Let's go with one of the most controversial mons in the meta right now, the newly buffed Zangoose.

Zangoose @ Sitrus Berry
Ability: Immunity
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Belly Drum
- Knock Off
- Quick Attack
- Close Combat

Submit till the 10th.

@ Fairium Z
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Nasty Plot
- Shadow Ball
- Dazzling Gleam
- Taunt

This Mismagius set is made specifically to check Zangoose, which dies to a regular Twinkle Tackle. While this set doesn't have much use outside of this, there are a couple of situations where this may be useful outside of this, such as having a chance to OHKO Druddigon before it gets rocks up, as well as being able to catch potential Dark types such as Sneasel on the predicted Nasty Plot.

Despite it's little use, it does do it's job quite well, being able to KO the Zangoose after a Belly Drum.

252 SpA Mismagius Twinkle Tackle (160 BP) vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Zangoose: 227-268 (78.8 - 93%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Whimsicott @ Leftovers
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 252 HP / 208 Def / 48 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Leech Seed
- U-turn
- Encore
- Substitute

Encoring a mon in to belly drum is hilarious, especially if the opponent is expecting to sweep. Sub-seed Whimsicott uses this strategy to provide a solid check to zangoose - any unboosted attack will deal no more than 20% damage to this set and as long as Whimsicott reaches a speed higher than 306, its encore will outspeed quick attack in the +1 priority bracket. For a defensive Whimsicott this is most efficiently achieved via a +spe nature an 48 evs invested in speed. A fast special sweeper set with life orb and encore would also work, although is most vulnerable to getting worn down.

If sticky web is up, this set can still live a +6 quick attack and restrict zangoose to one move.

+6 252 Atk Zangoose Quick Attack vs. 252 HP / 208 Def Whimsicott: 220-259 (67.9 - 79.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Lycanroc @ Groundium Z
Ability: Sand Rush
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Stone Edge
- Drill Run
- Accelerock

was gonna do rotom but mon's not strong. stone edge here kills zangoose after a belly drum and sitrus unboosted while lycanroc just takes almost negligble damage from +6 quick attack (im totally serious).

+6 252 Atk Zangoose Quick Attack vs. 0 HP / 4 Def Lycanroc: 169-199 (58 - 68.3%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

it's a check 80% of the time  (this is why you run toxic boost belly drum)

rotom @ electrium z | levitate
timid nature | 4 def / 252 spa / 252 spe
thunderbolt | volt switch | defog / will-o-wisp | shadow ball / hex

here's a somewhat unorthodox rotom set that is able to nuke zangoose and ohko it from full, whilst outspeeding giving it plentiful oppurtinity to fire an electrium z thnderbolt off. although it's not advised to hard switch into zangoose, even though it is immune to stab quick attack and close combat, knock off can ohko rotom even if zangoose is unboosted.

252 SpA Rotom Gigavolt Havoc (175 BP) vs. 4 HP / 0 SpD Zangoose: 348-411 (120.8 - 142.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Spiritomb @ Black Glasses
Ability: Infiltrator
EVs: 212 HP / 252 Atk / 44 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Pursuit
- Sucker Punch
- Foul Play
- Will-O-Wisp

Trapper Spirtomb is a pretty passed up set for Crotomb rn, its immune to Zangoose's quick attack and can knock it out with sucker punch after Belly Drum and rocks chip. Its not a switch in since it hates knock off, but its a solid check otherwise.

252+ Atk Black Glasses Spiritomb Sucker Punch vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Zangoose: 180-213 (62.5 - 73.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

Jolly Nature
- Aerial Ace
- U-turn

- Swords Dance

Eviolite Scyther rises from the forgotten times of ORAS and saves the day with its impressive bulk. Scyther is able to chew a +6 Quick Attack from Zangoose and Aerial Ace does enough damage to kill Zangoose after rocks (after Belly Drum). Scyther is also able to chew +6 CC followed by Quick Attack :o

+6 252 Atk Zangoose Quick Attack vs. 248 HP / 0 Def Eviolite Scyther: 193-228 (56.2 - 66.4%) -- guaranteed 2HKO

EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Shadow Ball
- Sludge Wave
- Energy Ball
- Dazzling Gleam / Destiny Bond

Haunter is naturally faster than Zangoose, immune to Quick Attack, and capable of OHKOing it with Sludge Wave. Choice Scarf also works here as Sludge Wave deals a minimum of 75% to Zangoose without the aid of a boosting item, which is enough to guarantee that Haunter kills it off after Belly Drum+Sitrus Berry.

