Mawile [Koboi] (F)

Nobody trusts Koboi. And with good reason. She doesn't have any regard for the rights of others, and in general thinks torture is fun. Fortunately for all, she...isn't very good at getting her way. With Koboi's Mega form inaccessible to her (she hasn't bonded with Mowtom enough), she is all bark and no bite. Yes, I realize that she has tremendous jaws. Even though she can Mega Evolve, she still won't do harm to anyone Mowtom wants safe. She knows that if she does, bad things will follow.

Ok, let's see which Pokémon would be the best choice. That Aerodactyl's Rock STAB looks pretty dangerous with a Hard Stone, but if I bring Mawile, then Slowbro can threaten it with Fire Blast--or worse, Disable. Furthermore, I'm going to need Mawile later on to reliably beat your Tomohawk.

What items should I use? Odd Keystone on Spiritomb looks like the obvious choice, but although the defense buff is useful, it seems better in singles. Let's try this instead (I need 3 subs for this tbh):

Correct call not opening with Mawile, but your item choices are a bit wonky. Kecleon should basically always be running Everstone, as it gets +2SpDef from it and gets +2 STAB boost on any attack it uses (dependent on Protean shenanigans), which is strictly better than Expert Belt's +2 base damage boost on SE attacks only. Spell Tag on Spiritomb is okay, but unless you were looking to kill Slowbro really really quickly (you aren't) I would run Odd Keystone to make it harder for me to focus fire Spiritomb (not that I'm going to be doing that, but still). Spell Tag is also better if you're not expecting to be hitting super-effectively because it gives a flat damage boost, not a base damage boost.

Moving onto your orders, remember the smashlloyd20 principle: be wary of not doing enough damage. I'm not the biggest fan of Imprison A1. What does this prevent? When I'm ordering second in doubles I won't be Taunting or Protecting, especially with your order set, and Torment can't really come into play as it's only the first round-when ordering second in doubles, your goal is to hit things really really hard. You stated yourself that your goal was to burst down Slowbro so that by the time Mawile comes out it can clean up. This is a perfectly reasonable strategy, BUT you can't go halfway with that kind of thing in doubles; things happen too quickly. Also, Ominous Wind looks out of place. The extra 4 EN is absolutely worth it in doubles, considering how quickly things die. I would have run a base order set of Shadow Ball ~ Shadow Ball ~ Shadow Ball, or maybe Shadow Ball ~ Shadow Claw/Solar Beam ~ Shadow Ball. If you're not using Imprison on Spiritomb A1, it follows that Fake Out on Kecleon is unnecessary too. Fake Out is one of the best doubles moves and I like in theory how you're using it here, but really you're just giving Slowbro a free action to be annoying. I'm going to be bursting down Kecleon exclusively because I can kill it more quickly. In doubles, how many mons you have left tends to be more important than what those mons are because a 2v1 is stacked very very heavily in favor of the 2 (unless the 1 is like Mega Gardevoir).

Okay but actually, these orders certainly could have been more optimized. Mainly, there was absolutely no reason to combo with Spiritomb; Ominous Wind ~ Shadow Ball ~ Ominous Wind kills Slowbro just as effectively, uses much less energy, and gives you another chance at an Ominous Wind proc. Especially with both of my mons locked into useless moves for the round, there's no reason to frontload your damage like that.

Okay, so despite my huge fuck up last round you have to realize this is a terrible round for you. This is because I can artificially create the best scenario in doubles: a 2-on-1. You know I'm going to kill Kecleon really quickly, so your top priority should be to get through the rest of the round with Spiritomb on as much health as possible so you can send out Mawile and fight back from there (because I really have nothing to fight it with). There are a few ways you could do this with subs for 'IF X THEN P/E', but in general this is a poor situation for you. The number one thing you want to avoid is...exactly what I'm doing, honestly. This is part of the ability to think ahead that you have to learn with time. Subbing for D/E with Hypnosis seems a bit strange, frankly; if you want to waste an action just go with P/E, and if you want to deliberate me go with a damaging move. That said, this is a really difficult round for you and the Sneaky Swat thing with Kecleon was smart. This is why 3 APR doubles is kind of a stupid format, particularly in sizes as small as a 3v3.

Honestly the real problem here is having to order first. The only real way you could choke here is by messing up your own first order, but if I want to use, say, Pain Split, then I'm going to have to sub for P/E, Double Team, Taunt, etc. Let's see what I can do here...

Yeah, you're pretty dead. That said, there are a couple ways you could have done this better. Your second sub is smart, but your third sub is actually going to hurt you more than help; that combo does very little for you if it lands and severely restricts your options elsewhere (and I'm going to take advantage of it in a very brutal way). I'd recommend putting that towards Heat Wave instead. Your first sub is generally harmless, but also not terribly helpful. At this point you can't really cover all the possible ways I could kill you in all fairness.

Wrap-Up:

First of all, 3v3 Doubles, particularly 3 APR, is a bit of a borked format. Getting to order first meant that I was going to be in the driver's seat the whole time, particularly in such a small format. That said, here are the mistakes you made that I would say really let me take advantage:

  • Round 1: Expert Belt Kecleon, not following the smashlloyd20 principle (Imprison and to a lesser extent Fake Out), not having a flinch substitution to guarantee Trick Room goes up
  • Round 2: Excessive combo usage
  • Round 3: Hypnosis
  • Round 4: Nothing major
  • Round 5: Play Rough combo A2
As you can see, most of your mistakes came in Round 1. From there it more or less spiraled out of control, which is partially due to the inherent imbalance in this kind of format. That said, you did a good job on second order and this was a huge step up overall from your first battle, especially considering how much more complicated doubles is than singles.
