Project Pokemon Matchmaking v2 [Closed]

Manaphy @ Wacan Berry
Ability: Hydration
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Tail Glow
- Scald
- Ice Beam
- Energy Ball

Manaphy forms a nice core with Lando-T as it can defeat Pokemon that troubles Lando such as Mega Slowbro, Chesnaught, Gliscor and Mega Sableye. Wacan Berry also allows it to lure and KO Electrics, which can be problematic to the core otherwise. Manaphy also appreciates Lando weakening Pokemon like Clefable, Chansey and Ferrothorn to make its job easier.

Charizard @ Charizardite X
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Flare Blitz
- Dragon Claw
- Roost

Landorus-therian checks opposing ground types for Charizard X, but more importantly lures in Hippowdon and Slowbro and weakens them, setting Zard up to put in work. In return, Zard can check electric types for Lando-T, particularly Rotom-Wash. It also checks Skarmory and bulky grass types such as Tangrowth and Chesnaught which can wall Lando. These two provide immense offensive pressure together, although weaknesses to fast Dragons and Fairies such as Latios and Mega Diancie are compounded

Also Quagsire

Sorry for the delay this week. I've been pretty busy. Regardless, not many nominations this week, so only 2 winners again.

The Winners:

Random Passerby's Manaphy

bludz's Mega-Charizard-X
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Week 33 - All-Out Attacker
Mega-Metagross

Metagross-Mega @ Metagrossite
Ability: Clear Body
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Meteor Mash
- Zen Headbutt
- Hammer Arm
- Pursuit

Breloom @ Life Orb
Ability: Technician
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Spore
- Bullet Seed
- Mach Punch
- Swords Dance

Given how Metagross is lacking Ice Punch, it needs a teammate that can tangle with bulky Ground types. Breloom does a fair job of this, being able to threaten with Technician boosted Bullet Seed. Access to priority can help against targets that Metagross can't outrun, as well. Breloom can also neutralize targets that neither member can deal with, such as Skarmory, thanks to Spore. In return Metagross can Pursuit trap Psychic types like Latios who give Breloom trouble, while also dealing with things like Mega Venusaur and Amoongus.

lol Manaphy again

Manaphy @ Leftovers
Ability: Hydration
EVs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Tail Glow
- Scald
- Energy Ball
- Hidden Power Fire / Ice Beam

Manaphy comes in easily on Steel-types, Water-types and Mega Sableye which wall Mega Metagross. It can then pressure them with Tail Glow and a coverage move; Scald hits Ground-types such as Hippowdon and Landorus-T, Energy Ball for Water-types. Hidden Power Fire can be used to lure Ferrothorn, which is beneficial for a Metagross clean-up. However, Ice Beam can be used to OHKO Garchomp and take out Dragon-types. Mega Metagross returns the favour by checking Mega Altaria, Mega Venusaur and Kyurem-B while also being able to Pursuit Trap Lati@s, which is often used to check Ice Beam-less Manaphy.

Thundurus @ Life Orb
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Thunderbolt
- Hidden Power [Ice]
- Focus Blast
- Thunder Wave

There are honestly a bunch of routes you can take, like Grass Knot or Nasty Plot, all-out attacker without Thunder Wave, etc... but Thundurus is one of Mega Metagross' best partners with most sets so I've just put the standard one. It defeats Slowbro and other bulky waters such as Suicune which Metagross is annoyed by, and also checks Mega Scizor and Skarmory. T-Wave helps with stuff like Talonflame, Mega Lopunny and Rain sweepers. Metagross Pursuit traps Latis which are one of the best offensive checks to Thundurus, while also beating stuff like Clefable.

Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 252 Spe / 4 Def
IVs: 0 Atk
Modest Nature
- Draco Meteor
- Dark Pulse
- Fire Blast
- Earth Power / Roost

Hydreigon nukes everything that wants to wall Metagross, simple as that, even Hippowdon has a minimal chance to get OHKOd after Rocks or Spikes(If used on a spikes stacking team), they also have good type synergy, Metagross deals with Pesky fairies and Ice coverage while Hydra switches into Ghost, Dark, Fire and Ground coverage, Fire Blast is picked over Flash Cannon because M-Metagross smashes fairies with its stab Meteor Mash.

