5% chance to OHKO
252+ SpA Choice Specs Glaceon Shadow Ball vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Floatzel: 247-291 (79.4 - 93.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ SpA Choice Specs Refrigerate Glaceon Hyper Voice vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Floatzel: 270-318 (86.8 - 102.2%) -- 18.8% chance to OHKO

Just my two cents, as it can easily be argued with.

Floatzel can only 2HKO back without Focus Blast btw. This change definitely prevents Floatzel from switching in on Glaceon.

What if Ninjask got acrobatics?
Rip Jumpluff first of all, and Sweep Sets are now a thing for Ninjask. Fastest acrobatic swords dance abuser in the tier.

What if Jumpluff got Adaptability?

Bumping this old thread with an idea I had recently:

What if Wigglytuff got Boomburst?

+2 252+ SpA Life Orb Wigglytuff Boomburst vs. 252 HP / 224+ SpD Eviolite Roselia: 278-329 (91.4 - 108.2%) -- 50% chance to OHKO

Wanted to put into words an idea I had a few months ago.

What if Dodrio got Reckless?

Instant offense destroyer. Dodrio hits ridiculously hard already, near OHKOing most offensive mons that don't resist its STAB, and Reckless would push it over the top as an offense killer.

252 Atk Reckless Dodrio Double-Edge vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Zebstrika: 306-360 (105.1 - 123.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Reckless Dodrio Brave Bird vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Floatzel: 339-399 (109 - 128.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Reckless Dodrio Double-Edge vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Rapidash: 280-330 (103.3 - 121.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

On the flip side, Banded Dodrio breaks everything that doesn't resist it and even 2HKOes some of its counters with a bit or prior damage.

252 Atk Choice Band Reckless Dodrio Brave Bird vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Articuno: 313-369 (97.5 - 114.9%) -- 87.5% chance to OHKO
-1 252 Atk Choice Band Reckless Dodrio Double-Edge vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Arbok: 283-334 (108.4 - 127.9%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252 Atk Choice Band Reckless Dodrio Double-Edge vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Stoutland: 342-403 (109.9 - 129.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO

At this point, you almost don't need coverage, given your STAB does more to Normal/Flying resists than Knock Off does (ignoring Metang.)

-1 252 Atk Choice Band Reckless Dodrio Double-Edge vs. 248 HP / 0+ Def Mawile: 109-129 (35.9 - 42.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

252 Atk Choice Band Reckless Dodrio Brave Bird vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Golem: 124-147 (41.1 - 48.8%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
252 Atk Choice Band Dodrio Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Golem: 113-133 (37.5 - 44.1%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

252 Atk Choice Band Reckless Dodrio Double-Edge vs. 248 HP / 8 Def Avalugg: 183-216 (46.5 - 54.9%) -- 10.5% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

Of course, this change would probably cement Dodrio into NU if not RU, given it's speed and power.

Take Azelfie

More flags more fun
To be fair NU might not take it since Swellow has a really high speed tier important to the meta making Dodrio almost redundant although it would have its niches like better Normal STAB.

What if Murkrow got Parting Shot?

Murkrow could act as a good offensive pivot to teams that have a hard time responding to certain threats. It provides Memento type of support for stuff like NP monkeys or SD Fermi. Prankster will let it pull off Parting Almost almost always but with all of the Lofe Orb and possible Stealth Rock recoil is would get worn down extremely fast.

Murkrow seems very much nice. Would be a great asset to teams.

What if Lopunny was Normal/Fighting like its Mega?

It does look a bit too tame to be a fighting-type, but even so it finally gets a niche over its Normal-type bretheren. Could be a viable Fighting-type attacker, which the tier has desperately needed since Machoke left. Has a useful ability as well in Limber.

What if Jumpluff got Adaptability?
Since one of the standard Jumpluff sets sees it going without any kind of boosting item (in order to use Acrobatics), this would be a great offensive boon, lending it extra power it can't access without losing useful Flying STAB. I can see having Adaptability Seed Bomb and Acrobatics giving Jumpluff a more solid niche.

What if Wigglytuff got Boomburst?
What I like about this possibility is that it makes sense flavor-wise, since Jigglypuff and Wigglytuff have always been associated with music and sound. Unfortunately, I can't see even having a 140 BP STAB move helping Wigglytuff become more viable, as Chatot's existence would provide it too much competition as a Boomburst user. Chatot has higher SpA and much higher speed, meaning it could pull of a Specs or Scarf set much better. Wigglytuff does have slightly better bulk, but not much better, as its high HP is betrayed by abysmal defensive stats.

I can't deny that Wigglytuff's odd characteristics remain interesting-looking when you ignore stats, though. This theoretical Wigglytuff would have Stealth Rock and Competitive, and would be able to use a high-powered STAB to try and keep those rocks on the field in the face of Spinners like Avalugg or Cryogonal. Possible niche as a lead? Though it wouldn't have such a great match-up against other lead Rock setters, since some will be Rock-type and thus resist Boomburst, mitigating its tremendous power.

