Paying the HAX-man: An OU Warstory

Hey, what's up Smogon. This is my first warstory, so if I screw up any of the formatting, that's why. I'll be the first to admit, I'm not the best battler, so I'm naturally toward the bottom of the ladder. I was trying to battle a bit the other night, and I eventually got matched up with StirFrySamurai. This was to be one of my best battles yet on the new PokéLab system.

EDIT: Installed update, finished story. Have fun reading.

-Nicknames are omitted.
-My between-turn thought process is in bolded blue.
-The battle log will be in bolded black.
-The score after each KO will be displayed in bolded green.

And heeeeeeeere we go:

My Team:

StirfrySamurai sent out Azelf (lvl 100 Azelf)!
Galladiator sent out Aerodactyl (lvl 100 Aerodactyl ?)!
Paleo is exerting its Pressure!

Okay, an Azelf. I know that 95% of Azelf sets carry Explosion, but since it has to set up first, and my Aerodactyl is @ Focus Sash anyway, I have a guaranteed set-up turn. I decide to throw out some Stealth Rock.

Begin turn #1
Aerodactyl used Stealth Rock!
Pointed stones float in the air around your foe's team!
Azelf used Psychic!
A critical hit!
Paleo lost 301/302 (99%) of its health!
Paleo hung on using its Focus Sash!

Like I said, Focus Sash is teh win. :) Now I'll try risking Aero' by phazing with Whirlwind.

Begin turn #2
Azelf used Psychic!
Aerodactyl lost 1/302 (0%) of its health!
Aerodactyl fainted!

5-6 StirfrySamurai

Crap. Well, it was worth a try. Time to start the Baton Pass chain...

Galladiator sent out Umbreon (lvl 100 Umbreon ?)!

I only use Umbreon because it can BP Mean Look, which helps Gallade and Lapras, my main sweepers, tremendously. Of course, like I mentioned, Azelf usually sets up SR here, so after ML I'll have to Pass it to my Rapid Spinner, Starmie.

Begin turn #3
Azelf used Stealth Rock!
Pointed stones float in the air around your foe's team!
Umbreon used Mean Look!
Azelf was trapped!

That went exactly as planned. Now to pass to Starmie.

Begin turn #4
Azelf used Taunt!
Umbreon fell for the taunt!
Umbreon can't use Baton Pass after the taunt!

...Damn. Umbreon doesn't have an attack to its name, so I'll have to take my chances hard-switching Starmie into an Explosion.

Begin turn #5
Galladiator withdrew Umbreon!
Galladiator sent out Starmie (lvl 100 Starmie)!
Pointed stones dug into Starmie!
Starmie lost 40/324 (12%) of its health!
Azelf used Psychic!
It's not very effective...
Starmie lost 90/324 (27%) of its health!
Starmie's Leftovers restored its health a little!
Starmie regained 20/324 (6%) of its health!

Phew. That almost really sucked. Time to negate the Rocks. Go, Starmie! Do your thing!

Begin turn #6
Starmie used Rapid Spin!
Azelf lost 4% of its health!
Starmie blew away the Stealth Rock!
Azelf used Psychic!
It's not very effective...
Starmie lost 90/324 (27%) of its health!
Starmie's special defence was lowered!
Starmie's Leftovers restored its health a little!
Starmie regained 20/324 (6%) of its health!

Odd, I thought Azelf would try an Explosion there. Oh, well. Starmie shrugs off the Psychic hit, and Leftovers restore a bit more green to its bar. Now to go on the offensive.

Begin turn #7
Starmie used Surf!
Azelf lost 64% of its health!
Azelf used Taunt!
Starmie fell for the taunt!
Starmie's Leftovers restored its health a little!
Starmie regained 20/324 (6%) of its health!

A nice hit by Surf nearly sends Azelf to its doom. He'll probably send in something to absorb the next Surf, but Thunderbolt won't do much either way. Let's do it.

Begin turn #8
Starmie used Surf!
Azelf lost 31% of its health!
Azelf fainted!
Starmie's Leftovers restored its health a little!
Starmie regained 20/324 (6%) of its health!