Keldeo

Keldeo @ Choice Specs
Ability: Justified
EVs: 252 SpA/ 4 SpD/ 252 Spe
Timid Nature
-Scald
-Hydro Pump
-Secret Sword
-Icy Wind

Let's list stuff that Keldeo beats that Mega Metagross struggles against/generally dislikes:
  • Mega Sableye
  • Garchomp
  • Landorus-T
  • Hippowdon
  • Skarmory
  • Excadrill
  • Mega Scizor
  • Bisharp
  • Weavile
  • Ferrothorn
  • Heatran
*Obviously Hammer arm beats some of these, but different sets can outspeed Mega Meta or avoid the OHKO. The speed drop is also an issue.*

Keldeo switches in on nearly all of them with ease, and 1- or 2HKOs them all. In return, Mega Meta checks the Latis with Pursuit, breaks Mega Venu and Amoonguss, and demolishes Clefable.

Landorus-Therian @ Leftovers
Ability: Intimidate
EVs: 56 HP / 220 Atk / 232 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge
- Rock Polish
- Swords Dance

SD Lando-T synergizes extremely well with Mega Metagross, weakening bulky ground types such as Hippowdon for Mega Metagross. Mega Metagross also tends to lure in things like Lando-T, which SD Lando-T can set up on.

(awesome sprite by the way)

Dragonite @ Leftovers / Lum Berry
Ability: Multiscale
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Dragon Claw
- Fire Punch
- Roost / Earthquake / Extreme Speed

In order to steer away from the most commonly used cores with Water and Electric types, I'm going to nominate Dragonite.

Defensively, they share a great synergy, providing resistances to 15 out of the 18 attacking types (the others being Electric, Dark and Ghost), with only one overlap being Grass. This means they can easily get in the field, and the fact that these resistances are well spread between the two means they can often create opportunities for the other to come in as well, which brings us the offensive aspect of the synergy.

Metagross-Mega is excelent in paving the way for a potential Dragonite sweep, luring and weakening Pokémon such as Heatran, Landorus-T and Rotom-W, and being one of the most reliable Fairy Pokémon killers in the game. Also, Metagross-Mega can often bait Ground-type moves (many times locked) which Dragonite can gladly set up on.

If the goal is instead to achieve a Metagross-Mega sweep, Dragonite can severely dent or outwright muder pokémon such as Skarmory, Scizor and bulky Water or Ground-types, including the aforementioned Landorus-T and Rotom-W.

Overall, they provide two win-cons for the team, all the while mutually helping each other and keeping offensive momentum on the core user's side.

The best partner, Im reserving magnezone

Magnezone @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Magnet Pull
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 30 SpA / 30 Spe
- Volt Switch
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Thunderbolt
- Flash Cannon

Magnezone + metagross form a great dual trapping core. Metagross absolutely despise opposing steel types like mega scizor, ferrothorn and skarmory so Magnezone trap every single one mega metagross cant beat by itself. Magnezone also helps against certain water types that give metagross problems like gyarados and together these 2 can overwhelm their checks through strong steel STAB moves. Great partner overall.

Lum SD+SR Chomp

Garchomp @ Lum Berry
Ability: Rough Skin
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Swords Dance
- Dragon Claw / Outrage
- Earthquake
- Stealth Rock

Offensive Chomp with SD can break opposing core consisting of Lando-T, Hippo Rotom-W or other bulky mons. Lum allows some reckless plays againt status users for example vs MegaSab to off damage so that Metagross can clean later. Rocks support is always handy

Metagross also breaks mons that can be troublesome for Chomp like Lati Twins and Clefabale.

Reserving Talonflame. How has this not been done yet?

Beneath The Sun (Talonflame) @ Leftovers
Ability: Gale Wings
EVs: 248 HP / 252 SpD / 8 Spe
Careful Nature
- Brave Bird
- Roost
- Bulk Up / Taunt
- Will-O-Wisp

Specially Defensive Talonflame & Mega Metagross make fine partners for each other. Talonflame can wear down & cripple bulky Ground types such as Hippowdon, Garchomp, Landorus-T, and Gliscor with a combination of Will-O-Wisp & Taunt if it chooses to pack it while also being able to shut down Skarmory & cripple Mega Scizor with a well timed Taunt or Will-O-Wisp, respectively. In return, Mega Metagross crushes all Rock types with a STAB Meteor Mash, & can also beat Heatran with Hammer Arm, allowing Talonflame to easily sweep late game with Bulk Up.