What if Dodrio got Reckless?
This would definitely make Dodrio dangerous to an offense team without a faster Mon or a Scarfer. What would most likely hold Dodrio back from rising to a higher tier, though, is its frailty. Reckless would just increase the chip damage it takes over time, with recoil damage from Brave Bird increasing.

What if Murkrow got Parting Shot?
Certainly interesting, especially in combination with Prankster. If a team can keep Rocks off the field, Murkrow could become part of an interesting VoltTurnShot core or something. I'd say the main niche would definitely develop in combining Parting Shot with Prankster so Murkrow takes less damage and can bypass non-Prankster Taunt.

While its lack of bulk means Lopunny isn't about to serve the same role as Machoke did, it does have some unique traits to bring to the table. It's faster than Monferno and only has slightly lower attack, so it could hit about as hard, though its best Fighting STAB option is the imperfectly accurate High Jump Kick. However, it does lack the defense drops that Monferno's Close Combat has. Also, while Lopunny doesn't have Mach Punch, it does have Quick Attack (though it lacks super-effective potential).

Notably, Lopunny can't use U-Turn the way Monferno can. Lopunny's main advantage lies in utility, as it has access to Switcheroo and Healing Wish. A Scarf set could possible use Switcheroo to gain a leg up on fast Mons and cripple walls, all while using STAB High Jump Kicks.

What if Seadra had Swift Swim and Thunder?

Okay right off the bat this seems crazy but if you think about it, these make perfect sense. Horsea and Kingdra both have swift swim as their main abilities meanwhile Seadra got cheated out of even basic viability with Poison Point, so why it should have Swift Swim is kind of obvious. Thunder on the other hand is kind of a stretch. I feel my justifications are just that, justified. Seadra is what I like to call a "cannon" mon, one of those mons that gets a weird array of moves just because it has a cannon on its body, for examples see Seadra with flash cannon, Magmortar with Thunderbolt, and Octillery for almost its entire moveset. Additionally, it's not unheard of for water types to get electric moves, including Thunderbolt or in this case Thunder (See Gyarados and Lapras). So, it's not really a stretch for Seadra (or really the entire Horsea line) to get Thunder in my honest opinion.

This would cause Seadra to have a huge boost in viability, specifically on rain teams, as Seadra's Water, Ice, and Electric coverage is great for hitting the majority of the tier. Its great speed under rain, and good bulk with eviolite would allow it to be one of the best rain abusers in the tier (in my opinion at least). The main things holding it back would be its bulk and power compared to Golduck, as Golduck's bulk is natural (not coming from Eviolite) and it's not forced to hold an item to maintain it, allowing for Life Orb to be a valid option for said duck. However, Seadra's coverage would allow it to rival Golduck as one of the best special rain abusers in the tier, and allow it to be a great self setting rain cleaner.

What if Probopass got Levitate?

It makes sense flavour wise since it, you know, hovers. It would lose one of its X4 weaknesses (arguably it's most prominent one), and it could now completely wall most Ground-types. Sort of like a poor man's Bronzong.

Set

Probopass @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 248 HP / 176 SpD / 84 Spe
Calm Nature
- Stealth Rock
- Power Gem
- Toxic / Thunder Wave
- Earth Power / Volt Switch

What if Rotom-S got Hurricane?

Rotom-S really got shafted in the whole signature move department. Hurricane would provide a huge power increase over Air Slash, and has an added confusion chance. Rotom-S could also run a rain support set, as it would have 2 STABs with perfect accuracy in Rain.

Rotom-S @ Damp Rock
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 SpA
Modest Nature
- Rain Dance
- Hurricane
- Thunder
- Volt Switch

What if Bastiodon was a pure steel type?

Goodbye terrible typing. It also doesn't look very rockish at all.

What if Rapidash got Horn Leech?

It gets horn attack, mega horn, drill run, might as well add Horn Leech, and it also naturally gains grass moves anyway.

Other TM's
What if Seadra had Swift Swim and Thunder?

golduck definitely loses out a bit in this since Seadra has the same typing but a better coverage move, bulk, and is just as strong.

Seadra suddenly sees use and Golduck would drop. The ideal set would probably be either Eviolite/LO with Thunder/Hydro Pump/Ice Beam/Rain Dance with swift swim.