Gourgeist small is a solid counter to zangoose due to it being imune to both quick attack and close combat while also being faster and able to OHKO it with foul play. It can also switch in multiple times if needed thanks to its bulk and colbur combination.

252 Atk Zangoose Knock Off (97.5 BP) vs. 248 HP / 32 Def Colbur Berry Gourgeist-Small: 80-95 (25.5 - 30.3%) -- guaranteed 4HKO

Sneasel outpaces Delphox, and makes quick work of it with Knock Off, while also being able to trap it with Pursuit. It obviously can't be brought in on a Fire Blast, so it's only a check.

252 Atk Choice Band Sneasel Knock Off vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Delphox: 338-398 (116.1 - 136.7%) -- guaranteed OHKO

252 Atk Choice Band Sneasel Pursuit vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Delphox: 206-246 (70.7 - 84.5%) -- guaranteed 2HKO (OHKOs if they switch, has a decent chance to KO after rocks, regardless of if they switch or not.)

Simple, durable, and good for a few things including this. Not sure why it droped so heavily on VR but it still does it's job. Any other move listed on this set is irrelevant.

Houndoom @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Hasty Nature
- Fire Blast
- Pursuit
- Dark Pulse
- Destiny Bond

Scarf houndoom is a solid counter to cm delphox, being able to resist 1 move and be imune to its stab while not taking much from dazzling gleam and also pursuit trap it or 2hko it with dark pulse even at +1. It can also use an emergency destiny bond if its really needed.

252 SpA Houndoom Dark Pulse vs. +1 0 HP / 4 SpD Delphox: 156-186 (53.6 - 63.9%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
252 SpA Delphox Dazzling Gleam vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Houndoom: 96-114 (32.9 - 39.1%) -- 99.9% chance to 3HKO

Ability: Infiltrator
EVs: 212 HP / 252 Atk / 44 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Pursuit
- Sucker Punch
- Foul Play
- Will-O-Wisp / Shadow Sneak

Trapper Spiritomb is a nice blanket check to Delphox, it can OHKO it with Sucker Punch and deal over half with Shadow Sneak (if its runner Colbur Berry) but has to wary of switching into Fire Blast.

252+ Atk Black Glasses Spiritomb Sucker Punch vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Delphox: 312-368 (107.2 - 126.4%) -- guaranteed OHKO

Type: Null @ Eviolite
Ability: Battle Armor
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Return
- U-turn / Swords Dance
- Rest
- Sleep Talk
type: null is able to tank all of delphox's attacks thanks to its great bulk combined with eviolite, taking about 20% from a stab Fire Blast, and 2hkoing it back with unboosted Return.

252 SpA Delphox Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Eviolite Type: Null: 82-97 (20.8 - 24.6%) -- guaranteed 5HKO
+1 252 SpA Delphox Fire Blast vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Eviolite Type: Null: 123-145 (31.2 - 36.8%) -- 75.5% chance to 3HKO

+2 4 Atk Type: Null Return vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Delphox: 277-327 (95.1 - 112.3%) -- 75% chance to OHKO

Froslass can outspeed Delphox and can 2HKO Delphox with Shadow Ball, The main problem is that Delphox and easily OHKO Forslass with Fire Blast. So, what do you do? Give is a Focus Sash, and then Froslass will easily come up on top as it 2HKOs Delphox with Shadow Ball.

