Victim Of The Week [VoTW #27 - Zygarde / Zygarde-Complete]

Status
Not open for further replies.
Covering both Zards in one slot is really hard, but I think (besides Tyranitar ofc) out of the offensive answers I like TFA's Nihilego the best, since it outspeeds +1 Zard, deals with both variants and is a cool Pokemon in general. Sadly all defensive answers have problems with either the other mega variant or just aren't good enough as a check IMO to warrant their use over an offensive revenge killer here.

I'm voting for psychobuzz's Hippowdon because Hippo is a very good mon in general and you can also modify the set to check CharY too or you can also run Ice Fang to beat a lot of Charizard's common partners. Furthermore you can gain good advantage vs Xard with Yawn and by that you get chipdamage on other Pokemon, scout for the other Pokemon and maybe put a Pokemon to sleep which allows your sweeper to setup or sth else.

Voting for fischgrat's Tyranitar

Tyranitar is such a cool mon that can fit on a lot of teams, and also has a nice moveset to help it check a lot of stuff in the meta. You can also pair it with Excadrill to sweep after it's done its job.

This is quite an interesting vote, as some are voting for the best check, counter, or mon that can take on both formes.

Out of the three scarfers available as a check, my vote goes to Vif-Argent's Garchomp. Nihilego's STAB combo is walled by Ground and Steel-types. Not many Pokmeon can switch into this beast, aside from the rare Togekiss maybe, but Garchomp will certainly hit any pokemon hard when it's on the field, and of course, it checks XZard very well.

Voting for Jhon's Mega Altaria because it beats the shit of both Zard forms defensively

Going from the perspective of only checking Zard X here and not Y, my vote will go to Fishcgrat's Tyranitar. Amazing at removing Zard X with Foul Play and Rock Tomb and very customizable allowing for it to see use on a lot of teams. Just a nice defensive answer to it in general, not really much I can say here.

Vif-Argent's Garchomp
Unsurprising vote given it was my intended submission. Scarf Chomp is just the perfect check to so many boosting mons sitting around that speed tier, Charizard chiefly among them.

TFA's Nihilego

It's such an anti meta thing.

Suggestion : I want to submit an idea for this thread (and for the same threads in others tiers). It would be good to give in OP the second (and maybe third) winner of each week. A threat doesn't have only one check and it could help new players in teambuilding or any player that want to cover a specific weakness. You could put it in a new "Hide" to let the Hall of Fame as its own purpose.

This isn't a resource thread, it's meant to be a competition for fun. adding runners up will just clutter the archive and help reach the post-character limit three times faster as well.

edit: might as well vote as well.

When we did Zard X + Y back in ORAS VotW I made up a DDD (defensive Dragon Dance) Mega Tyranitar set specifically to beat them, which (controversially) won that week. Now I know we're only doing Xard this week, but like many others I believe it's best to be prepared for both megas. I thought about voting for Ttar for this one, but it's really Ttar (or Hippo) + Excadrill that beats the Zards, not Ttar. Especially when this Ttar set gets 2HKOed by Outrage and doesn't OHKO back so you lose the 1v1. Because of that I'm going to vote for ThickFatAzumarill's Nihilego. Scarf Garchomp is beastly too, but getting a Beast Boost off Xard can snowball and hurt revenge killers.

Congratulations to ThickFatAzumarill for winning VoTW 15 (Mega-Charizard X) with your submission of Nihilego! Your post will be logged into the archive.
Victim of the week #16 - Aegislash

Definitely triggering cant say with this one. Aegislash certainly left its fair share of influence on the ORAS metagame, and it has not disappointed doing the same thus far in Sun and Moon. Aegislash's three main sets, being Offensive Weakness Policy / SubToxic / Ghostium Z are all extremely annoying to deal with. Scouting Aegislash at team preview is often out of the question, given that Aegislash's sets are all so splashable and could fit in on almost any team. Aeigislash's main niche however comes in its ability, Stance Change, allowing it to switch its defensive stats with offensive when attacking, and offensive with defensive when defending. This allows Aegislash to be an amazing offensive and defensive pivot, which is coupled extremely well in tandem with its typing of Steel / Ghost, providing a plethora of resistances and a handy immunity to Normal and Fighting-type. So, how do you deal with Aegislash?

Submissions are open and will be closed in four days from now. Best of luck everyone!

Charizard @ Charizardite Y
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Flamethrower / Fire Blast
- Solar Beam
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Flame Charge

Mega Charizard Y is the perfect counter to Aegislash, OHKOing every standard set with sun-boosted fire attacks. The set itself is pretty standard, with coverage for grass and ground types, while Flame Charge boosts Zard-Y's speed. You can use Fire Blast if you want more power, but I prefer Flamethrower because it doesn't miss when it counts.

