Grimmsnarl finds itself a spot in Dark-type teams with its excellent capability of setting up while helping with crucial matchups like Dragon.
Rest and Sleep Talk are used together to give Grimmsnarl a form of recovery, allowing Grimmsnarl to set up more consistently. With Rest, Grimmsnarl makes a good sponge to status conditions such as burn and Toxic poison as well. Spirit Break is used to deal significant damage against types such as Dragon and Fighting and in mirror matchups. The Special Attack drop from Spirit Break also allows Grimmsnarl to take on specially offensive Pokemon that it struggles against, such as Duraludon. Prankster complements Grimmsnarl's whole set, as it allows Grimmsnarl to almost always move first, helping Dark-type teams with handling powerful foes such as Dracovish and Dracozolt. However, Sleep Talk rolls often are too unreliable to handle Steel- and Fairy-type Pokemon such as Corviknight, Duraludon, and Gardevoir, so it is recommended to not take any risks against foes that can naturally beat Grimmsnarl. Leftovers grants Grimmsnarl additional passive recovery. A specially defensive EV spread is used because Grimmsnarl's physical stats are already boosted by Bulk Up.
Hydreigon acts as a solid wallbreaker with its excellent coverage and firepower, eliminating threats such as Toxapex, Ferrothorn, Corviknight, and Duraludon for Grimmsnarl, and both Pokemon drastically improve the Dragon-type matchup. Drapion sets up Toxic Spikes for Grimmsnarl, forcing opposing Pokemon to switch more often, thus allowing Grimmsnarl to set up more consistently. With a Choice Scarf set, Drapion also drastically improves the Fairy-type matchup. Tyranitar can set up Stealth Rock, which can negate Focus Sash and Sturdy of foes like Duraludon to prevent them from revenge killing Grimmsnarl. With its good special bulk, Tyranitar can also handle specially offensive Fairy-type threats for Grimmsnarl, such as Ribombee and Gardevoir. Bisharp's part Steel (RH) typing allows it to handle slow Fairy-types such as Clefable and Hatterene. It can also beat opposing RestTalk Grimmsnarl and has a powerful STAB priority in Sucker Punch that helps with taking on fast threats such as Dracovish. Mandibuzz provides Defog support to Grimmsnarl, which allows Grimmsnarl to switch in and set up safer. With Toxic, it can also cripple threats such as Hippowdon that prevent Grimmsnarl from setting up. Mandibuzz also provides a handful of neutralities to types such as Bug and Fighting and a Ground-type immunity for teammates such as Tyranitar and Drapion.
