In a recent thread I saw some people posting a list of animals that haven't become Pokemon yet. Now I myself have a huge list of things that aren't Pokemon yet, however posting it would have been going off topic. However I liked the idea and thought maybe I should make a thread where we posted our list of things we want to see become Pokemon, but up till now I thought it would be against the rules as speculation. However I then realized that if we do it a certain way, it would not be considered speculation.

So my idea is that we just post the thing that isn't a Pokemon yet and that's it. We don't say what type it would be, what it's stats would be like, nor even what it looked like. Nope, the point of this thread is just to gather a list of things which haven't been made into Pokemon. No speculation, just facts.

So to start things off I'm going to do two things:

1. I'm going to post how I categorized everything. Now if you think there's a category that should be there, shouldn't be there, or maybe combined together we can discuss it. This is just how I categorized my list.
2. Since I have such a huge list, I'm only going to list what I have one category at a time. That should not only keep this thread from becoming overwhelmed but also give everyone else plenty of room to post their list.

So with the ground rules written down, here's my categories with the first category (which is actually a subcategory) filled in with my list:

I've decided to also include a list of type combinations that haven't been done yet or only by one Pokemon family.

NOTE 1: Some Pokemon with a certain type combination on the list I didn't count for one of two reasons:
* means there's a Mega Evolution with that type.
* means there's a non-permanent Alternate Form with that type.
* means there's a Pre-evolution with that type.

NOTE 2: This list doesn't differ from Primary and Secondary type. So for example if a Pokemon was a Rock/Ground type and another was Ground/Rock type I'd count them both as being the same type combination. Now I understand there is some importance to how the types are organized (the Primary-type generally holds heavier influence on the Pokemon's design), but for the purpose of this list we're only concerned with the type combinations.

Normal: Rock, Bug, Steel, Ice

NOTE 4: Some quick term & color choice clarifications:
  • The term "Common" refers to a Pokemon that can be found in the Wild under normal circumstances or evolves to/from a Pokemon found in the Wild. For the purpose of this list, Pokemon excluded from this term are Pseudo-Legendaries (3-stage Pokemon who's final evolution has a BST of 600; this is a notable group thus why separated) and Regional Variants (New forms of previously introduced Pokemon given new Typing and other traits as they "adapted" to the Region they're found in; Until further notice these Pokemon are tied to the Region they're a variant from thus need a reasoning to be appearing in another Region).
  • "Super Forms" refers to Pokemon who got a powered-up version of their species from a "Super Mechanic". At the moment these lists only include Mega Evolutions and Primal Reversions.
  • At the moment, all unique Typings of Pokemon who received evolutions in Legends: Arceus are included in "Regional Variant + Evos" even if they're not considered a Regional Variant by strict definition. They will be removed if the current core series games are updated to allow Pokemon who received new evolutions in Legends: Arceus to evolve into them.
  • The choice of colors are completely random, just used to better separate the Type combinations visually.

NOTE 5:
* The Mono Flying "Common" Pokemon are Rookidee/Corvisquire whom fully evolve into the Flying/Steel-type Corviknight.
* The Ice/Fire Pokemon is Galarian Darmanitan (Zen Mode) which is a temporary alternate form.
* The Fire/Flying "Common" Pokemon are Fletchinder/Talonflame & Oricorio (Baile Style), the latter being an alternate form (not learning any attacking Fire-type Moves, ignoring Revelation Dance's effect).
* The Fire/Psychic "Common" Pokemon are Darmanitan (Zen Mode) & Armarouge, the former being a temporary alternate form.
* The Normal/Fairy "Common" Pokemon are the Jigglypuff family & Azurill, the latter which fully evolves into the Water/Fairy-type Marill.

I also decided to include a list of Pokemon who don't have a "Super Form". So far the following mechanics are considered being a Super Form: Mega Evolution, Primal Reversion, Bond Phenomenon, Ultra Burst, & Gigantamax (excluding the currently unobtainable Eternamax). For the most part these Super Forms are restricted to fully evolved Pokemon (with the few exceptions proving the rule) so won't be including any Pokemon that can evolve. I'll also be counting Regional Variants as their own separate species.