Offensive Calcs
:
(vs Special & Physical Attackers) 252 SpA Mega Charizard Y Flamethrower vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Aegislash-Shield in Sun: 188-224 (112.5 - 134.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO
(vs Dragonwhale's SubToxic) 252 SpA Mega Charizard Y Flamethrower vs. 220 HP / 36 SpD Aegislash-Shield in Sun: 186-218 (114.1 - 133.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Defensive Calcs:
(vs Special Attacker) 252+ SpA Aegislash-Blade Shadow Ball vs. 0 HP / 4 SpD Mega Charizard Y: 75-88 (49 - 57.5%) -- 93.8% chance to 2HKO
0 Atk Aegislash-Blade Shadow Sneak vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mega Charizard Y: 40-48 (26.1 - 31.3%) -- guaranteed 4HKO

Well I'm definitely picking Mega Charizard Y here
Okay since the most obvious/popular choice was already taken, I'm going to have to go with something a bit more meme-friendly. Without further ado...

Diggersby @ Life Orb/Groundium Z
Ability: Huge Power
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe OR 4 HP / 252 Atk / 44 Def / 4 SpD / 204 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Swords Dance
- Earthquake
- Return
- Quick Attack

What is up with GameFreak giving rabbits with mediocre offensive stats a phenomenal ability in HUGE POWER? HUGE POWER turns what would be an otherwise bad 'mon (looking at you Thick Fat Azumarill) into a 'mon that does HUGE DAMAGE. With 252+ Atk and HUGE POWER, Diggersby actually possesses a higher attack stat than any other Ground type in the BSS metagame, meaning that opponents who EV their Aegislash to take an EQ from Adamant Lando-T are in for a nasty surprise when they face Diggersby. Life Orb provides Diggersby with more late-game cleaning utility than Groundium; however, having a Ground type nuke isn't a bad option if you have a Z-Move slot open on your team. Plus, Diggersby is T H I C C enough to tank any hit from Aegislash (barring Atk invested Sacred Sword) and is immune to its Ghost STAB, meaning that a well-timed switch can get Diggersby in for free.

Offensive Calcs:
252+ Atk Huge Power Diggersby Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Aegislash-Shield: 158-188 (94.6 - 112.5%) -- 75% chance to OHKO [note the lack of LO]
252+ Atk Life Orb Huge Power Diggersby Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Aegislash-Shield: 205-244 (122.7 - 146.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Just for the sake of argument, let's assume your opponent is using Aegislash as their defensive wall...
252+ Atk Life Orb Huge Power Diggersby Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Aegislash-Shield: 156-187 (93.4 - 111.9%) -- 56.3% chance to OHKO GONE

Defensive Calcs:
Aegislash-Shield Shadow Ball vs. Diggersby: 0-0 (0 - 0%) -- aim for the horn next time [mish mish]
252+ SpA Aegislash-Blade Flash Cannon vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Diggersby: 103-123 (64.3 - 76.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
0 Atk Aegislash-Blade Sacred Sword vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Diggersby: 120-142 (74.5 - 88.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

The alternate EV spread allows you to get a favorable roll vs max Atk Aegi's Sacred Sword while still outrunning max speed Timid/Jolly Aegislash (who the hell runs that?):
252+ Atk Aegislash-Blade Sacred Sword vs. 4 HP / 44 Def Diggersby: 146-174 (90.6 - 108%) -- 43.8% chance to OHKO (Adamant/Brave)
252 Atk Aegislash-Blade Sacred Sword vs. 4 HP / 44 Def Diggersby: 134-158 (83.2 - 98.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO (Jolly)

I would probably argue that the first EV spread is better for general team purposes, but the second spread works better as the dedicated Aegi killer, as it beats any set outside of physical LO or Fightinium-Z/Steelium-Z. Of course, what set it is doesn't really matter when you outspeed and OHKO anyway! :P

If your opponent is smart and switches out Aegislash, you can get a free SD. While not particularly relevant to the Aegislash discussion, it is neat to see what +2 Diggersby OHKOs...
+2 252+ Atk Life Orb Huge Power Diggersby Quick Attack vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Mega Charizard Y: 142-168 (92.8 - 109.8%) -- 56.3% chance to OHKO
+2 252+ Atk Life Orb Huge Power Diggersby Quick Attack vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Tapu Koko: 133-157 (91 - 107.5%) -- 50% chance to OHKO
+2 252+ Atk Life Orb Huge Power Diggersby Quick Attack vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Greninja: 160-188 (108.8 - 127.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO
+2 252+ Atk Life Orb Huge Power Diggersby Return vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Mega Venusaur: 185-218 (98.9 - 116.5%) -- 93.8% chance to OHKO
+2 252+ Atk Life Orb Huge Power Diggersby Return vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Celesteela: 104-122 (50.9 - 59.8%) -- 86.7% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

SHOW ME YOUR F***ING COUNTERS!

Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk

Unlike chandeliers, this s00kster really puts Aegislash in its place with this set. While Aegislash is super bulky and fairly powerful, but Gengar can set up a sub or try to status Aeigislash, which eventually leads to Aegislash getting "Spooked" as one could put it. I'm going to add a bit of filler right here so it looks like I actually have more evidence than I actually have. Gengar is great in general too because it can "Spook" many other common threats like Dewgong, any tapu that's not a scarfed Lele, and it can even do damage to other mons (help me out here it's late when I'm writing this).

Offensive calcs:
0 SpA Mega Gengar Hex (65 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Aegislash-Shield: 84-98 (50.2 - 58.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
0 SpA Mega Gengar Hex (130 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Aegislash-Shield: 164-194 (98.2 - 116.1%) -- 87.5% chance to OHKO
252+ SpA Choice Specs Dewgong Ice Beam vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Mega Gengar: 90-106 (53.8 - 63.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Defensive Calcs:
252+ SpA Aegislash-Shield Shadow Ball vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Mega Gengar: 90-108 (53.8 - 64.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
0 Atk Aegislash-Shield Shadow Sneak vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Mega Gengar: 32-42 (19.1 - 25.1%) -- Miniscule chance to 4HKO [Decent chance sneak doesn't break sub]

Gliscor @ Toxic Orb
Ability: Poison Heal
Level: 50
EVs: 212 HP / 4 Atk / 4 Def / 220 SpD / 68 Spe
Careful Nature
- Earthquake
- Substitute
- Protect
- Guillotine / Toxic

Comes in on any common move. As it 1hkos Blade form it can Protect on attacks and then EQ or Substitute on predicted King's Shields or switches. Aegislash really has very few options against a well played Gliscor.
This set even hits 124 speed, Aegislash's max is 123; just perfect.
Offensive
4 Atk Gliscor Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Aegislash-Blade: 186-222 (111.3 - 132.9%)
4 Atk Gliscor Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Aegislash-Shield: 80-96 (47.9 - 57.4%) -- 82.4% chance to 2HKO

Defensive

4 Atk Aegislash-Blade Shadow Sneak vs. 212 HP / 4 Def Gliscor: 27-33 (15.2 - 18.6%)
Even the rare HP Ice isn't likely to KO
252+ SpA Aegislash-Blade Hidden Power Ice vs. 212 HP / 220+ SpD Gliscor: 152-180 (85.8 - 101.6%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO

Lo and behold, Scrappy Pangoro to your rescue!

Heatran @ Expert Belt
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 20 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpA / 28 SpD / 204 Spe
Modest Nature
- Fire Blast
- Flash Cannon
- Ancient Power
- Earth Power
Heatran brings a great set of resistances and a lot of power, as well as the ability to switch in on Fire-Type attacks from pokemon like Charizard Y. Against Aegislash, it outspeeds and OHKO's all sets besides full SpD, but those won't be able to do much back. The EV spread and Item maximize the damage output while giving Tran the ability to bluff a choice set, Speed investment lets it outpace everything up to neutral nature base 70 (read: Breloom, Cloyster), but 220 EVs could be used if you want to catch max Speed Celesteela. The spare EVs are used to boost its Special Defense so Charizard Y's Focus Blast has a lower chance of KOing. Despite the appalling Ground weakness Heatran can deal with a variety of common threats including Mega Charizard Y, Mega Charizard X variants lacking Earthquake, three of the Tapu's, Ferrothorn, Volcarona, and Mawile. Mimikyu sets lacking SD+Ghostium Z can be defeated too, or Heatran can revenge if the Z move is already used.

If Fire Blast's accuracy is a concern, a Choice Specs set with Flamethrower also picks the OHKO on Aegislash-Shield, as well as getting the Earth Power OHKO vs bulky Mega Gengar - if you don't fall for the Hypnosis..

252+ SpA Expert Belt Heatran Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Aegislash-Shield: 175-209 (104.7 - 125.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252+ SpA Aegislash-Blade Shadow Ball vs. 20 HP / 28 SpD Heatran: 78-93 (46.1 - 55%) -- 61.3% chance to 2HKO

I actually used this pre-bank.