Even as a pure steel type, Bastiodon still suffers from zero offense. Horn Leech would be fun on Rapidash giving it some healing as well as a non Wild Charge attack on waters.

here's an interesting one for older players to speculate about;

What if Exeggutor DIDN'T get Chlorophyll? Would it still be too broken for PU, or would it be unbanned?

edit: assume it gets a useless ability like Leaf Guard instead

the main sets that actually got it banned were Harvest sets, Chlorophyll while helping out Sun teams had little effect overall in it's banning

oh I'm bad, gg

here I'll make this post not nothing by bringing up a few other things:

What if Fearow got Focus Energy and Brave Bird?
This sounds like a meme but a set with Sniper, Focus Energy and Scope Lens could give it a slight niche over Dodrio.
Like so:
252 Atk Sniper Fearow Drill Run vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Mawile on a critical hit: 246-291 (80.9 - 95.7%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Sniper Fearow Brave Bird vs. 248 HP / 252+ Def Pelipper on a critical hit: 247-292 (76.4 - 90.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252 Atk Sniper Fearow Drill Run vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Golem on a critical hit: 246-291 (67.7 - 80.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

While it sounds interesting and very powerful, Fearow's unfortunately probably too frail to spend a turn setting up, as it risks being hit with an attack on the turn.

I agree but similar to Dodrio, Fearow is able to force some switches, which would be a decent way of getting a turn to set up. Perhaps pair it with like subpass leafeon? idk.

I wasn't saying it would be good, but it would be better :3

What if Ampharos got Trick Room?
It would have a really cool niche on Trick Room teams with a combination of Volt Switch + Trick Room. It will make teams preserve there Stunfisk or other Electric check in an attempt to stop momentum and waste turns. Teams w/o an electric immunity though will have a pretty rough time since normal Ampbaros is pretty bulky and could at least set upon most neutral hits.

Okay, so since OU Theorymon is talking about Armaldo, I'd want to give my PU spin on it.

What if Armaldo got Water Absorb?

This change would easily deal with one of Armaldo's problems, Water types, and serves to check threats such as Floatzel and Simipour.

Sticking with Armaldo

What if Armaldo got Skill Link and Pin Missile?

Twin 125 base power STABs in Rock Blast and Pin Missile, with Earthquake rounding out its coverage, would make Armaldo a very potent physical attacker. It could even rectify its Speed with Rock Polish, which lets it outrun Zebstrika at +2 with an Adamant nature.

What if Swanna got No Guard and Hydro Pump?

As Mega Pidgeot taught us, with accuracy out of the equation Hurricane is extremely spammable. This would make Swanna the best offensive Defogger in the tier, as having twin 110 base power STABs that won't miss makes up for its average special attack. I don't think it would be broken though, as it still can't break through most Special walls.

What if Golem got Head Smash?

It could learn the move through breeding with Aegislash. With Rock Head it could negate the recoil, and with a high base 120 Attack, it would hit extremely hard. It would also have STAB Earthquake for extra coverage. However, it's still very slow and OHKOed by most Grass / Water type moves. It could also run the move in place of Explosion on its suicide lead set, as it would still kill Golem but would have better typing than Explosion.

Wasn't one of the reasons Mega Pidgeot was banned from UU was because of confusion hax with Hurricane? I assume that No Guard Swanna would be the same thing in that regard. (People said that No Guard + Dynamicpunch was broken with Machoke; and No Guard Hurricane is basically a worse version of that in terms of how it annoys the opponent)

Both Armaldo suggestions are really good and could help the poor thing in the long run. Water Absorb would be better on more tankier sets, while Skill Link would give it an offensive niche. Like low-rent Mega Heracross.

Head Smash Golem would be interesting. Whats notable is that it gets Sucker Punch as priority. (I'm not sure if Relicanth even gets Aqua Jet and if so if it runs it on Rock Head sets)

I'm not sure if this type of submission would be allowed or not, but I still want thoughts on it:

What if Sandslash, Trevenant, and Cradily were PU?:

I remember there being a thread that was basically a "What if X got banned or Y dropped to PU." And that thread's really fucking old right now. But back on topic:

Sandslash would offer a nice spinner, as unlike all of our current spinners it isn't weak to the hazards its supposed to remove, and unlike Wartortle it can actually do damage. Could also pair nicely with Sand Rush Stoutland, as Slash takes care of stuff like Probopass without Stoutland having to lower its stats in the process.

Trevenant would be pretty middling honestly, at least in terms of defensive capabilities. Its like if someone mishmashed Exeggutor and Gourgeist and shat out an inferior version of both of them. Offensively, though, is where things get interesting. Its a physical attacking Ghost-type, WITH ACTUALLY GOOD STAB MOVES. Now I won't say its amazing or anything, but it gets good coverage and physical Giga Drain AKA Horn Leech do make it interesting to say the least.

Cradily would be pretty mediocre IMO. It sucks as a Water check because its a momentum suck and is very much vulnerable to coverage moves like Ice Beam, Focus Blast etc. Though it has a few boons, like reliable recovery and Stealth Rock, but I wouldn't see it getting any use from major players anytime soon. Though perhaps I'm being too harsh to it, IDK.

These three Pokemon are currently the worst things still NU by usage. (I guess you could lump in Electivire and Manectric if you want to, but I don't want to go overboard with this so yeah)