While I am interested in potential "gaps" in what sort of animals and such have been used as models for Pokemon, let me remind everyone that this thread will be locked if it turns into wishlisting. So, please avoid writing about why you really think we need an amoeba Pokemon or the like.

I'm very surprised that there aren't any peafowl yet. They're such an ornate bird, and there are so many bird species we already have, yet we don't have peafowl even though they're universally recognized birds.

While I don't think there's anything wrong with what you said, I would say that you're on the very edge of wishlisting here.

It's very easy to accidentally wishlist, it's why I said we should just list the thing's name. If you want to tell us a bit about the thing then I don't think that'll cross the line, but if you do be VERY careful at not sounding like you're saying there should be a Pokemon based on that thing.

As No Cheese said, this is a pretty risky topic.

I do not think the level of detail you have posted Pikachu315111 is really required. A lot of those latin-ish meaning names mean nothing to 99% of people, and for example, you could simply list "Sharks" as opposed to listing 15 different species (Yes, we have Sharpedo, Yes I also know that these sharks all look different in some way). Things like the Whale/Basking sharks are almost the same animal (and likely would be in terms of Pokemon), so condense it to "Filter feeding Sharks" or something. I'm pretty good with the majority of animals/species but some of the names you've posted I've had to google to get a gist of!

It's probably also worth noting that some of the fish you have listed could be condensed into the same animal. Pike and Barracuda are pretty much the same animal functionally. They just evolved in salt water/fresh water. Both are long, slender, fast, carnivorous fish which are at the top of their food chains. Also, you have listed Electric Eel, which was probably some of the inspiration for the Eelektross line (I know it is mostly based on the Lamprey).

One think I would like to add to this list as one of the more glaring omissions on GF's part, is the Dolphin (of all forms). Likely one of the most popular sea mammals, it seems strange that GF have never introduced a Dolphin like Pokemon. We have baleen whales (Wailord), Seals (Seel/Spheal), Walruses (Walrein) and Dugongs (Dewgong), yet Dolphins are suspiciously absent.

We have baleen whales (Wailord), Seals (Seel/Spheal), Walruses (Walrein) and Dugongs (Dewgong), yet Dolphins are suspiciously absent.
I always see Lanturn as a child between an anglerfish and a dolphin, so there is a dolphin pokemon for me :)

Okay, I looked through my list and shortened it. I guess I did have some redundancies on there and in those cases picked the most "popular" of them (in the case of the Whale and Basking Shark, I picked the Whale Shark).

I provided the Latin names just in case someone had difficulty searching for the animal, but if no one thinks they're needed I'll get rid of them. Admittedly it does shrink down the list by quite a bit.

And while I'll agree to combining similar animals like a Whale Shark and Basking Shark, there are some animals within the same species/order/family/genus who I think are different from one another they warrant their own spot. Hammerhead, Whale, Cookiecutter, Nurse, Carpet, and Thresher are indeed all sharks, but they're different enough from one another that if I just grouped them all as "shark" I don't think many would understand I mean those kind of unique sharks (and as you said we have Sharpedo to represent our generic shark (most likely the Great White Shark), granted it's combined with a torpedo but still).

And many thing I'm going to list you kind of are going to need to look them up. I've made my list over the years and I found a LOT of strange things to put on my list. I'll filter through them before listing them and as always if you or anyone else feel there's a repeat you can point it out.

I know this topic is risky, but I feel if we work together we can make this list work to give us a better view of the possibilities that Pokemon can go to for inspirations.

Also let's do a vote: Does everyone think Eelektross represents an Electric Eel? As DHR-107 said it's more based on a Lamprey, however I do agree with him it does also have inspiration from Electric Eels (mainly it being an Electric-type). However, that said, it does mean there's no "true" Electric Eel Pokemon as it was combined with another animal. So should the Electric Eel be removed from the list?

I always see Lanturn as a child between an anglerfish and a dolphin, so there is a dolphin pokemon for me :)
I heard that argument before but I feel that's a bit stretching it. But if you feel there's enough evidence that its a Dolphin we can have another vote, though I doubt Dolphin will be removed from the list as its not a "true" Dolphin.

OK so there isn't a Pokemon that directly references a platypus, that is to say it has various parts of other animals/Pokemon (beaver-tailed, duck-billed etc.), however there is Psyduck which does look like, and draws inspiration from one. That said, a platypus would be a good design for a Pokemon.

