Prom discussion

the actual prom event is okay, prom weekend is what's up. drinking + partying > grinding at the hotel your prom's at.

Here in Japan, the kids don't get prom... or school dances at all... which is a real shame, because Japanese society could go for a healthy injection of get-over-it-touching-the-other-gender-is-ok.

...also Hawaii is one of 2 states in the US that has girl's wrestling, and I went to prom with my co-captain (the girl's team's captain)... lol

...don't worry, she was really cute. In Hawaii, even small asian girls wrestle.

Though in our case, it was kind of a holy-shit-we-were-both-so-caught-up-with-wrestling-and-judo-season-that-we-forgot-to-ask-anyone-to-prom-let's-go-together. lol

^oh yeah, in Hawaii, Judo is a state sport, just like football or baseball. Well, a good percentage of the participants also wrestle.

Prom was scheduled the week after the Judo State Championship tournament, which we were relieved about since it meant not having to cut weight during prom. lol

If I recall correctly, Junior function fell between the two seasons which was also lucky.

But anyways. I was thinking someone would make this thread. My senior prom is May 19th. And all I've got to say is...jesus fuck my wallet...

I didn't think I was going to go to prom. Seemed a little silly, and I always hated homecoming and shit so why bother, right? But figured...it's the experience, right? Senior prom, etc. So I asked one of my best friends from a different school, but her parents wouldn't let her go to two proms. So I figured again I wouldn't go after that, especially since I didn't want to ask the other girl I would have liked to go with as I thought she might feel bad for being asked second (is that weird? I had talked to her a while ago about the first girl I asked, so she knew all about that. I wanted to ask her, but was absolutely terrified she might feel as if she was a second choice, or that I cared more about going to Prom than I did about her, which is false.) But then I figured out how to ask her while bypassing all of that, and she said yes!

And honestly, now I'm incredibly excited for it! Managed to be a part of a really fun group, and have a really amazing date to spend it with. So I can't wait, and will post itt when it happens!

But jesus fuck my wallet...40 for flowers for the first girl (while she said no, she has the flowers on her dining table, and I'm still happy about that!), 50 for the second, 55 for my ticket, 55 for her ticket, 58 for my seat in the overly expensive vehicle that is transporting me to prom, and 58 for hers. In 316 dollars, and I still have to buy a suit! Uh oh...

lol shit your prom is expensive ahahaha

mine was like $40 for tickets, $20 for dinner, and $20 for corsage :>

and no I was not being hella cheap, my date insisted that she pay for something .-.

Postprom and the weekend after prom is much better than the actual prom itself because you can dick around and do whatever you want. Prom itself is too formal to really do anything, and because of society nowadays where girls and guys just grind all day at dances, it really dumbs down the formality of it all. There's very little slow dancing and conversing, just grinding for 3-4 hours.

And bad food.

You only graduate once from high school, so why not? I did spend some money but it was worth it.

Yeah, prom kind of sucked but was fun. The food sucked but hanging out with everyone wearing fancy clothes and at a fancy hotel was fun. Was also fun to walk around with my girlfriend (we're married now) looking fine and laughing at the jealous people. In particular the eye daggers this girl I crushed on the year before was shooting at my wife were funny. And there was this guy who hung out with some of the same people as me but was always a dick to me. He was staring at my wife and his date got so mad. Then they turned the music on and people just grinded for four hours. Which is really lame. I've never understood why people would want to do that in public. Either you've already had sex with your date before and there isn't really any tension or you haven't and you really shouldn't be over dramatic because your first time with a new partner at that age is going to SUCK. So we left with a big group of friends and brought some people who we never hung out with before. They were rave dancing with glow sticks and shit which was incredibly dorky but made them the least lame dancers there.

So I would say go, hang out with people. If you happen to live somewhere where dancing doesn't mean dryhumping: dance. But if you don't: skip the dancing and go to an after party with your best friends. And if you get laid: great. But if not: that's good too. But if you obsess over it you will ruin your night.

Oh, I forgot to add: we knew the food was going to suck so we went out to Outback with some friends. The waiter saw a group of high school kids and so treated us like shit so we stiffed him. Another server saw he wasnt helping us and so got us refills and what not so we gave her 20% of our bill if she promised not to split it with the guy. The waiter was an idiot because my friend likes to think he is a big timer and so will make sure people see him leaving huge tips.

It can get expensive but it's just for a good time. My girlfriend and I split most of the costs so it wasn't that bad. I paid for dinner and half of her ticket and we split the corsage and limo costs. Usually I dislike dances and people just as much as every other introverted teenager who spends their time on playing Pokemon, but you get what you put into it. If you go in hating it, you'll hate it even more, but if try to make the best of it, you'll have a great time!