Suicune(Chesto Berry)
Ability : Pressure
EVs : 252 Hp / 156 Def / 100 SpD
Bold Nature

-Calm Mind
-Scald
-Rest
-Ice Beam/Substitute/Mirror Coat

The standard ChestoCune puts the three common Aegislash sets in a tough spots letting Suicune potentially set up on it. It can switch in on Z-Shadow Ball and heal the damage off with rest. The sub-toxic set of Aegi is hard to pull against this Suicune and the physical set highly fears the burn from Scald. Calcs below :
252+ SpA Aegislash-Blade Shadow Ball vs. 252 HP / 100 SpD Suicune: 67-81 (32.3 - 39.1%) -- 99% chance to 3HKO
252+ SpA Aegislash-Blade Never-Ending Nightmare (160 BP) vs. 252 HP / 100 SpD Suicune: 135-160 (65.2 - 77.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 Atk Aegislash-Blade Never-Ending Nightmare (140 BP) vs. 252 HP / 156+ Def Suicune: 94-112 (45.4 - 54.1%) -- 50.4% chance to 2HKO

While ChestoCune is not as awesome as it was in gen6, it still retains viability being a solid check to pokemon like Garchomp , Salamence , Blaziken , Mamoswine etc.

Volcarona @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Flame Body
Level: 50
EVs: 252 HP / 236 Def / 20 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Quiver Dance
- Fiery Dance/ Flamethrower
- Roost
- Will-O-Wisp
Defensive Volcarona can switch in on any move Aegislash wants to throw at it, including Never-Ending Nightmare (it can then recover with Sitrus Berry and live the following Shadow Sneak), and set up on it with Quiver Dance. You can run Fiery Dance for the possible SpA boost or Flamethrower for the guaranteed 2HKO on Leftovers Aegislash. Volcarona can also burn would-be counters who try to switch in on it, i.e. Garchomp. Will-O-Wisp also allows it to check physical Aegislash, except for the rare Head Smash/Rock Slide/Rockium Z varients. Fortunately most Aegislash aren't of this sort. 20 Speed EVs allow unboosted Volcarona to outrun that cheeky max speed jolly Breloom, and outspeed base 130s (i.e. Mega Gengar, Tapu Koko) at +1.

0 SpA Volcarona Fiery Dance vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Aegislash-Shield: 84-98 (50.2 - 58.6%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ SpA Aegislash-Blade Shadow Ball vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Volcarona: 81-96 (42.1 - 50%) -- 0.4% chance to 2HKO
252+ SpA Aegislash-Blade Never-Ending Nightmare (160 BP) vs. 252 HP / 0 SpD Volcarona: 160-190 (83.3 - 98.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Milotic @ Leftovers/Rocky Helmet
Ability: Marvel Scale
EVs: 252 HP/140 Def/116 Sp.def
Nature: Calm/Bold
-Scald
-Ice Beam
-Recover
-Haze

By virtue of it stats and Haze, Milotic can wall every set bar the toxic variant and stall against it. Scald is there for burn, Ice Beam for Dragons, Recover for longevity, and Haze to shut down set-up sweepers. It fits well on balanced and offensive teams who need an emergency check to set sweepers. Leftovers for extra Recovery, but Rocky Helmet can be used to punish physical attackers. Marvel Scale over competitive to punish status users, and competitive with Haze is counterproductive.

Offensive Calcs:
(vs Special & Physical Attackers) 252 SpA Mega Charizard Y Flamethrower vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Aegislash-Shield in Sun: 188-224 (112.5 - 134.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO
(vs Dragonwhale's SubToxic) 252 SpA Mega Charizard Y Flamethrower vs. 220 HP / 36 SpD Aegislash-Shield in Sun: 186-218 (114.1 - 133.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Defensive Calcs:

0 HP / 0 Def Greninja: 160-188 (108.8 - 127.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Substitute
- Will-O-Wisp / Hypnosis

EVs: 212 HP / 4 Atk / 4 Def / 220 SpD / 68 Spe
Careful Nature
- Earthquake

- Guillotine / Toxic

Comes in on any common move. As it 1hkos Blade form it can Protect on attacks and then EQ or Substitute on predicted King's Shields or switches. Aegislash really has very few options against a well played Gliscor.
This set even hits 124 speed, Aegislash's max is 123; just perfect.

While ChestoCune is not as awesome as it was in gen6, it still retains viability being a solid check to pokemon like Garchomp , Salamence , Blaziken , Mamoswine etc.

Volcarona @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Flame Body

The Squash's Mega Charizard-Y great mon. Guaranteed OHKO is always nice. For greater memes you can do Substitute + Roost Specially Defensive Zard-Y but the standard set works too! Unlike some of the other Pokemon that check it more defensively, I like that Zard puts the momentum in your favor.

Jhon's Gliscor is a really neat Aegislash counter. The ability to out mind-game the ultimate mind-game 'mon with sub and protect is really valuable, and Gliscor's Poison Heal completely ruins the point of the SubToxic variant. Gliscor has to be a bit careful with Weakness Policy variants, but not if you get a Sub up or hit Blade form after some mind games!