Please do not mention possible types it can be. That starts falling into speculation which is against the rules.

As I've said, we're just listing the things which aren't Pokemon, that's all. No speculating on what type, Ability, stats, or design it'll have. You can give a quick description of the thing you want listed is and what's special about it, but I think that's as close to the edge as we can get with this topic.

I added the next lists of animals on my list. Since the few lists are short I decided to do a chunk today so added my list of Cephalopod, Mammals, Reptiles, and Crustacean. Now there are a few I'm sure you're wondering about and I'll address right now:

Vampire Squid: Yes, I know Bulbapedia believes that Malamar is possibly based on a Vampire Squid, however I think they only said that since of the squid's name and because it's bioluminescent. I personally don't think it is since they don't look really anything alike.
Amazon River Dolphin: Now there are a lot of dolphins and porpoises, many which I decided to cut from my list since they were too similar to one another. However the Amazon River Dolphin has one very different trait about it: it's pink. I think that's unique enough to give it its own slot. But if anyone disagrees we can put it up to a vote.
(Green) Sea Turtle: Yes, the Tirtouga family is a sea turtle but they're based on prehistoric sea turtles being they're Fossil Pokemon. I'm talking about a living turtle such as a Green Sea Turtle. Once again, if you don't agree we can put it up to a vote.

BTW, I'm always updating the list whenever someone suggests a thing that's not on every time I check this thread and there's a new post. ;)

For avian creatures, we don't have flamingos, hummingbirds, parakeets, woodpeckers, or toucans.

Did anyone mention raccoons? I mean, Zigzagoon and Linoone are tanuki. The Japanese version of the zukan even calls the former the "Tiny Tanuki" Pokemon, but it was mistranslated as a raccoon.

I don't believe there is an elephant pokemon yet.
EDIT: Whoops
Donphan says hi.
Donphan has always been a bit iffy to me as the Elephant representative. While it does have plenty of elephant traits, the main trait about Donphan isn't that its a elephant but more that its a tire. I won't add it onto the list just yet, though if someone things a "True" Elephant should be added we can put it up to a vote.

Do we have a wolf pokemon?
Manectric is the closest one, but it is mostly based on the maned wolf, a different species. There isn't any Pokémon based on an actual wolf. Mightyena is a hyena, which is a completely different species(actually more related to cats than they are to wolfs)

Speaking about mammals, we also don't have a donkey, a koala bear or an hedgehog(at least not one with actual spikes...)

Cool topic, OP. The fish stuff you have listed is waaaaay too detailed though. I agree there are occasional specific things like Hammerhead Shark that are well known enough to warrant a listing, but not nearly as many as you have. I'd reduce the entire water-based list to: Hammerhead Shark, Squid, Plankton, Dolphin, Manatee, Swordfish, Narwhal, Flying Fish. Which are all great suggestions by you.

Yes, an electric pokemon you find in the water named Eelektross should definitely count as an electric eel. I'd also say Carracosta should count as a sea turtle, and less obviously that Chatot should count as a parakeet.

I'd add Cockroaches and Skeletons and Zombies to the list, though would be open to arguments about Cubone. Maybe a Planet pokemon a la Solrock and Lunatone.

We should be careful when looking at the English names of Pokémon. Often, they have nothing to do with the original Japanese names.

I'd add Cockroaches and Skeletons and Zombies to the list, though would be open to arguments about Cubone. Maybe a Planet pokemon a la Solrock and Lunatone.
We kinda do have a Zombie Pokémon: Parasect. It is for all intents and purposes undead.

While we have many simian Pokémon (Primeape, Infernape, the Elemental Monkeys, Darmanitan, etc.), we don't seem to have any prosimian Pokémon (things like lemurs).

Ok, but aren't a ton - maybe even a majority! - of pokemon designs like this? Donphan is an elephant and a tire. Magnezone is a magnet and a UFO. Excadrill is a mole and a drill. Parasect is a hermit crab and a mushroom. Exeggutor is a coconut tree and eggs. Honchcrow is a crow and a mafia dude. Camerupt is a camel and a volcano. Wailord is a whale and a blimp. Etc, etc. It's one of the ways they make pokemon pokemon, and not just cartoon animals.