Infernape @ Life Orb
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 100 Atk / 156 SpA / 252 Spe
Naive Nature
- Close Combat
- Fire Blast
- Mach Punch
- Hidden Power Ice/Grass Knot

Mega Metagross is plagued by steel types that can take a hammer arm (scizor, jirachi, skarmory, ferrothorn b/c iron barbs+leech seed is annoying, etc.), dark types that can KO it with their STAB moves (scarf ttar, bisharp, mandibuzz foul play), and bulky grass types (celebi, tangrowth, etc.), so Infernape is an excellent partner to the core as it can take out all three of these threats solely with its STAB moves. Close Combat and fire blast are self-explanatory STAB moves that can devastate an opposing team with their pure power, mach punch takes out annoying dark types without having to suffer prior damage, and hp ice lures tankchomp which troubles this mmeta set as it isn't running ice punch. Additionally, metagross's ability to pursuit trap the lati twins is really helpful for infernape as the latis are pretty much the bane of this monkey's existence. Additionally, grass knot can be used on infernape to lure hippowdon and hurt it really badly since meta isn't running gk.

This week was one of the hardest to pick only 3 winners. Thank you everyone for making a nomination, there was a ton of good ones *-*

The Winners:

JTD783's Keldeo

bludz's Thundurus-I

Random Passerby's Manaphy
----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Week 34 - Spikes Ferrothorn

Ferrothorn @ Leftovers
Ability: Iron Barbs
EVs: 252 HP / 88 Def / 168 SpD
Relaxed Nature
IVs: 0 Spe
- Gyro Ball
- Power Whip
- Leech Seed
- Spikes

Choice Scarf Keldeo

Keldeo @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Justified
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Secret Sword
- Scald
- Hydro Pump
- Hidden Power [Electric]

Ferrothorn has a lot of trouble with fires (duh) like Charizards X and Y, and the strong fighting types in ou like Mega Medicham and Mega Lopunny. It also doesn't want to get trapped by Magnezone, so keeping that out is greatly appreciated. It also struggles with SD Mega Scizor that want to SD up in its face. Scarf Keldeo solves many of these problems, scaring out Mag, revenging Zard x and Mega Lop, and doing a big chunk to Zard Y and Medicham. It can also take advantage of the spikes that Ferrothorn sets, utilitzing them to clean up later in the game.

Haven't used Ferro for a very long time but ....

Hippowdon @ Leftovers
Ability: Sand Stream
EVs: 252 HP / 144 Def / 112 SpD
Impish Nature
- Earthquake
- Stealth Rock
- Slack Off
- Stone Edge

Hippowdon is able to come in on Pokemon such as Mega Charizard-X, Talonflame, Heatran and Mega Charizard-Y which scares away Ferrothorn. It is also able to check Bisharp which sets up freely on Ferrothorn. Hippowdon also sets up Stealth Rock, allowing Ferrothorn to run Spikes. In return, Ferrothorn helps Hippowdon against Water-types such as Manaphy (non-HP Fire) and Starmie which it dislikes. This core is very weak to Mega Scizor, Will-O-Wisp Talonflame and Power-up Punch Mega Lopunny, however.

Jellicent (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 248 HP / 172 SpD / 88 Spe
Calm Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Scald
- Recover
- Will-O-Wisp
- Toxic / Shadow Ball

Jellicent acts as a spinblocker while also leading into an FWG core. Namely, Jellicent is able to block spins from Starmie (i.e. the only good spinner) while providing utility and longevity with its high special bulk and access to Wisp, Recover and STAB Scald. The given EVs outpace adamant 164 Azumarill, allowing you to Wisp it before it can Play Rough.

