Battle Spot Toxapex (Singles)

[OVERVIEW]

* Toxapex boasts amazing defensive stats alongside a Poison / Water typing, allowing it to easily take hits from many metagame threats such as Blaziken, Mimikyu, and Cloyster. However, it is also weak to other metagame threats including Garchomp, Tapu Lele, and Tapu Koko. Being weak to Ground-type attacks is a weakness that a lot of physical attackers can exploit.

* Access to reliable recovery in Recover and Z-Haze as well as the ability Regenerator allows Toxapex to have a lot of favorable one-on-one matchups while also freely pivoting to regain health.

* Toxapex is extremely passive. As a result, it struggles to fit on any playstyle outside of stall, but it can be paired with certain offensive Pokemon that offer good synergy such as Tapu Bulu.

[SET]
name: Physically Defensive
move 1: Recover
move 2: Scald
move 3: Haze
move 4: Toxic / Toxic Spikes
item: Black Sludge / Icium Z
ability: Regenerator
nature: Bold
evs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

* Recover provides Toxapex with longevity and allows it to stall out other Pokemon until they are burned via Scald or badly poisoned via Toxic.

* Scald is used for its burn utility and discourages threats such as Garchomp, Mega Metagross, and Celesteela from switching in at the risk of a burn.

* Haze prevents Pokemon from setting up while trying to take advantage of how passive Toxapex is. It can also freely switch in and use Haze against Mimikyu, Cloyster, and Flame Charge Mega Charizard Y.

* Toxic allows Toxapex to pressure anything that can't 2HKO it, as Toxapex can simply use Recover after each hit. Toxic Spikes works nicely alongside Haze for shutting down common Baton Pass chains, as Toxic Spikes can poison through Substitute, while nothing shuts down Haze.

Set Details
========

* Black Sludge provides Toxapex with passive recovery while also freeing up Leftovers for use on another Pokemon. Rocky Helmet is an option to chip away at physical attackers.

* 252 HP and 252 Defense EVs with a Bold nature make Toxapex as physically bulky as possible.

Usage Tips
========

* Toxapex should be used as a physically defensive pivot, taking advantage of how freely it can switch in against targets that cannot 2HKO it.

* Trying to get Toxic Spikes down as quickly as possible is important to put a timer on Baton Pass teams and bulkier Pokemon such as Porygon2.

* Pivot Toxapex into support Pokemon so Toxapex can take advantage of Regenerator, and use Recover accordingly to keep Toxapex out of KO range.

Team Options
========

* Stall partners that can deal with offensive Electric-, Psychic-, and Ground-type Pokemon such as Chansey, Gliscor, Celesteela, and Skarmory are greatly appreciated to patch up Toxapex's weaknesses.

* Tapu Bulu is a fantastic partner, providing Grassy Terrain to give Toxapex some more passive recovery while also reducing the damage of Earthquake. Toxapex comfortably covers all of Tapu Bulu's weaknesses, while Tapu Bulu does the same for Toxapex.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

* Infestation can be used as a means to trap and eliminate bulkier Pokemon with the combination of Recover and Toxic but is costly, as you're forced to replace either Scald, which then allows Ground-types to freely switch in, or Haze, which then makes Toxapex extreme setup fodder.

* Baneful Bunker lets Toxapex gain extra Black Sludge recovery, scout Choice-item users, play around Z-Moves, and stall out the effects of Terrains.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Tapu Fini**: Tapu Fini is an incredibly huge threat to Toxapex. Taunt completely shuts it down, and Misty Terrain makes Toxapex almost complete deadweight by making it unable to spread status conditions. When Toxapex is afflicted with Taunt, Tapu Fini can freely set up with Calm Mind or chip away at it with Nature's Madness.

**Ground-types**: When given a free opportunity to switch in, offensive Ground-types such as Garchomp, Landorus-T, Mamoswine, and Excadrill can all threaten Toxapex with a 2HKO and force it out, since Toxapex can't Recover back the damage that Earthquake deals to it.

**Electric-types**: Electric-types such as Tapu Koko, Thundurus-T, Choice Specs Rotom-W, and Choice Specs Rotom-H can freely switch in against Toxapex and threaten to OHKO it.

**Psychic-types**: Tapu Lele gets a clean OHKO with Psychic, while Mega Metagross can check Toxapex and 2HKO it with Zen Headbutt.

**Taunt Users**: Pokemon that run Taunt such as Mega Gyarados, Tapu Fini, and Mega Gengar can completely shut down Toxapex, forcing it to continuously spam Scald and become setup fodder for specially based setup sweepers.

**Substitute Users**: Given how weak Toxapex's Scald is, breaking a Substitute often takes two to three hits, which often force out Toxapex as a result of being unable to status. Mega Gyarados is a prime example.[/hide]

[OVERVIEW]

* Toxapex boasts amazing defensive statistics alongside Poison / Water-typing, allowing it to easily take hits from many metagame threats and making it a really solid option for stall teams. If there's a good way to mention Blaziken here, do so. It's such a valuable tool on stall as a Blaziken answer.