5-5 Tie

Well, that was certainly unexpected. Samurai sacrifices his Azelf to give the next 'mon a free switch-in. Fine by me as long as it isn't a...

StirfrySamurai sent out Genger (lvl 100 Gengar ?)!
Pointed stones dug into Gengar!
Gengar lost 12% of its health!

Bleh. Well, at least he's late on the Spin-blocking aspect, but there's still the threat of a Shadow Ball. Starmie, you did your best. Now Surf and do what you can!

Begin turn #9
Starmie used Surf!
A critical hit!
Gengar lost 87% of its health!
Gengar fainted!
Starmie's taunt wore off!
Starmie's Leftovers restored its health a little!
Starmie regained 20/324 (6%) of its health!

5-4 Galladiator

Holy Arceus! I never thought a Gengar could go down so easily. Yes, HAX played a role in that, so it's a tainted victory. But still...a Starmie OHKOing a Stealth-Rocked Gengar? Who'd have thought it?

StirfrySamurai sent out Snorlax (lvl 100 Snorlax ?)!
Pointed stones dug into Snorlax!
Snorlax lost 12% of its health!

Ah, a Snorlax. The best special wall in the metagame not named Blissey. I get the feeling that this thing will be next to impossible to take down.

Begin turn #10
Starmie used Surf!
Snorlax lost 18% of its health!
Snorlax used Crunch!
It's super effective!
Starmie lost 204/324 (62%) of its health!
Starmie fainted!

4-4 Tie

And once again the enemy proves me right. Starmie does zip to the 'Lax, and in return is taken out by a Crunch. But I have a possible idea.

Galladiator sent out Umbreon (lvl 100 Umbreon ?)!

I'll try the BP chain again, this time to Gallade. Although Snorlax can sponge a Lapras Hydro Pump or a Blaziken Flamethrower, it won't stand a chance against a Choiced Close Combat.

Begin turn #11
StirfrySamurai withdrew Snorlax!
StirfrySamurai sent out Breloom (lvl 100 Breloom ?)!
Pointed stones dug into Breloom!
Breloom lost 6% of its health!
Umbreon used Mean Look!
Breloom was trapped!
Breloom was badly poisoned!

So much for that.

Begin turn #12
Umbreon used Baton Pass!
Galladiator sent out Gallade (lvl 100 Gallade ?)!
Breloom used Spore!
Gallade fell asleep!
Breloom's Poison Heal restored health!
Breloom regained 6% of its health!

Good news? Gallade gets in relatively safely. Bad news? Breloom Spores on the Pass, causing Gallade to fall asleep.

Begin turn #13
Gallade is fast asleep.
Breloom used Leech Seed!
Gallade was seeded!
Gallade's health was sapped by Leech Seed!
Gallade lost 34/278 (12%) of its health!

He adds on more damage with Leech Seed while Gallade snoozes. Time to junk another turn...

Begin turn #14
Gallade woke up!
Gallade used Trick!
Gallade obtained Toxic Orb!
Breloom obtained Choice Band!
Breloom used Substitute!
Breloom lost 25% of its health!
Breloom made a substitute!
Gallade's health was sapped by Leech Seed!
Gallade lost 34/278 (12%) of its health!
Breloom regained 10% of its health!
Gallade was badly poisoned!
Breloom's Poison Heal restored health!
Breloom regained 12% of its health!

As Homer Simpson would say, "D'OH!"

Gallade is poisoned and sets up Breloom behind a semi-permanent Sub. This sucks. Well, time to Psycho Cut and hope for the best...

Begin turn #15
Gallade used Trick!
But it failed!
Breloom used Substitute!
But it failed!
Gallade's health was sapped by Leech Seed!
Gallade lost 34/278 (12%) of its health!
Breloom regained 2% of its health!
Gallade is hurt by poison!
Gallade lost 17/278 (6%) of its health!

Double "D'oh!" I hit the wrong button and Gallade pays the price in the form of 18% LS and poison damage.

Begin turn #16
Gallade used Psycho Cut!
It's super effective!
Breloom's substitute took damage for it!
Breloom's substitute faded!
Breloom used Substitute!
Breloom lost 25% of its health!
Breloom made a substitute!
Gallade's health was sapped by Leech Seed!
Gallade lost 34/278 (12%) of its health!
Breloom regained 10% of its health!
Gallade is hurt by poison!
Gallade lost 34/278 (12%) of its health!
Breloom's Poison Heal restored health!
Breloom regained 12% of its health!

