Victim of the Week #31 - Snorlax

This week we have another old pal, but instead of blocking Route 12, it's blocking your path to victory! Snorlax was buffed this gen thanks to the new pinch berry mechanic, that alongside Gluttony and Recycle, grants it a sort of realiable recovery. Snorlax can run a defensive phaze set or an offensive Curse one. While Snorlax can't set up Stealth Rock like other phazers like Hippowdon and Skarmory, it differentiates itself from both by possessing an incredible Special Defense stat and no weaknesses to common types such as Water, Electric and Fire. All in all, it's a very tough mon to take down if you aren't prepared for it. So, how do you deal with this mon?

Submissions are open and will be closed in 4 days from now. Good luck everyone!

Clefable @ Kee Berry
Ability: Unaware
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
- Calm Mind
- Minimize / Toxic
- Moonlight
- Moonblast

Sorry I can't be more specific this week, but I need to go down to help the fam prepare for that vicious storm that's probably gonna strike out of the Atlantic.

Anyways, Unaware ignores Snorlax's boosts, and a Kee Berry makes it easier to wall Snorlax after taking a hit. You hit Calm Mind or Minimize, and then let RNGesus take the wheel with those misses. CM up, then proceed to blast through Snorlax with boosted Moonblasts.

And as usual, it checks setup sweepers and physical attackers that are not steel types

Ability: Adaptability
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Bullet Punch
- Close Combat
- Swords Dance
- Blaze Kick/Crunch/Ice Punch

Pretty straight forward: just switch in with it and OHKO Snorlax, and Snorlax won't really OHKO it on the switch if it hasn't set-up yet:
252+ Atk Snorlax Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Mega Lucario: 124-146 (85.5 - 100.6%) -- 6.3% chance to OHKO
And if it did set-up, you get Lucario in for free.
252 Atk Adaptability Mega Lucario Close Combat vs. +1 252 HP / 4 Def Snorlax: 276-328 (103.3 - 122.8%) -- guaranteed OHKO

You can also run Crunch or Blaze Kick to get Skarmory or Gengar & Slowbro by surprise as they switch in, considering they are some of Snorlax's most common partners

Snorlax is only weak to Fighting-types and Blaziken is the most effective one. The chicken can also setup and SD gives more boost to Ken's Attack than Curse gives to Lax's Defense.

VS Def Lax

252+ Atk Mega Blaziken High Jump Kick vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Snorlax: 270-318 (101.1 - 119.1%) -- guaranteed OHKO

0 Atk Snorlax Return vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Mega Blaziken: 76-90 (49 - 58%) -- 95.3% chance to 2HKO
0 Atk Snorlax Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Mega Blaziken: 100-118 (64.5 - 76.1%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

VS Off Lax

252+ Atk Mega Blaziken High Jump Kick vs. +1 252 HP / 4 Def Snorlax: 266-314 (99.6 - 117.6%) -- 93.8% chance to OHKO

252+ Atk Snorlax Return vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Mega Blaziken: 102-121 (65.8 - 78%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252+ Atk Snorlax Earthquake vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Mega Blaziken: 134-158 (86.4 - 101.9%) -- 12.5% chance to OHKO

One of the few Pokemon who completely walls a standard Snorlax set. It has a niche as a stall-breaker, handling staples like Skarmory, Celesteela, Chansey, Toxapex, and Slowbro. Soft-Checks M-Kang, Loppuny, Salamence, Garchomp, Koko, Porygon2, and Lando-T to name a few. Calcs: 252 SpA Life Orb Tapu Koko Thunderbolt vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Eviolite Misdreavus in Electric Terrain: 66-78 (39.5 - 46.7%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 164 SpA / 68 SpD / 20 Spe
Modest Nature
IVs: 0 Atk

SubToxic Aegislash works great against bulky mons like Snorlax, being able to stall it out without too many problems. This spread lets Aegislash OHKO max HP Gengar with Shadow Ball (Gengar being Snorlax's most common parter) and outspeeds up to 4 speed Tyranitar, while also giving it the bulk to stall out other mons like P2. The only thing you have to worry about is if your opponet's Snorlax runs Immunity, but most of the time they'll be running Gluttony since it's much better.

Calcs
252+ Atk Snorlax Earthquake vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Aegislash-Shield: 80-96 (47.9 - 57.4%) -- 44.1% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery
252+ Atk Snorlax Fire Punch vs. 252 HP / 0 Def Aegislash-Shield: 60-72 (35.9 - 43.1%) -- 94.9% chance to 3HKO after Leftovers recovery

Johta's Mega Lucario

I was on the edge between this and Mega Blaziken, but I went for Mega Lucario for its perfectly accurate STAB Fighting move as well as how stronk it is vs much of the meta.

Edit: Kudos to Leader Wallace for that dank Misdreavus set.