* Access to reliably recovery as well as the ability Regenerator allows Toxapex to have a lot of favourable 1v1 matchups while also freely pivoting to regain health.

* Toxapex's typing can be a hindrance, boasting a rather crippling Ground / Electric / Psychic-type weakness.

* Toxapex is extremely passive. As a result, It struggles to fit on any playstyle outside of stall.

[SET]
name: Physically Defensive Wall

move 2: Scald
move 3: Haze
move 4: Toxic / Baneful Bunker / Toxic Spikes

evs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Spd

Baneful Bunker lets you get extra Black Sludge, a few cheeky poisons, scout choice users, stall terrain and play around z-moves.
TSpikes are pretty interesting, because they poison before Misty Surge activates they can be a great answer to Tapu Fini.
Both these options see significant usage; with stall you don't need Toxic on everything, since at least 4 other mons probably have it.

Full SpDef Tox is something I see from time to time, certainly not worth it's own set, but maybe a mention as an alt-build somewhere. See what other QCers think.

* Scald is used for its burn utility and prevents Ground-type threats such as Garchomp and Landorus-Therian from switching in at the risk of a burn.

* Haze prevents Pokemon setting up while trying to take advantage of how passive Toxapex is. It can also freely switch in and Haze against Volcarona that don't carry Hidden Power Ground and Flame Charge Mega-Charizard-Y.
Volcarona also threatens with Psychic (~22%) and z-Hurricane (~18%), Tox is kinda iffy against it. The chance of Volc having just one of these options on its move set is too high for comfort. Perhaps mention Cloyster or Mimikyu instead.

* Toxic allows Toxapex to pressure anything that can't get a 2HKO, as Toxapex can simply Recover after each hit.

Set Details

* Black Sludge provides Toxapex with passive recovery while also freeing up leftovers to be used on another Pokemon. Rocky Helmet remains an option to chip physical attackers.

Other Options
=============

* Toxic Spikes remains as an option over Toxic, however has poor synergy with Scald and can't poison Pokemon that avoid contact with the field such as Flying-type and Levitate Pokemon.

* Infestation can be used as a means to trap and eliminate bulkier Pokemon with the combo of Recover and Toxic, but is costly as your're forced to replace either Scald which then allows Ground-types to freely switch in, or Haze which then makes Toxapex extreme setup fodder.
I may be back with thoughts on this later, though I don't think dropping one of Haze or Scald is as big of a deal as presented.
Checks and Counters
===================

**Tapu Fini**: Tapu Fini is an incredibly huge threat to Toxapex. Taunt completely shuts it down, and Misty Terrain makes Toxapex almost complete dead-weight, not being able to status. When taunted, Tapu Fini can freely setup with Calm Mind or chip away with Nature's Madness.

**Ground-types**: Given the switch, offensive Ground-types such as Garchomp, Landorus-Therian, Mamoswine and Excadrill can all threaten Toxapex with a 2HKO and therefor force it out, since Toxapex can't recover back the damage which Earthquake deals to it.

**Electric-types**: Electric-types can freely switch in against Toxapex and threaten to OHKO such as Tapu Koko, Thundurus-Therian, Choice Specs Rotom-Wash and Choice Specs Rotom-Heat.

**Psychic-types**: Tapu Lele gets a clean OHKO with Psychic, whilst Mega-Metagross can check Toxapex and 2HKO with Zen-Headbutt.

**Taunt users**: Anything that runs taunt can completely shut down Toxapex, forcing it to continuously spam Scald and become setup fodder for special based setup sweepers. Tapu Fini can taunt and whittle down Toxapex with Nature's Madness, while Perish Trap Mega-Gengar sets can Taunt Toxapex and Disable its scald, forcing it to struggle.

**Substitute users**: Given how weak Toxapex's Scald is, breaking a substitute often takes 2-3 hits and nullifies Toxapex's ability to status.
There we go, another reason for TSpikes. Can hit stuff that wants to sub or taunt, though you'll never know if they did want to sub since they won't use it after being poisoned.
A good and simple one.

Greatly appreciated Jhon, added in all those changes except for;
  • Full spd set (needs more QC opinions)
  • Changing the emphasise on dropping scald / toxic for Infestation (also probably needs more QC opinions)
  • The stuff about Blaziken, because I'm not really sure where to put it

OVERVIEW
Not sure if this section is worded in the most optimal way. Alternatively you can say that its typing is both a blessing and a curse, gaining useful resistances against some of the most potent attackers in the meta, like Blaziken, Mimikyu, and Cloyster. While at the same time, being weak to the common foes that is Lele, Koko and Garchomp. (Something along these lines).

