Gen VII: Pokemon Sun and Moon Discussion MKII

Things that irritate me: Olivia clearly has nothing on her left wrist when she's talking before the battle, but clearly has a Z-Ring on said wrist in her battle animation.
Maybe she slipped it on after her catwalk animation? I don't really know... you're right; that's weird. There may be an animation we haven't seen yet where she puts it on with some dialogue or something

From what I read, that just makes it beating up on Gabite and Garchomp even better.
I know, right? The mo'o beating up on the shark god was a really nice reference.
I wasn't particularly interested in Jangmo-o before, but I love the evolutions, and this may be the second time I put a pseudolegendary on my team (in the event that this line is the pseudolegendary). A haka dancing dragon mixed with a Great Maccao and Najarala

Well I was late to post my other thoughts before, but it might as well have been on purpose as we got the same news plus more on top of it:

POKEMON:
Silvally:
Okay, they might as well just call it Arceus jr as this point. Like its gimmick and the Japanese name of its Abilities were subtle enough, but "RKS System" (and "Alpha System" in Spanish)? We've moved out of subtle and right into them shouting "THIS IS A CLONE OF ARCEUS" through a glass pane (we might not hear them, but we can still read their mouth movements). This does make me wonder where it gets its name from. Like I looked up "silva" and its a Portuguese word meaning "forest or woodland" so I doubt that's it. It sort of sounds like "silver" which would match Silvally's color scheme but what about the "-lly" part? Let's see, if we were to connect this with Arceus we could consider Arceus "gold" thus why Silvally is "silver" and "-lly" could maybe come from "folly", as in the trope of man's folly to play (or in this case create) god?
And NO! The Japanese trailer has showed there are multiple "Memory" items (probably 18 of them). Did we really need 18 more items that only one Pokemon can use? You couldn't have shrunk it all into one or two items (like have the item which Silvally would hold and a Key Item which you could use to change the item's type thus Silvally's). For Arceus it was fine because he's Pokemon God, it was the first time they did something like that, and they could be used on other Pokemon like the power-up items. But I don't think that would quite work with these "Memory" items since they work by inserting them into Silvally (and we don't need a third group of power-up items, honestly what we need is for them to maybe buff the original power-up items (and add a Fairy-type one)). Also its odd the English trailer or site hasn't mentoned anything about the "Memory" items.
I already talked about Silvally's desgin a bit though now that we see most/all its forms we have a better idea of what it entails (and yes, Fairy Silvally is pink). As noted though we know see, the inner tail, spikes on it main, and eye colors change. However with all that said it doesn't change that much from base color unlike Arceus. Also looking at the official art I so see that its "horn" wasn't covered up, but rather it had a clasp on to prevent it opening up and letting the head spikes come out. Its mane, inner tail, and "horn" were also grayer as Type: Null, I guess due to its power being restricted/lack of trust.
So it becomes faster (I wonder if it lost that defense boost the mask was said to give), would risk its life to protect its trainer (so I think it would have come with Gladion willingly. And since we see Gladion battling with Silvally and using what I'm assuming are the "Memory" (which are the disks attached to the side of Silvally's head) I'm guessing I was wrong about Gladion giving Type: Null to the player at some point. Though I do wonder then how the player is suppose to get this seemingly one-of-kind Pokemon when someone already owns it), and made to oppose a threat. But with all this Arceus comparison, is this threat the Ultra Beasts... or maybe Arceus?... I'm going to stick with Ultra Beasts, melds better with my theory. As for all the Arceus stuff, well if you were making a super powerful Pokemon to fight interdimensional beasts why not just go all the way and base it on the god Pokemon.
I think it and Mewtwo would probably get along.

