SM Battle Spot Singles Victim Of The Week

VoTW banner v3.png

[Approved by cant say, banner by yours truly, ThickFatAzumarill]
Throughout generations, we've witnessed significant changes in the metagame through the exponential rise and fall of threatening Pokemon. Despite this, there have and always will be certain Pokemon which dominate and stand out above the rest. Whether these threats are offensive or defensive, every player should have an idea of how to deal with said threats. That's where you guys come in!

The purpose behind Victim Of The Week is to take a top tier threat and flip it on its head with a Pokemon that can either check or counter it. With this, we can all share our own way of dealing with said threat and gain broader, more sophisticated knowledge of how to deal with these Pokemon.

Procedure:
  • Every round, I will nominate a Pokemon for discussion. You guys will then discuss and nominate various Pokemon that you believe can either check or counter the designated threat, with a clear explanation of how exactly they do that
  • Each Victim Of The Week will consist of four days for posting nominations and three days for voting. The new Victim Of The Week will be announced on the same day as the previous week's winner
  • After the deadline, there are three days where everyone can vote on which set they think is best. Bandwagon votes are illegal and will result in your vote being void. Your vote must also be written in bold
  • Once the results are in, the winner's set will be archived and the next Victim Of The Week will be announced
Rules:
  • Your nomination must include an importable set
  • When nominating your Pokemon, include how it can check / counter the Victim Of The Week, how it works, and how effective it is in the Battle Spot metagame. Damage calcs are especially useful for helping back up your nomination (although are not compulsory). You can find the damage calculator here
  • Your Pokemon must hold some sort of viability in the metagame. Niche Pokemon are perfectly fine, but don't go with Pokemon hold minuscule viability like Shedinja and Electivire. The viability rankings are your best friend and will give you a great guideline of what kind of Pokemon you should be looking at (but also feel free to be creative and stem away from this if you're feeling saucy)
  • Respect other player's nominations. You may not agree with what they say, but in the end it is their nomination. Feel free to leave opinions, but don't be rude about it
  • Your check / counter must abide by the following definitions;
Pokémon A checks Pokémon B if, when Pokémon A is given a free switch into Pokémon B, Pokémon A can win every time, even under the worst case scenario, without factoring in hax.

Pokémon A counters Pokémon B if Pokémon A can manually switch into Pokémon B and still win every time, even under the worst case scenario, without factoring in hax.
  • There is to be strictly no modification of your nomination after the four-day deadline. Changes in votes are allowed, but must be done within the three day deadline and as follows;

Victim of the Week #28 - Primarina

We're reopening VoTW with a fresh start, and why not do it with one of the new Starter Pokemon of the generation? Primarina boasts a high Special Attack stat, coupled with a fantastic typing in Water/Fairy, and also a good moveset, with access to support moves such as Perish Song, Hidden Power and even Sing if you manage to hit your target. Not only that, it also has access to one of the strongest Z-Moves in Oceanic Operetta, which has incredible 195 BP. It may be slow, but that means that the Soloist Pokemon is a great Trick Room abuser.

So, how do you deal with this mon?

Submissions will be closed in 4 days from now. Good Luck!

Ability: Thick Fat
EVs: 252 HP / 252 SpD / 4 Spe
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Giga Drain
- Sludge Bomb
- Synthesis
- Leech Seed
Just wanted to get it early. Moveset and EVs might not be final.

Before I begin, shoutouts to dogknees for doing a great job running the old VoTW thread and to ThickFatAzumarill for starting a new one. Hopefully it will run just as long, if not longer than the original. You guys are the real MVPs!

Now back to our regularly scheduled VoTW nomination.

SpanishInquisition (Blaziken) @ Grassium Z
Ability: Speed Boost
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Fire Blast
- Focus Blast / Hidden Power [Ice]
- Solar Beam
- Protect

Z-Solar Beam Blaze is the perfect Primarina lure, since no one expects it until it's too late. It scores a clean OHKO and leaves your opponent down a mon and thoroughly bamboozled. The only thing you have to worry about is Sash Prima and getting a low roll, but both of those can be mitigated if you pair our extra crispy friend with a stealth rocks user.

252+ SpA Blaziken Bloom Doom (190 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Primarina: 186-220 (99.4 - 117.6%) -- 93.8% chance to OHKO (Guaranteed OHKO if rocks are up)

All in all, it makes a great lure and fits any team in need of a surprise Water-type check.

Breloom @ Focus Sash
Ability: Technician
Level: 50
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Spore
- Bullet Seed
- Mach Punch
- Rock Tomb

Breloom easily threatens Primarina with a powerful STAB Technitian-boosted Bullet Seed, which breaks through Primarina's Focus Sash, or threatening to put it to sleep with Spore. Focus Sash allows Breloom to live any hit from full health.

252+ Atk Technician Breloom Bullet Seed (2 hits) vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Primarina: 180-216 (96.2 - 115.5%) -- approx. 87.5% chance to OHKO

Breloom is fully capable of threatening other opponents such as Mimikyu and Charizard.

Tapu Bulu @ Assault Vest
Ability: Grassy Surge
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SpD
Adamant Nature
- Horn Leech
- Wood Hammer
- Stone Edge
- Superpower

While M-Venusaur is a good counter to Fini, I think that Bulu is a better counter to Primarina considering her less physical side (I also say it because Venu has been picked before :-P ).
I choose the AV set because of the high SpA stat of Primarina, its more staying power than the Bander set, and because Bulu doesn't need that extra power to beat the sirena.

