[OVERVIEW]
* Kingambit is a major threat with its amazing stat spread and the amount of pressure it exerts with Sucker Punch. Defiant also heavily discourages Intimidate, the most common way to impede physical attackers, which is appreciated by common partners such as Ogerpon-W.
* Kingambit's typing does make it a bit reliant on Terastallizing considering many teams carry Fighting-type moves on Pokemon like Chien-Pao and Urshifu-R and its weakness to the primary Intimidate user, Incineroar. However, this is something that can be accounted for in teambuilding , and when Kingambit does get to Terastallize it becomes very difficult to remove and puts major pressure on the opposing team.
* Swords Dance Kingambit depends on Terastallizing even more, requires a lot more support, and it can still struggle to make progress due to the amount of Dark-resistant Pokemon in the metagame and the fact that Follow Me Ogerpon-W, Rage Powder Amoonguss, and Substitute Landorus can take advantage of Sucker Punch. That being said, Swords Dance can also turn one minor misplay or wrong call into a massacre.
* Assault Vest Kingambit's best partner is Latias, which provides Tailwind to offset Kingambit's mediocre Speed tier and beats Pokemon that are difficult matchups for it such as Landorus and Urshifu-R. Swords Dance Kingambit's best partner is Ogerpon-W, as it redirects moves so Kingambit can have an easier time setting up and pressures Urshifu-R, which can stop Kingambit in its tracks otherwise.
[SET]
Bulky Attacker (Kingambit) @ Assault Vest
Ability: Defiant
Level: 50
Tera Type: Fairy
EVs: 252 HP / 116 Atk / 4 Def / 20 SpD / 116 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Kowtow Cleave
- Iron Head
- Low Kick
- Sucker Punch
[SET COMMENTS]
* Assault Vest improves Kingambit's naturally great bulk, making it even harder to remove and importantly letting it be one of the few Pokemon that can comfortably take on Flutter Mane.
* Low Kick is coverage for Incineroar and opposing Kingambit.
* The EVs allow Kingambit to outspeed Landorus when in Tailwind and survive -1 Chien-Pao's Sacred Sword.
* Fairy is the Tera type of choice because it's a great defensive typing across the board and discourages Fighting-type moves such as Urshifu-R's Close Combat and Chien-Pao's Sacred Sword from being used on Kingambit.
[SET]
Swords Dance (Kingambit) @ Black Glasses
Ability: Defiant
Level: 50
Tera Type: Poison / Dark / Dragon
EVs: 244 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def / 4 SpD / 4 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Kowtow Cleave
- Sucker Punch
- Swords Dance
- Protect
* Black Glasses is chosen because it provides a very welcome boost to both offensive moves without any drawbacks.
* Poison is a great defensive typing, having only two weaknesses and notably giving a resistance to Flutter Mane's Dazzling Gleam, but it does make the set even weaker to Substitute Landorus. Tera Dark lets Sucker Punch OHKO almost the entire unresisted metagame after a Swords Dance, but using this does mean giving up the opportunity to use a defensive Tera type, making setting up more difficult. Tera Dragon Kingambit plows through common Fire / Water / Grass cores, making it also a strong option; however, it has a tougher time against Chien-Pao and Flutter Mane, which are staples on many top archetypes.
