Shaymin-Sky [QC 0/3]

[OVERVIEW]

  • Shaymin's combination of Serene Grace and Air Slash, as well as its excellent Speed and Special Attack stats make it a force to be reckoned with in Ubers.
  • It can also check bulky Water- and Ground-types such as Arceus-Water, Arceus-Ground, and Primal Kyogre, and it can support its teammates through Healing Wish.
  • Shaymin's Flying-type grants it immunity to Ground-type moves and more importantly to Spikes, Toxic Spikes, and Sticky Web, which can be troublesome for other offensive Pokemon.
  • Sadly, Shaymin is weak to the most common hazard of all: Stealth Rock, and this damage can add up quickly, especially if Shaymin is utilizing Life Orb.
  • Its reliance on luck and its frailty also can be quite troublesome.

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

  • Air Slash is the perfect move for Shaymin, being great Flying-type STAB and having an astounding 60% chance to flinch with Serene Grace.
  • Seed Flare is Shaymin's best STAB Grass-type move, as it has a high chance to harshly drop Special Defense and breaks through teams with heavy damage.
  • Earth Power lets Shaymin deal a lot of damage to Steel-types, namely Magearna, Dialga, Solgaleo, and Klefki.
  • Healing Wish gives Shaymin some utility by letting it heal one of its teammates. This is particularly useful on offensive teams for healing up sweepers.
  • Hidden Power Rock can be used instead of Earth Power or Healing Wish to let Shaymin take care of Fire- and Flying-types, namely Ho-Oh.

Set Details
========

  • A Life Orb as well as 252 Special Attack EVs maximize Shaymin's Special Attack and allow it to tear holes through teams
  • Additionally, 252 Speed EVs and a Timid nature allow Shaymin to outspeed many threats, key ones include all Arceus formes, Ho-Oh, and Mega Lucario.
  • The final 4 HP EVs are put into Defense instead of HP to help Shaymin take minimum Stealth Rock damage, and still provide it will a bit more bulk.

Usage Tips
========

  • Avoid switching Shaymin into direct attacks, as it is quite frail.
  • Instead, it is best to switch it in on predicted Ground-type attacks, or via a U-Turn or Volt Switch user.
  • Avoid using Air Slash against threats it doesn't OHKO or at least 2HKO, as a 60% to flinch isn't very reliable.
  • Shaymin is excellent at forcing out Special Defensive tanks, as Seed Flare's 80% chance to harshly drop in combination with Serene Grace can tear through them quite easily.
  • If Shaymin has outlived its usefulness, it is recommended to use Healing Wish to fully restore a teammates health and status conditions. This treatment should usually go to a weakened sweeper.
  • If brought in against a Pokemon Shaymin forces out, Seed Flare is a wonderful option to greatly weaken any Pokemon that switches in.

Team Options
========

  • Entry hazard support on both sides lets Shaymin keep its HP up while also being able to more easily break through walls.
  • As mentioned above, U-Turn and Volt Switch can help Shaymin switch in without taking damage from attacks.
  • Most Fire-types pair well with Shaymin, as they can check Steel-types for Shaymin, while Shaymin can take care of Water-types.
  • Ground-types can also be quite good partners for Shaymin, as they also check Steel-types, as well as checking Fire- and Rock-types, while Shaymin checks Grass- and Water-types.
  • Pursuit trappers can help Shaymin by removing Mega Gengar.
  • Ghost-types can absorb Extreme Speed from Extreme Killer Arceus, a Pokemon that gives Shaymin much trouble.

[SET]
name: Choice Scarf
move 1: Air Slash
move 2: Seed Flare
move 3: Hidden Power Ice
move 4: Healing Wish
item: Choice Scarf
ability: Serene Grace
nature: Timid
evs: 4 SpD / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

  • Air Slash is Shaymin's main Flying-type STAB move, and its 60% chance to flinch in combination with Choice Scarf can tear through even bulky opponents.
  • Seed Flare is Shaymin's powerful Grass-type STAB move with the added bonus of having a high chance to drop Special Defense.
  • Hidden Power Ice lets Shaymin deal heavy damage to Mega Salamence and other Flying-types.
  • Hidden Power Rock can be used instead of Hidden Power Ice to hit Ho-Oh hard, but Hidden Power Ice has more coverage.
  • Healing Wish provides Shaymin with a great support move that allows it to sacrifice itself to fully heal a teammate.