The Squash's Aegislash. No I'm not biased lol. Deals with Snorlax effectively, can pressure switchins with Toxic as well, and is just generally good. Blaziken is sick too but High Jump Kick is usually pretty easy to switch into (hello Gengar aka #1 teammate) and if you switch into a bulky Lax using Curse you lose.

Victim of the Week #32 - Kartana

Up next we have the Drawn Sword Pokemon, Kartana! This Ultra Beast boasts an incredible base 181 Attack and thanks to its base 109 Speed, it hits a decent speed tier. While it lacks in movepool and in defensive stats (more so on the Special side), Kartana is a potent wallbreaker, thanks to Swords Dance and Z-Crystals giving it some powerful options, such as Black Hole Eclipse or Breakneck Blitz. Even without Z-Moves, a Focus Sash almost always ensures that Kartana can get a Swords Dance off safely. So, how do you deal with this mon?

Submissions are open and will be closed in 4 days from now. Good luck everyone!

Lopunny-Mega @ Lopunnite
Ability: Scrappy
Level: 50
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Fake Out
- Return
- High Jump Kick
- Substitute/ Ice Punch/ Power-up Punch

Pretty Simple. Fake Out to break the sash, OHKO with High Jump Kick afterwards. I like Substitute thanks to its ability to get a free turn against Blaziken, and then ko it with High Jump Kick. Ice Punch threatens Salamence and Landorus, two common switch ins, while Power-Up Punch to helps Lopunny break through bulky foes like Scizor.

Celesteela @ Leftovers
Ability: Beast Boost
Level: 50
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD or 252 HP / 132 Def / 124 SpD
Relaxed Nature
- Heavy Slam
- Leech Seed
- Protect
- Flamethrower / Fire Blast

Can switch into a Fighinium Z unboosted AoP no problem, although it dies to a +2. However, any and every variant folds to Flamethrower, unless Sash. Ironically enough, most Kartana are Darkium Z, Sashed, and Scarfed on the PGL ladder. Other than that, it's a generic annoyer ProSeed Steela.

Venusaur @ Venusaurite
Ability: Chlorophyll
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Synthesis / Sleep Powder
- Sludge Bomb
- Giga Drain
- HP Fire

M-Venusaur is the answer for all the Grass-types in BSS. The Special Defense of Kartana is so low that you can keep the bulk of Venusaur. This Mega is still an efficient tank.

0 SpA Mega Venusaur Hidden Power Fire vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Kartana: 252-300 (186.6 - 222.2%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 Atk Kartana Corkscrew Crash (140 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Mega Venusaur: 96-114 (51.3 - 60.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Arcanine @ Firium Z
Ability: Intimidate
Level: 50
EVs: 92 HP / 252 Atk / 164 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Flare Blitz
- Extreme Speed
- Wild Charge / Roar
- Protect / Will-O-Wisp / Morning Sun

Arcanine can switch into opposing Kartana and smack them back. Hard. Intimidate helps with the switch. Extreme Speed picks up weakened foes and sort of remediate Arcanine's avarage speed. The last two slots are to fill your needs. Wild Charge will OHKO greedy Gyarados that goes for the Dragon Dance instead of attacking straight away, but Roar also fills this slot well as resetting a Z-boosted Mimikyu or Eevee is just as good as it sounds.

252+ Atk Arcanine Inferno Overdrive (190 BP) vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Kartana through Protect: 127-150 (94 - 111.1%) -- 68.8% chance to OHKO

yeah.

Level: 50
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Spe
Bold Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Discharge / Volt Switch
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Roost
- Heat Wave

Zapdos can defeat most variants of Kartana, resisting its STABs and taking little damage from its coverage moves. Rocky Helmet breaks Kartana's sash and Static has a 30% chance to paralyze it, making life pretty hard for the origami sword. The only sets Zapdos has to worry about are Z-Move ones, and even then, only +2 Z-Giga Impact can knock it out from full.

252 Atk Kartana Leaf Blade vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Zapdos: 39-47 (19.7 - 23.8%) -- possible 5HKO
252 Atk Kartana Sacred Sword vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Zapdos: 26-31 (13.1 - 15.7%) -- possible 7HKO
252 Atk Kartana Night Slash vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Zapdos: 41-49 (20.8 - 24.8%) -- guaranteed 5HKO

+2 252 Atk Kartana Leaf Blade vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Zapdos: 79-93 (40.1 - 47.2%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
+2 252 Atk Kartana Night Slash vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Zapdos: 82-97 (41.6 - 49.2%) -- guaranteed 3HKO

+2 252 Atk Kartana Bloom Doom (175 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Zapdos: 153-180 (77.6 - 91.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+2 252 Atk Kartana Black Hole Eclipse (140 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Zapdos: 164-193 (83.2 - 97.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
+2 252 Atk Kartana Breakneck Blitz (200 BP) vs. 252 HP / 252+ Def Zapdos: 233-275 (118.2 - 139.5%) -- guaranteed OHKO
