Gastly - REJECTED

Status
Not open for further replies.
[OVERVIEW]
  • Good speed and special attack.
  • Weak to anything faster than it.
  • Good revenge killer.
  • Almost guaranteed kill with destiny bond.

[SET]
Name: Scarf Destiny Bond
Move 1: Sludge Bomb / Sludge Wave
Move 2: Shadow Ball
Move 3: Trick / Hidden Power Fighting
Move 4: Destiny Bond
Item: Choice Scarf
Ability: Levitate
Nature: Timid
Evs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

  • Sludge Bomb is gastly's best move, being a STAB attack and also having the 30% chance to poison, gastly can use this to the best of it's ability by either revenge killing or revenge poisoning the opponent.
  • Shadow Ball is a great coverage move, hitting everything bar normal types, shadow ball just like sludge bomb is also a STAB attack which deals big damage to the opponent.
  • Hidden Power Fighting is possibly one of the best coverage moves in the PU tier, hitting things like Pawniard, Caracosta, and Piloswine just to name a few.
  • Trick is an excellent move if used in the right situation, making your opponent trapped into a move that either is not very effective or not effective at all is a great niche that gastly can have.
  • Destiny Bond is a must have on gastly, due to it being very weak in the tier and being KO'd very easily scarfed Destiny Bond can easily get a free KO off an un-expecting opponent.
  • Although Sludge bomb should be used over Sludge wave, sludge wave is still a viable option over sludge bomb, due to not being blocked by the ability bulletproof.
Set Details
========

  • Max speed and special attack EVs are used for making sure gastly can out speed its opponent while also dealing a chunk of damage, Gastly needs to have max speed EVs to make the most of its Choice Scarf otherwise it becomes a death fodder.
  • Timid nature is preferred over others to make sure Gastly gets as much speed as it can. Gastly needs to outspeed most other pokemon or it doesn't get the chance to do anything.
Usage Tips
========

  • Avoid switching gastly in on opponents attacks; unless immune or a weak resistant attack.
  • Due to gastly's main niche to be Destiny Bond, it's best use is to KO powerful Pokemon.
  • Use trick to trap Pokemon that gastly can switch in on, e.g Normal or Fighting type moves.

Team Options
========

  • Gastly places well on most offensive teams, being able to take out powerful hitters that may be a threat to the team.
  • Roselia places well with gastly, this way it can get rid of status' that may stop gastly from being any use on the team.
  • Bulky Pokemon are extremely useful with gastly, being able to take hits for gastly without doing big damage.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

  • Gastly can make some good use out of an Eviolite, being able to take some damage while also returning.
  • Gastly has good use with a life orb, being able to revenge kill pokemon with very high special attack.
Checks and Counters
===================

**Faster Pokemon**: Any Pokemon that is faster than gastly is a threat this is because gastly is a very very weak Pokemon in the PU tier, where almost everything can OHKO it.

**Status users**: Status users can avoid being KO'd by destiny bond, this is a problem due to gastly's held item being choice scarf.

**Steel-Types**: Steel type Pokemon can avoid being damaged by sludge bomb,and also can take little damage at all, e.g Probopass takes little or no damage from Gastly's STAB and can KO it with a Flash Cannon, but it has to watch out for Hidden Power Fighting.

**Taunt**: Pokemon who use taunt can cause big problems for gastly, forcing it to switch out if the user still has the Choice Scarf.

Hi, this analysis isnt meant to antagonise gastly/show it as outclassed or we wouldnt bother giving it one at all. Instead gastly does have a small niche as a choice scarf user (pretty much doing what haunter did w/o as much speed). The set should be:
Gastly @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Shadow Ball
- Sludge Bomb
- Trick / Hidden Power Fighting
- Destiny Bond

Yes, sorry about that I forgot that haunter was NU and not in PU, I realized this as you made this comment actually. Silly mistake, but it was because I was playing NU suspect for a while before I posted the edit.

This is currently lacking in detail which i understand as this is your first analysis. Moves and set details are fine but other areas are lacking.

For the overivew, a good start is to read this (this goes with every other section):
http://www.smogon.com/forums/threads/writing-pu-analyses-required-reading.3534669/
Generally these are some good things to mention:
  • The pokemons role in the PU metagame
  • Pokemon that give it competition and why you would use it over those pokemon
  • How effective the pokemon is in the metagame and why
Looking at other analysis can also be helpful. Here is a good example:
http://www.smogon.com/forums/threads/vanilluxe-qc-2-3-written.3540522/

Another 'rule of thumb' for analysis is to include examples when possible, like you say:
'Bulky Pokemon are extremely useful with gastly, being able to take hits for gastly without doing big damage.'
Like give examples: 'Bulky Pokemon such as x, y, and z' (you do this a bit, but not enough especcially in sections like checks and counters)

For UT you need to say what you think when using gastly in a battle. Like what are you using gastly for and what do you do with it when it is in. Your last line there is incorrect, like if you get gastly in on a normal/fighting attack and trick, they wont be locked into the attack.