SET COMMENTS
Landorus-T should not be listed as a target under Scald, at least when switching in. It gets hit super effectively and it would be silly for Lando to take a big chunk and risk in getting burnt. Something that’s immune to poison/threaten to KO or annoy Toxapex would be more appropriate here, such as Metagross, Ferrothorn or Celesteela.
Haze and/or a combination of Haze + T-Spikes shuts down BP chains hard because Toxic Spikes can poison stuff through sub and nothing blocks Haze. While Haze also has an insanely high amount of PP so you can never win in the PP war vs CM/SD users.
"Toxic Spikes are good for pressuring and reducing longevity of opposing Taunt / Substitute users which Toxapex can struggle to deal with." This sentence is weird. I think you meant on the switch only because Taunt shuts down every move except Scald?

Usage Tips
You need to expand this section more. Example: Try to get down a layer of T-Spikes early vs a BP team because it puts them on a timer on them while you spam Haze + Recover.
Ask yourself these questions might help: 1. When should I bench Toxapex? 2. Does my team automatically lose to BP or set up sweepers? 3. How to play around threats?

Team Options
This section is too brief also. What are some most common team mate for it? Bulu is a no brainer, terrain + near perfect synergy in typing. Mega Salamence and Ferrothorn both appreciate Mega Mawile crippled/removed, etc.

Other Options
Don't need T-Spikes here because its slashed in the set.

Checks and Counters
Gyarados can go either in the Taunt or Sub category.

Once you're done, consider it a 2/3, I most likely won't get another chance to at it in the coming days due to exams.

I don't have that much to add, just a few nitpicks.

-I'd mention the Ground weak in overview, since I feel that's a big weakness a lot of physical attackers are able to exploit.

- since you mention Skarmory as a teammate, might as well mention Celesteela as well since some semi stall teams prefer that.

Our analyses are often just two checks instead of three but instead of waiting for Theorymon to stamp this I'll just check it as well and stamp it myself. Comments in bold and strikeouts are bits you can just remove, once you get this taken care of go ahead and get this GP checked.

[OVERVIEW]

* Toxapex boasts amazing defensive statistics This is more GP stuff but I'd just say "stats." alongside Poison / Water-typing, allowing it to easily take hits from many metagame threats such as Blaziken, Mimikyu, and Cloyster. (add period) however is also weak to other metagame threats including Garchomp, Tapu Lele and Tapu Koko. Being Ground-type weak however is a weakness which a lot of physical attackers can exploit. I'd make everything after the period just one sentence since this seems to be missing a few words, GP will fix that up better later but this puts a little less work on them.

* Access to reliably recovery as well as the ability Regenerator allows Toxapex to have a lot of favourable 1v1 matchups while also freely pivoting to regain health. I would also mention Haze here since this is super useful for turning a lot of 1v1 matchups in its favor as well.

* Toxapex is extremely passive. As a result, It struggles to fit on any playstyle outside of stall. While this is true, I'd reword this to sound less like Toxapex is only used on stall since Toxapex + Tapu Bulu works on non stall teams.

Moves
========

* Recover provides Toxapex with longevity and allows it to stall out other Pokemon until they are burnt via Scald or badly poisoned via Toxic.

* Scald is used for its burn utility and prevents threats such as Garchomp, Metagross and Celesteela from switching in at the risk of a burn. Scald doesn't really prevent them from switching in, it more so discourages and punishes them.

* Haze prevents Pokemon setting up while trying to take advantage of how passive Toxapex is. It can also freely switch in and Haze against Mimikyu, Cloyster, and Flame Charge Mega-Charizard-Y. I don't think Zard Y is the best example here, maybe make this Mega Blaziken.

* Toxic allows Toxapex to pressure anything that can't get a 2HKO, as Toxapex can simply Recover after each hit. Baneful Bunker lets you get extra Black Sludge recovery,cout choice users (typo), stall terrain, play around z-moves and stall out the effects of terrains. Toxic Spikes works nicely alongside Haze, shutting down common Baton Pass chains as Toxic Spikes can poison through Substitute, while nothing shuts down Haze. I know Jhon suggested them but I'm honestly not entirely convinced these are main set worthy. At least Baneful Bunker, I don't think it's the kind of move we should be recommended on a main set.

Set Details
========

* Black Sludge provides Toxapex with passive recovery while also freeing up leftovers to be used on another Pokemon. Rocky Helmet remains an option to chip physical attackers.

* 252 HP / 252 Def with a Bold nature makes Toxapex as physically bulky as possible.

Mention Regenerator here, also maybe briefly mention specially defensive is an option but it's usually inferior to physically defensive.

Usage Tips
========

* Toxapex should be used as a physically defensive pivot, abusing how freely you can switch it in against targets that cannot get a 2HKO.

* Trying to get Toxic Spikes down as quickly as possible is important to put a timer on baton pass teams and bulkier Pokemon such as Porygon2.

Tapu Fini can taunt and whittle down Toxapex with Nature's Madness, while Perish Trap Mega-Gengar sets can Taunt Toxapex and Disable its scald, forcing it to struggle. You already mentioned Fini before so you don't need to include it again here. I'm unsure if you'll need to remove it though so you can leave it for when GP gets to it.

**Substitute users**: Given how weak Toxapex's Scald is, breaking a substitute often takes 2-3 hits and nullifies Toxapex's ability to status. Mega-Gyarados is a prime example.