Hakamo-o & Kommo-o: Still not getting much on what they're suppose to be, though we get to know what they are like.
Hakamo-o are proud warrior race guys, they go off to train on their own and care nothing for their own health as they show off their lost scales like battle scars. Hey, it would be neat if that was implemented in the game, you know, each time it gets hit it loses some of its scales. And with Pokemon moving onto 3D its perfectly possible. So come on GF, put your designers where your descriptions are at.
And Kommo-o are what typically becomes of proud warrior race guys. No, not crippled and bound to a bed. No, they become strong, sagely like guardians who watch over the newer and young generation (probably also telling them about past battles of their youth and how much harder their generation used to work in the good ol' days). Though Kommo-o does have more interesting stuff about it: explaining the species is training and has shining scales it to fight off a "darkness" and its uppercuts can change landscapes (must be friends with "mountain here, gone tomorrow" Tyranitar). Speaking of which, greatest move is said to be its uppercut... signature move is about banging its scales together (and as someone pointed out, ironic since it has Soundproof. Then again so does the Whismur family and they probably would rather fight their own fist-to-fist).

Ribombee: The silently revealed Cutiefly evolution finally officially revealed... still not that exciting. Infact I'm still getting Ledian vibes from it. That's not a good thing.
Those Pollen Puffs sound interesting, are they going to be an item or a move (or are they going to be like Froakie's frubbles)? They don't like rain, seeing them busy at work means fair weather... yeah, nothing much (unless its getting a Move that clears all weather affects, though I guess Sunny Day would work just the same for their case).
Well, at least its cute.

Steenee & Tsareena: Oh, so Bounsweet isn't a Cherubi clone, its a Petilil clone with a side helping of Gothita!
Steenee is rather an abrupt change. Before we had a fruit with a face and now its this moe girl (sort of reminds me of Gothita). No longer fleeing from its life because it smells so good everyone wants to eat it, its now has a "tomboy-like personality" (their exact words) and attacks by spinning its calyx (get your mind out the gutter, they're talking about its plant stem) and when the opponent is down starts kicking (you'd think they would have attack with its hip but I guess they didn't want to get too fetish-y).
Tsareena I first read as "Tsuneena" and thought "oh know, they're going there". Of course I actually wasn't that far off, it's a high-class Pokemon and sounds a bit stubborn/strict (its yet another Pokemon who will think less of its trainer if they don't do what they want; though once again GF will it glare back at the player if we select it to do a "not very effective" attack?). It now reminds me of Lilligant though a queenly version of her; guess it looks alright. Not much focus is put on its calyx but it has kept up with its kicking and has a signature move: Trop Kick (SO much miss, had you focused on her punching you could have called the attack "Tropical Punch"!). Though oddly from the description it sounds like it would be Fire-type or something to do with heat but it's a pure Grass-type.
Oh, and Tsareena has a Signature Ability... that's a copy of another... that was made this generation. Really? Queen Majesty is a clone of Dazzling? Why? I'd even argue its an odd affect for an Ability named like that. And yes, the two Abilities are worded differently so they might be some differences with how they work, but still I was expecting something else from that name (like something to do with gender).

Alolan Grimer & Alolan Muk: So after the colossal failure that was bringing over Yungoos to hunt Rattata only making it have two pests... the Alolan people didn't learn a thing and did the same thing again for another economic problem!
So Grimer (and I'm also guessing Muk) were brought over to eat the increasing garbage problem due to Alola's increasing population. The garbage was so different from what they were normally use to that it caused them to change. Don't know where the Dark-type came from but they do explain the teeth and claws: some of the new toxins they create harden into a hard crystal and no way has been found to break down the crystals (I'm going to assume this means they can be broken, but you can't use like an acid to melt it). But while Grimer's crystals stay in its mouth, Muk is known to leave those crystals wherever it goes. And yes, they're poisonous. But hey, some good news, they no longer stink... which was probably your only warning you were near one who's now poisoning you with who knows what.
Already talked about Alolan Grimer's design, but Alolan Muk... oh my. It's just so beautiful how garish it looks, I love it! Especially in the game as we see the layers of color moving throughout the body, the default art doesn't do it justice.
Anyway, I have to say the addition of the crystals, while farfetched, was brilliant. Grimer and Muk can now use biting and slashing attacks and maybe even more (Toxic Spikes anyone? Maybe even Stealth Rock?).

ALOLA REGION:
Looks like they put the Kahunas in their own category now that there's a second one. But first the new Trial Captain we've known about since the recent TV trailer.