I don't like the idea of using innovation to solve an issue when natural options already exist just used for different things.
Gour has use in answering multiple other pokemon like Virizion so changin the spread seems a wast as leftovers gour does it's job fine anyway.
Helio is frail as shit so when something takes a hit you can retaliate. If for some reason it runs dark pulse you are screwed.

252 SpA Life Orb Heliolisk Thunderbolt vs. 248 HP / 8 SpD Gourgeist-Super: 105-125 (28.1 - 33.5%) -- 94.4% chance to 4HKO after Leftovers recovery

252 SpA Life Orb Heliolisk Thunderbolt vs. 252 HP / 252+ SpD Eviolite Clefairy: 107-126 (31.1 - 36.6%) -- 63.3% chance to 3HKO

A catch-all special check, and it's actually a good glue on balance. It doesn't get chipped by hazards so Helio has no way of getting past it since Clef should always be at a high amount of HP. Other than that, it checks threats like Scarf Vanilluxe and Scarf Delphox, if no Trick.

Well uh I'd just like to preface this with a calm and well structured post with a level headed mindset and..
I can't do it, ban heliolisk

But for now i think i came up with something that can sorta stem the flow abit, even if it's abit unconventional

Virizion @ Assault Vest
Ability: Justified
EVs: 224 Atk / 252 SpD / 32 Spe
Adamant Nature

so i just ran the calcs, this eats a hyper voice like no tomorrow
252 SpA Life Orb Heliolisk Hyper Voice vs. 0 HP / 252 SpD Assault Vest Virizion: 75-90 (23.2 - 27.8%) -- 67.7% chance to 4HKO
You beat out vanilluxe with this incredibly weird speed spread, but hey ice cream is still a threat
and you have great coverage
Personally I think i need to build a team with this and test it, but its 2:31 am and i really wanted to get this out before bed
So g'night all, I hope the set works

Check:

Type: Null @ Eviolite
Ability: Battle Armor
EVs: 248 HP / 8 Def / 252 SpD
Careful Nature
- Return
- Swords Dance / U-turn / Toxic
- Rest
- Sleep Talk / Iron Defense

Type: Null is a reliable check to Heliolisk due to:
  • Insanely good bulk thanks to Eviolite
  • Battle Armor ability (never critically hit)
Thunderbolt/Hyper Voice is barely a 4HKO as Type: Null is able to eat up both of Heliolisk's STABs.
252 SpA Life Orb Heliolisk Thunderbolt vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Eviolite Type: Null: 86-101 (21.8 - 25.6%) -- 0.6% chance to 4HKO
Of course, Heliolisk does have the unreliable Focus Blast as coverage for Type: Null, but even this super effective coverage is a guaranteed 3HKO (ignoring the 70% 30% chance to miss).
252 SpA Life Orb Heliolisk Focus Blast vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Eviolite Type: Null: 151-179 (38.4 - 45.5%) -- guaranteed 3HKO
In return (no pun intended, I'm sorry), Type: Null's uninvested and unboosted Return is an easy 2HKO. Heliolisk suddenly finds itself only able to fire off 2-3 attacks due Life Orb recoil and the large amount of damage it takes from Return. On top of that, hitting Focus Blasts does not prevent Type: Null from resting off the major damage on a slower threat or even to stall out Life Orb recoil depending on Heliolisk's health.
0 Atk Type: Null Return vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Heliolisk: 178-210 (67.1 - 79.2%) -- guaranteed 2HKO
In most cases, I believe it is much wiser for the Heliolisk user to switch out to something that checks/counters Type: Null, which could invite an SD/Iron Defense setup, Toxic, or U-turn if predicted. It is also fun to mention that Choice Specs Thunderbolt/Hyper Voice only garners a 4HKO on Type: Null. In this scenario, Type: Null is definitely a counter to Heliolisk.
252 SpA Choice Specs Heliolisk Thunderbolt vs. 248 HP / 252+ SpD Eviolite Type: Null: 97-115 (24.6 - 29.2%) -- 99.9% chance to 4HKO
This is my first ever post on Smogon, so please let me know how I can improve posts like this.