Last edited:

Azumarill @ Choice Band
Ability: Huge Power
EVs: 172 HP / 252 Atk / 84 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Play Rough
- Waterfall
- Aqua Jet
- Superpower

Azumarill makes a great partner for Ferrothorn, walling and taking out the troublesome fire and fighting types such as CharX and Keldeo with its powerful STABs, while in return Ferrothorn resists/is immune to poison, grass and electric for Azu, and can wear down the opposing team with leech seed and spikes to bring them into aqua jet range and clean up.

Infernal

Banned deucer.

Altaria @ Altarianite
Ability: Pixilate
EVs: 248 HP / 16 Atk / 4 SpD / 240 Spe
Adamant Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Roost
- Return
- Heal Bell

Charizard-Y and Charizard-X are big threats to Ferrothorn. To add, Ferrothorn is scared of powerful fighting attacks from Pokemon like Specs Keldeo. Altaria checks all of these threats decently thanks to its typing and good bulk, making it a good partner. Moreover, Ferrothorn's lifespan is always ruined by burns from Scald and Will-O-Wisp. Heal Bell support helps with the issue, and is a big bonus provided by Mega Altaria. DD makes this mega a great win condition, and entry hazards from Ferrothorn are appreciated by Mega Altaria to weaken several threats and make sweeping an easier process.

Garchomp @ Rocky Helmet
Ability: Rough Skin
EVs: 240 HP/ 176 Def/ 92 Spe
Impish Nature
- Stealth Rocks
- Earthquake
- Dragon Tail
- Fire Blast

Defensive Garchomp has excellent defensive synergy with Ferrothorn allowing the pair to check many threats. Garchomp also carries stealth rocks to form a hazard stacking core with Ferrothorn to rack up passive damage on the opponent's team. Furthermore, Garchomp's rocky helmet and rough skin combined with Ferrothorn's iron barbs can accumulate damage very quickly on physical attackers, especially if you choose to run rocky helmet on Ferrothorn instead of leftovers.

Manaphy @ Leftovers
Ability: Hydration
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Tail Glow
- Rain Dance
- Scald
- Psychic

Ferrothorn's primarily weak to fire types, which Manaphy can check as a water type. Rain Dance allows it to become a status absorber, weakens fire type moves so Ferrothorn can set up Spikes more reliably, and can change the weather against Mega Charizard Y or sand offense. In return, Ferrothorn checks most electric types pretty well and its Spikes aid Manaphy in its stallbreaking.

Heatran @ Air Balloon
Ability: Flash Fire
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Fire Blast
- Earth Power
- Hidden Power Ice/Stone Edge/Taunt
- Stealth Rock

Ferrothorn and heatran make excellent partners together, forming a potent hazard stacking core that can work very well on offense, especially considering that sab is banned for the next 15 hours approximately, and that ladder generally was seeing a decrease in stall before the suspect test anyways, bar like high ladder where everyone and their mom spammed ABR stall. Heatran can absorb fire moves for ferrothorn and can knock out opposing fire types that threaten ferrothorn. Rocks are standard and a must need on practically every team, Fire Blast is standard fire STAB, and the coverage move is generally team dependant. HP Ice is preferred to lure and kill fire blast chomp and offensive EPlate landot, both of whom threaten ferro a lot, especially since they don't run contact moves, however if you are weak to zardy or talonflame, then stone edge is more than good enough for your needs. Taunt can also be used in the last slot if need be and you're that weak to cm clef. If you're running hp ice or taunt, just use a timid nature regardless of moveset because stone edge gets pretty much the KOs you need regardless of if you are timid or hasty nature lol.

Slowbro @ Leftovers
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpA
Bold Nature
- Thunder Wave / Toxik / Calm Mind
- Scald
- Slack Off
- Psychic / Psyshock / Flamethrower

Like Hippowdon, Slowbro is able come in and wall huge threats such as Charx, Talonflamme, Medicham, Heatran, Lucario, SDGliscor or even specs Keldeo. In return, Ferrothorn is a direct switch against Raikou, Serperior (if no HP Fire), Celebi etc... But the core is extremely weak to MManetric, SD Scizor (not really since you can also put Flamethrower on Slowbro), Tornadus-T and Zapdos (Heatwave...). Maybe add Hippowdon or BandTyranitar to this core ?