Also in TO you should keep the members to ones you would find on gastly's team. I know it sounds obvious, but you mention clerics and bulky pokemon which you wont really find on offensive teams (maybe bulky mons but not clerics). You should also mention teammates who can beat what you listed in checks and counters.

For c&c, like i said early, you should mention examples. So instead of just saying 'steel-types are immune to sludge bomb', you say 'Probopass takes little or no damage from Gastly's STAB and can KO it with a Flash Cannon, but it has to watch out for Hidden Power Fighting'. This should make c&c a lot more detailed and fuller.

hi, I'll try to help (not qc btw)
I understand this is your first analysis, so don't worry! Everyone is new at some point.

Overview:
Mention it faces competition from other Ghost-types
Mention that its ghost-typing allows it to spinblock

Set (moves):
Name some Pokemon that Sludge Bomb hits (eg. tangela)
maybe name a few pokemon that Shadow Ball hits (eg. Grumpig, Kadabra)
Sludge Wave is not really a reason to hit only Bulletproof users (there is only quilladin), maybe say its for extra power

Set (details):
looks good, but give examples of Pokemon that gastly can outspeed

UT:
Trick on pokemon that rely on status moves (eg. lickilicky)
Don't switch it in as any strong attack will KO it
bring it in by a volt switch or u-turn user
be wary of priority attacks

TO:

name some offensive Pokemon
Roselia isn't a cleric... but Grumpig and Lickilicky are...
maybe mention spikes and stealth rock support for Gastly to KO its threats
name bulky Pokemon
Volt switch/u-turn partners

OO:
stallbreaker set

C&C:
Priority
Dark-types can Sucker Punch if Gastly tries to KO it with HP fighting
Name taunt users
Name faster Pokemon
Specially defensive Pokemon maybe?

not QC but ill help

[OVERVIEW]
-definitely beef this up, name scarfers its outclassed by (mr.mime, raichu)
-emphasize how frail it is, and make sure the overall overview is negative, bc gastly is horrible lol

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

-mention sludge wave after sludge bomb and hp fight after trick (basically reorder it to match the set)

Set Details
========

-mention mons you outspeed with timid + scarf

Usage Tips
========

-mention that it can be brought in via a slow uturn or volt switch from mons like pelipper and probopass to get it in safely
-"Use trick to trap Pokemon that gastly can switch in on, e.g Normal or Fighting type moves." - not sure what this means, but just change your wording to be more like "use trick to cripple bulkier pokemon such as lickilicky and roselia"
-mention that it shouldnt stay in on other pokemon that are commonly scarfed (mr.mime, raichu)
-mention that it should be wary of priority from stuff like pawniard and piloswine
-mention that dbond can be great to take out setup sweepers, though its unable to do so vs most speed-boosting mons or mons with priority

Team Options
========
-dont mention clerics, as they dont really have a place on offensive teams (roselia isnt even a cleric)
-mention that gastly appreciates setup sweepers such as ninetales and carracosta that can weakene opposing teams, allowing it to clean up late game
-mention stealth rock, spikes, and tspikes support as they can be helpful to break sturdy & sash as well as weakening foes for easier KOs (mention an example of a mon that is OHKOed or 2HKOed after rocks or something)
-mention that gastly overall fits on teams w/ hazards since it can spinblock
-mention rapid spin / defog support
-mention slow uturn / volt switch users
-mention that slower teams appreciate gastlys ability to revenge kill faster mons
-mention fighting-types that are able to take on dark- and ghost-types

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

-mention taunt along with life orb
-mention sub + disable, but make it obvious that its really frail so it doesnt pull it off very well

Checks and Counters
===================

-dont mention taunt
-dont mention steel-types, as hp fight OHKOes or 2HKOes most
-mention specific types of status and how they affect gastly
-mention dark-types
-mention specially defensive pokemon
-mention priority

The general consensus between the C&C Staff was that this Pokemon doesn't really have a real niche in the tier (outside of beating Anty once) because of it being generally outclassed by Misdreavus as a Rapid Spin blocker because of its bulk and by many Pokemon as a special attacker or Choice Scarf user. If someone finds a role for this thing that is worthy of an analysis they can post in the Analysis discussion thread.

"rip gastly"

anty edit: i suck