Bleh. I'm regretting that Trick in the beginning.

Begin turn #17
Gallade used Psycho Cut!
It's super effective!
Breloom's substitute took damage for it!
Breloom's substitute faded!
Breloom used Substitute!
Breloom lost 25% of its health!

Gallade is hurt by poison!
Gallade lost 53/278 (18%) of its health!
Breloom's Poison Heal restored health!
Breloom regained 12% of its health!

This is REALLY starting to suck. Poison and Leech Seed damage is really adding up now, and Gallade has only one more turn left. Time to sac it in hopes of maybe breaking another Sub.

Begin turn #18
Gallade used Psycho Cut!
It's super effective!
Breloom's substitute took damage for it!
Breloom's substitute faded!
Breloom used Substitute!
Breloom lost 25% of its health!

Gallade lost 5/278 (1%) of its health!
Gallade fainted!
Breloom regained 10% of its health!
Breloom's Poison Heal restored health!
Breloom regained 12% of its health!

3-4 StirfrySamurai

Well, time for the trick up my other sleeve.

Galladiator sent out Blaziken (lvl 100 Blaziken ?)!

This is where it gets interesting. My Blaziken is fairly bulky, as it's intended to take a hit or two while Baton Passing a Liechi boost, an Agility, and hopefully a Substitute. However, it also has Flamethrower to avoid having to switch out of a Taunt. Against my better judgement, I try an attack.

Begin turn #19
StirfrySamurai withdrew Breloom!
StirfrySamurai sent out Starmie (lvl 100 Starmie)!
Pointed stones dug into Starmie!
Starmie lost 12% of its health!
Blaziken used Flamethrower!
It's not very effective...
Starmie lost 20% of its health!
Starmie's Leftovers restored its health a little!
Starmie regained 6% of its health!

Okay, as I should have expected, he sends in Starmie to sponge the Flamethrower. But I have a secret weapon to completely destroy this thing.

Begin turn #20
Galladiator withdrew Blaziken!
Galladiator sent out Lapras (lvl 100 Lapras ?)!
Starmie used Surf!
Starmie's Leftovers restored its health a little!
Starmie regained 6% of its health!

Booyah. Water Absorb FTW. Now for a one-shot TB.

Begin turn #21
Starmie used Thunderbolt!
A critical hit!
It's super effective!
Lapras lost 296/415 (71%) of its health!
Lapras used Thunderbolt!
It's super effective!
Starmie lost 79% of its health!
Starmie fainted!

3-3 Tie

As expected, Lapras nets a kill with T-bolt. What's next?

StirfrySamurai sent out Magnezone (lvl 100 Magnezone)!
Pointed stones dug into Magnezone!
Magnezone lost 6% of its health!

...This could be a problem. But Blaziken should handle the job nicely, after a Mean Look.

Begin turn #22
Galladiator withdrew Lapras!
Galladiator sent out Umbreon (lvl 100 Umbreon ?)!
Magnezone used Thunderbolt!
Umbreon lost 123/394 (31%) of its health!

Sweetness. Let's ML it.

Begin turn #23
Magnezone used Thunderbolt!
Umbreon lost 111/394 (28%) of its health!
Umbreon used Mean Look!
Magnezone was trapped!

Umbreon loses a chunk of green, but survives to Mean Look. I'm good for the Pass, since even with a crit Umbreon isn't in KO range from Thunderbolt.

Begin turn #24
Magnezone used Thunderbolt!
Umbreon lost 112/394 (28%) of its health!
Umbreon is paralysed! It may be unable to move!
Magnezone is paralysed! It may be unable to move!
Umbreon's Synchronize activated!
Umbreon used Baton Pass!
Galladiator sent out Blaziken (lvl 100 Blaziken ?)!

I passed to Blaziken because of a sure KO with Flamethrower. Time to shift the momentum.

Begin turn #25
Blaziken used Flamethrower!
It's super effective!
Magnezone lost 93% of its health!
Magnezone fainted!