Trial Captain Ilima: Graduate of the trainer school, Ilima is a Normal-type expert and was revealed by people who got to play Sun & Moon for two hours to be the first Trail Captain. Her trail is the... wait, hold on... she, I mean, he is? Okay, HIS trial is Verdant Cavern (that foliage covered cave they like to keep showing us) and Totem Pokemon is Gumshoos (Sun)/Alolan Raticate (Moon).
He's at the trainer school though from what that 2 hour gameplay session has revealed it takes that long if not longer to get up to that point. Yikes, hopefully that first 2 hour wait is just setting up story and that won't be the case with the other Trial Captains.

Kahuna Olivia: A new Kahuna is revealed, and boy the designers had fun with her.
They didn't reveal much about her in her description but what we were shown in the video tells us a bit more.
  • First, and let's get this out of the way, she's very much being presented as a fanservice character; her battle entry animation being a full body shot of her from behind (focusing on her behind) before striking a sexy turnig pose showing side boob.
  • Second, and now we're actually getting into important stuff, she likes Rock-type Pokemon. This is interesting as only the Trial Captains were shown to have type preference, meanwhile we see Hala using both Tapu Koko (Electric/Fairy) and Crabrawler (Fighting). So either this is just a quirk of Olivia or all Kahuna gave a type preference that's probably not representative of their guardian deities type (since Hala seems more like a Fighting-type guy than a Fairy-type; we already have an Electric-type Trial Captain).
  • Third, she has a Z-Ring. So does this confirm NPCs can also use Z-Moves?
  • Finally she's seen with Mallow so it might be their friends. Both are sorta dressed similarly (or have similar elements) so it could also be that maybe Olivia is Mallow's mentor? Or I could be looking too deep into things and its just that they were doing official Trial Captain-Kahuna business an we run into them. Not sure as the scene is only in Japanese.
Eitherway, Rule 34 a-go.

That's all I got to say for now! I was thinking about commenting on the 2 hour session some people were able to do but the only interesting thing was the Kukui had apparently challenged the Indigo League. Combined with Guzma's comment about both of them failing to become Trial Captains, it makes me wonder what Kukui's full story is. It also answers my question if they're going to bring up how in other regions they have Pokemon Leagues (Gym Leader, Elite Four, etc.), since your character is from Kanto I was curious if at one point one of the characters was going to say "think of the Island Challenge like taking the Pokemon League Challenge, the Trial Captains like facing Gym Leaders but different" or something to that affect. Doesn't mean they will or won't, but now they do have a character who can tell the player that (sure they had Samson Oak though he seems to be met later in the game).

Silvally checks out, I like it. Alolan Muk is actually pretty cool, I may use one! I don't much care for the original but this one is dope.

Jangmo-o lines are awesome and look far better animated, as I expected.

With the rock kahuna and scenery, island 2 is looking to be a craggy mountain environment. I'm hoping early access to Jangmo-o and lots of ground-types.

Forgot to mention a few other things:

1. First town's name was revealed to be "Hauori City" in Japanese. Now I think they mean the town where you get your Start and has the Island Challenge initiation festival. I don't think its your home town as I don't think you have one, your house looks to be built by itself next to a Pokemon Center and Trainer School if I remember correctly. And the next location over looks more like a city than a town.

2. Character info from the Pokemon Sun & Moon anime has been revealed and while nothing outstanding, it mentions for some reason Lillie can't touch Pokemon. Now this could be just an anime thing, but considering the theory that Lillie is an Ultra Beast this could mean Ultra Beast for some reason cannot interact well with Pokemon.

Well, maybe we should leave the analyzing to Pikachu315111. You did a pretty good job there!
No no, well I appreciate the comment everyone has their own views and opinion which are just as valuable as the next. Infact a lot of my information is made of tibits from others who post before I do and pointed things out I might have missed (such as it showing Gladion using Silvally).

Also others have pointed out what Jangmo-o's evolutions are based on and where Silvally's name comes from, which is nice to finally know. :)

Exactly.

Pikachu315111 I forget if Hala has been shown specifically fighting using Tapu Koko or not. It may still be possible he is a Fighting-Type specialist that fights alongside it.

