cool. there was a point over the last year where i was really into dubstep, and it still resounds with me a whole lot. i think part of that is the fact its a totally british thing and its theres something patriotic in it that doesnt usually happen in the uk.

thing with dubstep is over the years its changed a whole lot from what it started as, and the crunky wobbly clubstep stuff doesnt interest me these days. when i first started listening to dubstep, things like:

reso - reso in da mix

stagga - sick as sin

riskotheque - hex

were pretty mind blowing. but that sound gets old pretty fast, and alot of stuff sounds the same.

theres some amazing shit come out of london in this vein though. turn off the lights, get some fat headphones, and try some of these:

ikonika - please

darkster - need you

joker - tron

and then the holy grail of all things dubstep:

burials untrue is probably one of my favourite albums of all time. its like the sound of my country, man.
walking around the streets at night listening to this is just...fuck, everyone should listen to this.

edit: zoro beat me to posting burial, aa :x

Burial is like the best dubstep artist at the moment and a great starting point for dubstep and co.

here's to hope he'll release a new album this year

I was a massive Dubstep fan back in sort of 2006-08 ish but the sound has really gone downhill now its been commercialised, for the most part. The whole womp womp womp womp *vooocaaals* womp womp just doesn't really appeal to me, although it does sound wicked in a club. Just look at the progression of Chase and Status, from underground and cool to popular and cool to popular and shit and then they're now receding to basic shit.

For reference, the Dubstep artists you should probably listen to if you want to get a feel for what the genre was all about are:

Burial (obviously)
Kode 9
N-Type
Digital Mystikz
Caspa
Joker
Benga
Appleblim
MRK1
Plastician (mostly...)
Zomby

and the list goes on..

Hate shoutout goes to Rusko, Scream (not the early stuff, Midnight Request Line was pioneering), Chase and Status (except for some of More than Alot), Emalkay, Jakwob and eespecially Mt. Eden

Its not that im anti commercial for the sake of it, I just hate the way they simplified their sound for popular appeal.

yeah i just got into dub, i was into electro for a while now. i dont know any of the 'good' dubstep artists, but i recommend subscribing to ukf dubstep they have some good tunes.
http://www.youtube.com/user/UKFDubstep there some really good dub in here, you just have to look through all the soupy amateur shit
dub is not dubstep

also the guy who runs ukfdubstep is some kid from my town. thats pretty weird

I really don't listen to any dupstep, but I have listened to Burial, and to echo the sentiments of some others, it's pretty mind-blowing. I'll probably check out this thread for other recs when I'm not posting from a phone.

yeah i'm not into vocal dubstep myself, and as someone said before, wob wob wob wob *vocals* wob wob doesn't really appeal to me. i've never actually heard the more "mainstream" dubstep artists like burial etc since i got into dub pretty recently (through NiT GriT).

I'd much rather listen to house. Electronica is great, but dubstep seems to be lacking something to me, so I'll just stick with deadmau5. But this is amazing
Have you heard 4x4 12 though, I mean half of it is basically dubstep anyway.

Any hoo you guys should check out Untold - Stop What You're Doing (James Blake Remix), its one of my favourites and he's recently hit the big time in a good way, Limit to Your Love is one of the most original things ever to come out of Dubstep.

Dubstep is actually defined more by its snare drums and tempo rather than the wobbles. Early dubstep was akin to a "slowed down D'n'B", even if the wobbles are more notable today.
It took me a while to get into Dubstep, but then you get addicted to the drops.
I love the ambience of dubstep, some examples being Beautiful Lies by B-Complex and this specific remix of a vocal song.

apparently, he has been playing some new material on his live shows, so maybe he will release something this year

Dubstep is not "slowed down D & B". Beautiful Lies is not Dubstep. I think you're getting confused.

Please read what I said more carefully - I never said it actually was, but similar to in qualities. I might be mistaken about Beautiful Lies, I chose it for its ambience but it might fit into drum-and-bass, ambient, trance, or IDM instead.

I did some more research, and it is linked to D'n'B and Grime, although not a subset. Apparently it's linked even more to break core and [UK] garage, but that was from a glimpse of Wikipedia. Also, in combination with the snare drums, dubstep has a characteristic bass line; whether or not this is wobbles is not as important as the general presence. Of course, there are always exceptions with a genre, but that is my understanding of its definition.

"Slowed down d'n'b" is appropriately descriptive, although incorrect. It does describe some bare minimums, including the drum and bass, but lacks the other aspects of dubstep such as its "darkness". "Slowed down" is fairly accurate though, considering that dubstep is apparently defined as under 140 BPM.

This is more or less personal research and understanding, as I do not contribute to the scene much. Feel free to correct me, as this response was in order to clarify what I said.

Edit: I hope this does not come off as condescending. I am writing formally in order to ensure coherence.

Yeah, I guess you've got the general gist, but I'd be careful about getting a understanding of music from Wikipedia.

dubstep gets the SICKEST youtube comments though. eargasm anyone?

I do not get the majority of my understanding from Wikipedia, although it usually fares fine when it comes to genres. I actually used Google's define feature too. Either way, I'll probably follow up with some formal research when I'm not occupied with school.