3-2 Galladiator

Nice. Now he should send in Breloom to try to Spore Blaziken.

StirfrySamurai sent out Breloom (lvl 100 Breloom ?)!
Pointed stones dug into Breloom!
Breloom lost 6% of its health!

Bingo. Since Blaziken is faster than 'Loom, it should have no trouble with a Flamethrower KO.

Begin turn #26
Blaziken used Flamethrower!
It's super effective!
Breloom lost 87% of its health!
Breloom fainted!

3-1 Galladiator

This is it. Time for the endgame, and I know what's next.

StirfrySamurai sent out Snorlax (lvl 100 Snorlax ?)!
Pointed stones dug into Snorlax!
Snorlax lost 12% of its health!

Well, Blaziken, you had a good run. He'll try an Earthquake, which 'Ken will have to take in order to do ANY damage.

Begin turn #27
Blaziken used Flamethrower!
Snorlax lost 10% of its health!
Snorlax used Earthquake!
It's super effective!
Blaziken lost 290/304 (95%) of its health!
Blaziken's Liechi Berry raised its attack!

Wow. I'm surprised a.) that there's no Leftovers recovery (yeah, I know, I should have spotted that earlier), and b.) that Blaziken actually survived an obviously Choice Banded EQ from a Snorlax. I'm glad I invested those EVs in Defense.

Begin turn #28
Blaziken used Flamethrower!
Snorlax lost 16% of its health!
Snorlax used Earthquake!
It's super effective!
Blaziken lost 14/304 (4%) of its health!
Blaziken fainted!

2-1 Galladiator

Ignis finally goes down, but not before severely damaging his 'Lax.

Galladiator sent out Umbreon (lvl 100 Umbreon ?)!

Eh, it'll die anyway. Better now than having it as my last 'Mon. I'll try a Wish, just in case the impossible happens.

Begin turn #29
Snorlax used Earthquake!
Umbreon lost 48/394 (12%) of its health!
Umbreon fainted!

1-1 Tie

As expected, Umbreon goes down without a fight. Time for the last act!

Galladiator sent out Lapras (lvl 100 Lapras ?)!

It comes down to a Hydro Pump. If it does enough, I've got the win. If not, gg Samurai.

Begin turn #30
Lapras used Hydro Pump!
Lapras's attack missed Snorlax!
Snorlax used Earthquake!
Lapras lost 119/415 (28%) of its health!
Lapras fainted!

Ah, well. HAX giveth, HAX taketh away. It's only fair that it screws me over after helping Starmie OHKO Gengar earlier. GG StirfrySamurai!

StirfrySamurai wins, 0-1

@Galladiator: gg
@StirfrySamurai: gg

PROPS:
-SS, for an epic match.
-Starmie, for the OHKO on Gengar.
-Blaziken, for almost sweeping the rest of SS's team.
-Lapras, for being so beast.
-You all, for reading this.
-HAX, for at least being fair.

SLOPS:
-Me, for losing by a thread.
-Gallade, for doing almost nothing.
-Lapras, for missing the Hydro Pump to lose the battle.
-HAX, for sticking its foot in the door.

SS's Team:

Aerodactyl is a very unique and unexpected phazer!

All kidding aside, this may not have been the best battle to make into a warstory. I didn't see any notably excellent predictions or displays of solid metagame knowledge, but this is all quite understandable taking into consideration the fact that this was your first warstory. The formatting was sufficient, however, but better luck next time.

I'm sorry everyone, but any battle in which a Lapras is the starring role is a good one to warstory. I must admit there are probably better ones, but at least props to you for using an original team. The only question I have is why there is not one fighting-type move (read: superpower, especially on a mixed/special set) on your Blaziken?
Also, sprites are super, for future reference.

Stopped after Whirlwind on Aerodactyl.
Yeah, me too. Then I decided to give the benefit of the doubt.
Then watched you Trick Breloom and proceed to let Gallade stay in to die while you could have switched out of Leech Seed for free since Breloom was locked into Sub.

As for the warstory itself, I didn't mind the formatting, and the way you colour-coded it made it easy to follow. Sprites are always nice though, and perhaps a little more insight into what you're thinking never hurt.