Edit: Also, Team Rocket confirmed to be back and Ash is staying with Kukui. Makes some sense due to the lack of travelling... but still seems kinda odd. Then again this is a pretty huge change in general, so there is that.

"Her skill is extraordinary, as can only be expected from someone chosen to serve as kahuna at such a young age. Yet she still insists that she is just a normal girl.. She uses a Lycanroc."

Olivia may or may not be an ultra beast...
I'm actually more troubled by the fact that Olivia, a seemingly grown-up woman, is being basically referred to as a 'young girl'. Dude, you don't sexualize a young girl like that, that's not ok. Love me some fanservice, but I'm not liking this one. Kukui and his killing obliques did it better. Not really sure how I feel about that pompous new Captain...

LOVING Alolan Muk btw! Its literally a garbage rainbow and that is so freaking cool!

Not sure if it's been mentioned, but the Festival Plaza is a start-menu button and works with streetpass, so you may have access to it from the start.
(IGN mentioned it in a second article that wasn't so much about the gameplay, and noted that the only reason they found out about it was cus someone had to pause for a bathroom break)

'Young' and 'girl' being in two different sentences doesn't mean they're sexualizing a kid, she's an adult just being humble. Stop misreading things.

Speaking of girls, what the hell type of plant is Tsareena based on anyway. Or are they all still meant to be mangosteen?
The hips look like mangosteen fruit sections, so I'd say yes, they're still based off of mangosteens

The Jangomo-o line animates better than it poses.
Clanging Scales is probably a sound-based Dragon move (the purple animation suggests Dragon).
The damaging moves I can think of which lower a single stat by one stage are Hyperspace Fury and Hammer Arm.
They are both 100BP so Clanging Scales could be the same which would be decent with STAB and good accuracy (unlike Dragon Rush).
I think it will get a bunch of stat-lowering moves both because of the design and the fact that Fighting gets a bunch (Superpower, Close Combat, Hammer Arm).
It'll be interesting to see what its niche will be.

Silvally = Silver+ally imo.
Has anyone considered the possibility that the "ally" in its name is just a shortened "alloy"? So it'd be "silver alloy". Would maybe fit with the alchemy theme?

Edit: I'm pretty sure this is correct. This is the definition of alloy: "a metal made by combining two or more metallic elements, especially to give greater strength or resistance to corrosion."

Silvally is a Pokémon made by combining two or more Pokémon elements.

Given its focus on pride, I have a feeling Jangmo-o's line will get Defiant or Competitive as a Hidden Ability.
I was going to say something but didn't want to risk going OT, but with many stat-lowering moves, it'd be interesting to see another, more broken ability...

Cresselia~~

Junichi Masuda likes this!!
OMFG, I find it hilarious that the Pokémon blocking priority are weak to two of the best moves of Talonflame, Flare blitz and u turn.

This is just pure gold. Seriously if you run u turn+ bug z move you already won vs Ttar, heavily dented Slowbro, Kicking Lilligant won't stand a chance and dazzling fish gets u turned hard XD.
Might be worth giving Focus Sash to Tsareena or Bruxish though.
Tsareena looks like a frail Pokemon, defense speaking.

There is also the point of carrying something with Flash Fire to put the Talonflame user into a bad position.

Switch-in Tsareena on Brave Bird or a setup move and it fails. Now the opponent knows you have a Flash Fire user (Houndoom, Heatran, take your pick whatevs) so do they go for the Fire move to hit Tsareena in-case it stays in but risk a Flash Fire boost? Or go for Brave Bird as it will actually do damage to a switch in; but will fail if Tsareena sticks around? Decisions decisions.

But this is all competitive talk so probably best it ends here.

What I am curious about is Clanging Scales. Is it a Special move? Or a Special Move that inflicts physical damage ala-Psyshock in reverse? As so far we have seen Kommo-o use Sky-Uppercut, a physical move. If Clanging Scales is just a special move, will Kommo-o be a mixed offensive pokemon stat-wise?

Heck, U-Turn covers both since both Psychic and Grass are weak to Bug.

Edit: btw, Tsareena had 99hp at level 35 in the japanese video. What is the estimated base HP range on that?
