[SET COMMENTS]
With an incredibly powerful STAB option in Fishious Rend and a respectable typing that allows it to check Pokemon such as Excadrill, Zacian-C, and Zamazenta, Gyarados carves itself a niche as a good late-game cleaner while also restricting defensive counterplay due to Fishious Rend's absurd power. Gyarados is also able to inconvenience Electric-type Pokemon once set-up with moves such as Earthquake, Obstruct, and Will-O-Wisp while also being strong enough that these Pokemon do not enjoy coming in directly even without setup. While Melmetal would normally be able to check Gyarados, Obstruct alongside coverage to hit Steel-types makes that job difficult, and Will-O-Wisp can inconvenience it as well. However, Prankster Melmetal can also inconvenience this set by preventing Gyarados from setting up reliably. U-turn is very helpful for getting out of unfavorable situations while dealing some chip damage, and it allows Gyarados to stay in and inflict status on some Pokemon without getting trapped. Due to the set's passive recovery, Gyarados is incredibly difficult to wear down throughout the course of the game while also beating Imposter Pokemon that transform into it and being immune to status. Gyarados running an Adamant nature still allows it to outspeed every unboosted Pokemon in the metagame after a Shift Gear, so the extra power boost is preferred.
Teammates that can switch into Electric-types such as Eternatus and Fur Coat Melmetal are recommended. Imposter Pokemon such as Wobbuffet are recommended due to their ability to gather information about the opponent's team while also forcing out most offensive Pokemon that can inconvenience Gyarados. This helps in case Pokemon that Gyarados can normally check, such as Zacian-C and Galarian Darmanitan-Z, are running Bolt Beak. Melmetal and Eternatus are great defensive options due to viably running Defog, which helps Gyarados, as it does not enjoy Stealth Rock. In Eternatus's case, it can also run a Magic Bounce set, further deterring Stealth Rock. Special wallbreakers such as Lunala and Kyurem-W enjoy Gyarados's ability to take care of special walls such as Snorlax, and in return, they can take care of Pokemon that wall Gyarados such as Melmetal and Eternatus.