Not bad for a first try, and I hope you'll write a second, but next time pick a better battle for sure.

yeah I pretty much stopped after Whirlwind. I kept going though and then was pretty guttered that you ran a Liechi Berry on Blaziken with no Fighting STAB. Better battle next time.

You need to learn to switch out your pokemon. Breloom was locked into Substitute, you had him at your mercy.

It was a 'meh' warstory as far as they go, but I look forward to you warstorying a better battle. Good luck! Get it, good 'luck'... /badjoke

Lost interest after Whirlwind. Best thing you should've done was either Taunt Azelf, or even break its Sash, Then stopped reading two turns later, when you attempted to Baton Pass, forgetting Azelf had Taunt. Commentary was also sort of lacking.
Better luck next time.

Whirlwind Aero?
Trying to set up on Azelf when it has taunt?

Lots of misplays here, not a very good warstory.

Hey, give me a break guys, I did say I'm a terrible battler. And besides, this was my best and closest battle yet.

Oh, and thanks for the advice from all those that aren't hating.

I gave a little more chance . . . stopped reading after Azelf stayed in to Psychic and Taunt Starmie . . . ie. you're not the only battler in this warstory that needs some work on basic strategy.

[10:54:59] <ILoveLiza> When he uses trick is hilarious
[10:55:13] <+breloom> i dont want to keep reading
[10:55:21] <ILoveLiza> don't

[10:55:28] <+breloom> a.k.a. turn 4
[10:55:33] <ILoveLiza> Ok read until the trick
[10:55:40] <ILoveLiza> then stop like I did
[10:55:40] <+breloom> ok
[10:55:43] <DoomVM> i love watching bad movies
[10:55:56] <DoomVM> so maybe badwarstories will be similar
[10:56:02] <+breloom> hahaha
[10:56:07] <+breloom> hahahahahahahahahahahaha
[10:56:16] <ILoveLiza> SEE

This wasn't that good. It wasn't bad for a first, but I would suggest adding more commentary and picking a batter battle. Fewer misplays, such as the Breloom incident against Gallade, would have been better.

4/10, though I look forward to any future war stories

The only good thing about this warstory was it's format. And even at that, it lacked sprites which made it hell to follow.

Boundless misplays, almost every 2 turns had at least 1.

And if you're a terrible battler, maybe you shouldn't make warstories. But then again, I'm a hypocrite on that one.

For a first warstory, it was average. Battle was extremely forgettable, but the formatting is nice. Add in some sprites and find a better battle and you've got yourself a good warstory!

Thanks for the read and I look forward to your second one!

Formatting was great, very easy to follow. There was a lot of mistakes, by both sides, but I have to say that you wrote it up well, and at least acknowledged your errors. Looking forward to your next one.

Nice formatting, but I stopped after he Psychic'd when you still had Umbreon in. Then I thought about the off chance that it was an actual prediction, but was disappointed throughout the warstory.

The key to a superb war story is a superb battle. No one wants to read about a battle which is too one sided or where there is a abundance of miss clicks and poorly thought out move choices. Next time you compose a war story, make sure that you have the raw material to back it up. Secondly, you need to explain yourself better after each turn. Your descriptions lack information and reasoning as your stating the absolute oblivious. Instead, look to explain yourself more clearly and go through your thought pattern during the battle. Also, try and incorporate more suspense and excitement during the coarse of the battle.

Rating: 2.5/10

I liked the formatting, sorta liked the comments, and the battle...

Well, I wouldn't have picked this battle for a warstory. That's basically all I want you to know. Like ButteredToast said, "The key to a superb war story is a superb battle." This battle contained too many little mistakes, little mistakes which made the warstory collapse.

Don't worry though, I'll be looking out for your next warstory. Hopefully it'll be on a better battle.

Good luck in your future battles, and have fun!

Rating: 4.2/10

Nice formatting, but I stopped after he Psychic'd when you still had Umbreon in. Then I thought about the off chance that it was an actual prediction, but was disappointed throughout the warstory.

This also goes for all the other "stopped reading after..." comments, how did you guys make it past the pictures?

Since I didn't get any farther 10/10. The Intro is flawless!