Some of these posts seem really...angsty for something that's supposed to be a fun event.

Yeah, prom is expensive as shit, but I'm sure you'll have a blast!

Sounds like you got a good group to go with too, which should make it all the better.

I went to mine, it was fucking shit, bought a new suit for like 400 dollars, doesn't fit me anymore cause I grew like 4 inches since then, 40 dollar ticket to get in and took a limo to get there which cost like 50 bucks...just save your money and spend it on drinks for the after party, srsly.

Aww, I remember going to prom. It wasn't even my own prom. I had dropped out of my own high school by the time their prom happened. But I got invited (kind of) to go to my other friend's prom. One of my best friends at the time approached me about a mutual friend who didn't have a date to his prom and he wanted one, so she asked me if I was willing to go with him as friends, so I did.

We all went as a group. It wasn't an overly elaborate affair or anything. No long red carpets or limos or anything. It was held in a corporate office building thing. It was somewhat awkward at times as I was quite shy and my date was also quite shy, so we didn't talk much and fumbled around and stuff. But it was cool. We won some prizes and stuff. I think we got one for being old fashioned, lol. I had a dress with a train in the back, and his tux was literally an antique. And when we did dance (like once) we did the waltz because grinding is stupid. Also because I don't think anyone could grind to Ella Fitzgerald.

But yeah. Even though I dreaded going beforehand, it actually turned out to be quite nice once I got over the initial scare of the possible huge crowds and stuff along those lines.

Didn't go to my prom. The next day everyone came back saying how much it sucked and how there was nothing to do. Everyone was really excited for the after parties and ended up leaving early because of that.

I think there's one thing to keep in mind... you're almost guaranteed to not really care about whether you did or didn't go to prom by the time you hit 25 (if not earlier), unless you ended up marrying your prom date or something. There are plenty of reasons for wanting to go, just like there are plenty of reasons to avoid going (the ridiculous cost for a single night being a major one), and your choice suggests shit all about your private life. Prom is almost never a life-changing experience.

Anyway, enough of that PSA. I went to prom about 500 years ago, it wasn't awful but at the same time it definitely wasn't worth the money investment. The after-parties were something I thought were fun at the time but in retrospect were also kind of stupid, but it's high school and making stupid decisions is sort of expected.

Heh, this reminds me of myself back in high school. For whatever reason, I was socially angsty and REALLY didn't want to go to prom, even though my friends kept on telling me otherwise. In the end, I did end up buying a ticket and I had a blast. My preconceptions of prom were essentially that of a popularity contest (and I suspect that's what others who are against prom are thinking), and it's "not right for them." For one, prom is just another chance to hang out with your friends and have a good time, except in greater swag. Seriously, how often does a chance to dress up like a fucking boss come along, and dance with the dames come along? The food was great (I don't know wtf people were serving at your guys' proms, our food was amazing), and I enjoyed just hanging out with my friends (and also see a few awkward moments heh). I would gladly shell out another 200 dollars to go to prom (except that'd be awkward right now since I'm old).

The kicker is the after party though. Our school, trying to deter our year from doing stupid shit, organized our own huge after party in our gym, and hired dealers from a casino, had an arcade on the side, a kareoke, and a bunch of other stuff, and had free swag and food and drinks just rolling around. In the end, they gave out more than 20k dollars in prize (laptops, TVs, and other swag).

Seriously, I encourage everyone to go; it may seem like a waste of time, but prom (and high school) happens once in your life; it's probably best if you take advantage of it.

So you grew from 5'2 to 5'6...? :D

wore a dress to my prom, didn't get in, went on to have the best night of my life
solid performance

we didnt have a prom per se it was called "leavers ball". whole thing was free, like food and drinks and stuff, everyone got hammered and it was fucking great. snuck my then girlfriend in who was in the year below so pretty much everyone i wanted to be there was there.

left for malaga the next morning WOO puked on the plane

I went too an all boys school, so consequently, I did not go, mostly because; I had no-one to go with (no friends/girls), I hate dancing and I mostly just sit in corners and eat all the food at parties and other such events.

So, on Monday a senior girl who I've known for a while asked me out to our high school's prom, so yeah, that's basically why I decided to make this thread.

So, here you'll be able to talk about your prom experience, your future plans for attending prom, how fucking expensive prom is (it's true), or whatever. If it has something to do with prom, feel free to discuss.
Good job dude!! My prom was amazing. And the afterpart is pretty fun.

Me and date split the bid

Uhh yeah I'm gonna go ahead and add "NSFW" to the thread title because looking through some of the posts here, this thread doesn't look very safe for work anymore...

I used to act the same way about school dances, just thinking it was a massive popularity contest. But then when I got asked to prom, I realized it's not a popularity contest. Really changed how I look at things.