Set Details
========

  • 252 Speed EVs, a Timid nature, as well as a Choice Scarf let Shaymin outspeed every threat in Ubers bar +2 Xerneas.
  • Shaymin's Special Attack EVs are also maximized to help it deal the most damage possible.

Usage Tips
========

  • It isn't a great idea to mindlessly spam Air Slash against your opponent, moreover try predicting which Pokemon it would be used best against.
  • If Shaymin is intended to be a wallbreaker, then using a Choice Scarf isn't recommended, as Shaymin needs to be able to switch moves and needs the extra attack power from Life Orb.
  • Instead, Shaymin's excellent Speed should be used to make it a revenge killer.
  • Healing Wish should be used late game, and only when you are completely okay with KOing your Shaymin.
  • Predicting what Pokemon will switch in is very important when using a Choice Scarf, so you should use coverage on predicted switch often.

Team Options
========

  • Fire- and Ground-types, such as Ho-Oh and Primal Groudon, have excellent defensive synergy with Shaymin, and as such make great partners.
  • Ghost-types are immune to Extreme Speed, which Shaymin doesn't enjoy.
  • Hazard removal is very important to keep Shaymin's health near full, and as such Defog utilizing Arceus formes, Cloyster, Lugia, and Giratina-O make great teammates.
  • On the opposite side, hazard setters such as Dialga, Primal Groudon and Ferrothron an help Shaymin clean up easier.
  • Mega Gengar can trap and eliminate Steel-types for Shaymin.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

  • Substitute + Leech Seed and Leftovers could be a legitimate set to annoy more defensive teams, but it must give up power and coverage to make this set work.
  • Hidden Power Fire can hit Steel-types, mainly Ferrothorn, Genesect, and Mega Scizor, quite hard, but these Pokemon are less common than the threats hit by Shaymin's other coverage options.
  • Choice Specs could be used to give Shaymin even more fire power, but its main problem lies in forcing Shaymin into a singular move without the massive Speed boost provided by Choice Scarf.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Ho-Oh**: Ho-Oh's high Special Defense and 4x resistance to Seed Flare make it a great counter to Shaymin, although it is KOed by Hidden Power Rock after Stealth Rock.

**Mega Gengar**: Mega Gengar can easily trap and eliminate Shaymin.

**Lugia**: Lugia's incredible bulk and resistance to Seed Flare make it quite a good counter to Shaymin, and it carrying many moves that are super-effective against Shaymin, namely Ice Beam and Aeroblast, make it even harder to defeat.

**Steel-types**: Steel-types, namely Magearna, Celesteela, Ferrothorn and Bronzong are quite troublesome to Shaymin, as they resist all of its STAB and coverage options bar Earth Power. The latter two can easily absorb damage from any Shaymin set and easily set up hazards on it or deal heavy damage with Gyro Ball.

**Revenge Killers**: Faster revenge killers, such as Pheromosa, Mewtwo, and Deoxys-A, can easily take care of Shaymin, as Shaymin has relatively low defenses and it slowly whittles itself down with Life Orb anyways.

**Status**: Toxic and paralysis are extremely troublesome to Shaymin, as they slowly KO Shaymin or dramatically reduce its Speed respectively.

**Stealth Rock**: Every time Shaymin switches into Stealth Rock it loses around one fourth of its HP, and along with Life Orb slowly taking its health away Shaymin is KOed a lot quicker. Additionally, by setting up Stealth Rock, Dialga, Ferrothorn, and Primal Groudon are also considered checks to Shaymin.

Where's the Marshadow or Diancie mentions at? Can't be all "3 months cmon" when its not been updated in 4 in any way for the metagame. Step it up before dropping sass.

Sub + Leech Seed / Scarf should be the two sets. Sub + Leech Seed is annoying to all teams in some way, while Scarf specializes in the offense matchup. Life Orb + Z-Growth should go to OO.

I'll take a more in depth look once this is actually fit for the current metagame.

So after looking into it and playing a few games, I realized that the Ubers meta has shifted too much for me to be able to properly write this. Sorry if this sounds like horseshit since I just bumped it but I just started up with my marching band and I don't have enough time to test enough, write this, and do everything else I do on this site. Hope I can write smth in the future if I'm able to test enough!

aite sure - Nayrz