Offensive calcs

252+ Atk Tapu Bulu Horn Leech vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Primarina in Grassy Terrain: 272-324 (145.4 - 173.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO
252+ Atk Tapu Bulu Wood Hammer vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Primarina in Grassy Terrain: 434-512 (232 - 273.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Defensive calcs

VS Oceanic Operetta
252+ SpA Primarina Hydro Vortex (175 BP) vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Assault Vest Tapu Bulu: 55-66 (31 - 37.2%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery
252+ SpA Primarina Ice Beam vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Assault Vest Tapu Bulu: 78-92 (44 - 51.9%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery

VS Specs
252+ SpA Choice Specs Primarina Moonblast vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Assault Vest Tapu Bulu: 91-108 (51.4 - 61%) -- 91% chance to 2HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery
252+ SpA Choice Specs Primarina Ice Beam vs. 252 HP / 4 SpD Assault Vest Tapu Bulu: 114-136 (64.4 - 76.8%) -- guaranteed 2HKO after Grassy Terrain recovery

Ice Beam can hurt Bulu hard, even with an AV, especially by the Specs Primarina. But Bulu outspeed Primarina so it can switch-in and take a hit before retaliate the next turn with a guaranteed OHKO. Also Horn Leech gives back HP so the % given by the damage calculator have to be balanced and reconsidered with the amount of HP that Bulu could win.

- Gyro Ball
- Leech Seed
- Protect / Stealth Rock / Spikes

Want a Pokemon that can wall Primarina to hell and back, as well as check or counter many premier fat Water, Fairy, and Ground types of Battle Spot Singles? Well this Pokemon can prove to be a real THORN in their side as #12 in usage on the Singles ladder (this season so far).

Ferrothorn can pretty much directly counter all variants of Primarina that don't carry HP Fire, and if you're afraid of Ferro dying easily to HP Fire, you can run Occa Berry depending on how dank you want your memes to be.

This EV spread is tailored to kill 252 / 0 Primarina with Power Whip about 75% of the time, although you can kill it with 3 Gyro Balls if you're patient.

Leftovers is your generic shiet item to put on Ferrothorn, although with the amount of crap potentially running weak-ass fire coverage on Battle Spot (like Greninja, Mawile, Celesteela, Tapu Lele, and Primarina), Occa Berry is a decent niche item to consider in your team building if you really want Ferro to survive.

252+ SpA Choice Specs Primarina Hidden Power Fire vs. 252 HP / 100+ SpD Occa Berry Ferrothorn: 82-98 (45.3 - 54.1%) -- 44.1% chance to 2HKO

252+ SpA Primarina Hidden Power Fire vs. 252 HP / 100+ SpD Occa Berry Ferrothorn: 56-66 (30.9 - 36.4%) -- 50.6% chance to 3HKO

252+ SpA Primarina Oceanic Operetta vs. 252 HP / 100+ SpD Ferrothorn: 66-78 (36.4 - 43%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

252+ SpA Primarina Ice Beam vs. 252 HP / 100+ SpD Ferrothorn: 41-49 (22.6 - 27%) -- 45.9% chance to 4HKO

88 Atk Ferrothorn Power Whip vs. 252 HP / 4 Def Primarina: 180-212 (96.2 - 113.3%) -- 75% chance to OHKO

Defensive:

252+ SpA Primarina Moonblast vs. 252 HP / 12 SpD Toxapex: 32-38 (20.3 - 24.2%) -- possible 6HKO after Black Sludge recovery
252+ SpA Primarina Sparkling Aria vs. 252 HP / 12 SpD Toxapex: 30-36 (19.1 - 22.9%) -- possible 6HKO after Black Sludge recovery
252+ SpA Primarina Oceanic Operetta vs. 252 HP / 12 SpD Toxapex: 66-78 (42 - 49.6%) -- guaranteed 3HKO after Black Sludge recovery
252+ SpA Life Orb Primarina Hydro Pump vs. 252 HP / 12 SpD Toxapex: 92-109 (30.2 - 35.8%) -- guaranteed 4HKO after Black Sludge recovery

This means that at full health, a Primarina that hits Sing and gets a 3 turn sleep still cannot KO Toxapex with 3 hits without a critical hit. However, Specs Primarina with Psychic can beat it. Psychic sees 9.6% use on Primarina, which is much lower than HP Fire usage.

The reason why I chose Toxapex lies on the context of Primarina and Toxapex. When I played with sample teams with Primarina myself, it seemed to me that Primarina is mainly used as a part of a Trick Room mode with Trick Room Mimikyu or P2 and M-Mawile, or as part of a Fire / Water / Grass, commonly paired with Mimikyu or Blaziken or Zard X and Ferrothorn. Toxapex beats most of its common partners other than Landorus-T and Sub Mence which you should have something like a Skarm or Celesteela for, and they don't like switching on you in fear of Toxic or Scald burn. You are also most likely pairing this with Chansey which also makes Primarina's life harder.

Voting for Feesh Squad's Breloom. Breloom provides some useful utility with Spore and can pretty much always take out Primarina with Spore + Bullet Seed unless you get unlucky. It also can force switches, as everyone fears the dreaded spore, which can give you the edge in battle.

Victim of the Week #29 - Mega Charizard Y

I'm surprised we didn't cover this one before. Mega Charizard Y is an incredibly powerful mon, and Drought makes it even more dangerous. Boasting an incredible 159 Special Attack stat, Charizard has the options to be a potent late-game sweeper or early game wallbreaker. Charizard's moveset may be a bit limited, but its STAB fire-moves in the sun already hit very hard, and it has access to the coverage it needs in Solar Beam, Focus Blast and Hidden Power(either Ice or Ground). So, how do you deal with this mon?

Submissions are open and will be closed in 4 days from now. Good luck everyone!
